IMPROVEMENT IN BRACKETS FOR HANGING LOOKING-GLASSES, &c.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,563, dated August 20, 1872.

SPECIFICATION.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, F. O. BROGK, of Oriskany Falls, county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Brackets or Backs for Hanging Looking-Glasses, Picture-Frames, or other Parlor Ornaments; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my device, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in the manner of hanging ornaments to the walls of dwellings, to supersede the use of cords. It consists of a metallic clutch, which may be secured to the sides of the frame of the ornament and also to the wall, to afford a ready and convenient support to mirrors or fancy parlor ornaments incased in frames.

Description of Drawing.

Figure 1 is a side view of device; Fig. 2, a plan of same; Fig. 3, a plan of same.

Similar letters of reference refer to corresponding parts in all figures.

A is the picture-frame which incases the picture or ornament which it surrounds. B B are metallic pieces forming arms, secured together at the clasp D. The clasp D is riveted to or forms a part of the back plate E which leans against the wall, when supported by one or more pins driven into it. The arms B B have pivotsor journals 0 (3, formed in such a manner with reference to the edge of the frame as to be able to take hold of it and secure it, when the arms forming the swings are adjusted to suit the size of the frame. Washers a a may be used, if necessary, to prevent wear on the edge of the frame. The clasp I), which atcaches to the wall-plate E, has a slot, piercing it horizontally, of a width and depth sufficient to receive freely the ends of the arms B B, both at the same time. A thumb-screw, F, enters the clasp, either from above or below, and when secured up against the swing-arms, they are secured to their proper adjustment. The arms B B are bent, as seen in drawing, so as to have the pivot ends enter the frame on opposite sides in a horizontal plane, so as to have the axis of the frame in a horizontal line. The pivots G 0 may enter the edge of the frame either above or below the center of gravity, so that the picture or mirror may be adjusted suitably to the light or the relative position of the observer. The arms forming the swing may be of truncated form, as seen in drawing, or curved, as tasteand convenience may suggest. The wall-plate has a slot, of a key-hole shape, so that it'may hang on any ordinary nail, which would preclude the necessity of drawing the nails from the wall, when moving a picture from one place to another.

What I claim as new, and my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The swing, composed of the arms B B and pivots O G, in combination with clasp D, attached to the wall-plate E, substantially as and for the purpose described and set forth.
