IMPRQVEMENT EN BED-BTTQtdS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,!45, dated August 20, B7 i Specification of an Improved Bed-Bottom, invented by JABEZ REYNOLDS, Jr., of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio.
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
This is an improvement in that class of bedbottoms in which a congeries of wooden slats are supported on two series of duplex helicoidal springs attached to the side rails; and my improvement consists in a novel and secure mode of fastening such springs to their said supporting-rails.
General Description.
Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of the supporting-rail with one of my springs in position and the contiguous portions of two adjoining springs, one of the scutcheons being detached Fig. 2 is a side elevation, with the rail in section.
A represents a portion of a supporting-rail, forming one of the four sides of the open outer frame-work of my bed-bottom. B are grooves extending vertically upward from perforations O in the outer side of the rail, the said grooves and perforations being such as to receive the vertical portions D and the bent extremities E of my springs when driven into the rail, leaviug the vertical portions of saidextremities flush with the rear surface of the rail, so as, for the sides of the vertical grooves B, to effectually support the springs against lateral disturbance. In order to hold the said extremities permanently in the rail there is applied to each couple of adjacent extremities a metallic cap or scutcheon, F, having a central orifice,
f, which receives the wood screw G, by which said scutchcon is secured to the rail; and said scuteheons are further useful in making a smooth and neat finish to the rail at this part and excludingdust and vermin.
It will be seen that the vertical portions D of the extremities, and also the bent terminal portions E, being completely embedded in the rail, said portions rest wholly upon, and are supported by, the substance of the said rail as on a firm base--or, in other words, that a downward stress of the said vertical portions is met and sustained by the substance of the rail, which would not be the case were said vertical portions outside of the rail.
Claim.
I claim as new and of my invention- The described arrangement of grooved and perforated supporting rail or frame A, with grooves B and inclined sockets G, the bent extremities D E of my helicoidal springs, and scutcheon F f secured to the rail, as shown, by wood screw G, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
JABEZ REYNOLDS, JR.
