Description

G. V. McGRAW.
Cartridge Capping and Uncapping Devices. No. 140,718. PatentedJuly8J873 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE V. MOGRAW, OF MANKATO, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES PARKER, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRIDGE CAPPING AND UNCAPPING DEVICES.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 140,718, dated July 8, 1873; application filed June 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE V. MOGRAW, of Mankato, in the county of Blue Earth and State of Minnesota, have invented a new Improvement in Cartridge-(lapping Device; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the lettersof reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a side view; and in Fig. 2, a vertical central section.
This invention relates to an improvement in the primer for cartridges, for which Letters Patent were granted to E. A. Kelsey, bearing date August 20, 1872, and numbered 130,723, but is applicable to other priming devices, the object being to combine with the cartridgeprimer the means for removing the primer after discharge, or before, if necessary; and the invention consists in combining with the lever and base forming the priming device a post of the diameter to lit the interior of the shell, and with a spindle at the top, so that when the shell is placed onto the post the said spindle will enter the perforation in the shell and strike the primer, and when the shell is driven further onto the post the spindle will force the primer from its seat.
A is the base, from which a post, B, rises, and to this post a lever, C, is hinged, as at a. On the base a form, D, is made to govern the position of the shell to be primed, and centrally over this form a downward projection, d, is formed upon the lever to press the primer into its seat in the shell, as seen in Fig. 1, and substantially as shown in the Kelsey patent before referred to. Forward, or at a convenient point upon the base A, or beneath the lever, I arrange a post, E, a portion or the whole of which is made to fit the interior of the shell. In the upper end of this post a spindle, b, is centrally placed, of such a diameter as to pass freely through the perforation in the head of the shell. Above this spindle the lever has a chamber, f, formed, as seen in Fig. 2, so that when a shell having a primer attached (exploded or not) is placed upon the post the primer will rest upon the upper end of the spindle before the shell shall have reached the base; then the lever is brought down onto the head of the shell and forced down the primer, prei'ented from going down by the spindle, will be removed from its seat into the chamber in the lever, from which it will drop when the lever is removed, leaving the shell ready for a new primer.
I claim as my invention- In combination with a priming device for cartridge-shells, consisting of the base A and lever 0 provided with suitable means for supporting the shell to be primed, the post E having the spindle d in its head, and the lever constructed with a cavity, f, over the said spindle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Gr. V. MGGRAW.
