Description

E. A. KELSEY.
lmpr'ovement in Device for Capping Cartridges.
No.` 130,723. y Parenteiiiugfzo, i872.
EEroE.
EPHRAIM A. KELSEY, CF WEST MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT,
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR CAPPING CARTRIDGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,723, dated August 20, 1672.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM A. KELsEY, of West Meriden, in the county of N ew Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Device for Capping Cartridges 5 and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part ot' this specification, and represents in- Figure 1 a side view, and in Fig. 2 a longitudinal section as in operation. j
This invention relates to a device for priming metallic cartridges-that is to say, that class of cartridges in which the primer is introduced upon the outside of the rear end of the shell, substantially such as that known as the Berdan77 primer, this device being clesigned to accompany fire-arms constructed for the use of that class of cartridges-that is to say, sporting-arms.
A is the base, from which rises a post, B, and to which, at a, a lever, C, is pivoted. On the base a projection, d, is formed, corresponding in size and form to the interior of the mouth of the shell, so that a shell, D, may be set thereon, as seen in Fig. 2, insuring the same required position for successive shells to be primed. On the under side of the lever C a small projection, f, is formed, and in line cenn l trally over the projection d on the base, so that the projection f will with accuracy strike the center of the head of the shell.
For use the lever C is thrown back, as de= noted by broken lines, Fig. 1, the shell set in position with the primer set thereon; then the lever is brought down onto the head, the projection f striking the primer and forcing it to its seat, as seen in Fig. 2.
For convenience, and to prevent the mis` placement ofthe shell, an inclined projection, n, is formed upon the under side of the lever C, so that should the shell be slightly out of line this incline will bring it to the proper central position.
I claim- As an articie of manufacture, the herein-described device for capping cartridges, consisting of the base A on which is formed the projection d and from which rises the post B, constructed with a lever, C, pivoted to the said post, and constructed wit-h the projection j', with or wit-hout a projection, n., substantially as specified.
