To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, M'ABEL Goo-ER, citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary and Protective Caps, whereof the following is a specification.

This invention relates to means for protecting mens, womens and childrens hair and scalp while trying on hats. There are a great numberof people whose heads are affected with dandrufl', sores, itching scalp and kindred complaints, and at the present time there is absolutely no way of protect ing ones hair and scalp from such disease while trying on hats under the present con- When a woman tries on a hat now she runs the risk of catching all sorts of scalp diseases, as hundreds of women may have tried on the same hat ahead of, her.

My sanitary cap acts as a perfect protection to the hair and scalp by preventing :the head from coming in contact with the nat The cap also acts as a protection to the. hats by preventing them getting soiledwhile being tried on.

Hence the invention performs a double function, namely, protecting the wearer or tryer-on and also the hat, and is therefore a sanitary article of great utility, both by itself and in combinatlon with a hat.

In carrying out the invention I cut a disk of paper, usually circular in form, or approximately so, crimp or knife-Plait its edges, so that it may be fitted over the head and hair of a lady or into the crown of a ladys hat.

Hence ll call the device a try-on cap and its shape conforms closely to the'shape of the head.

The crimp, or knife-plaits annular edge permits fitting any head by plaits opening and closing in and lying flat against the head as hat is put on.

This disk may be parafined and perfumed to make it moisture-proof and at tractive. ll have found numerous essential oils satisfactory for this purpose. For example, the oil of geranium may be mixed with the paraffin and the parafin applied in the usual way of making paraflined paper.

The sanitary cap thus produced is dis carded, that is, thrown away after once be-v in used.

Figure 1 represents a ladys head, with a hat and my invention applied.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the outside of my sanitary cap.

Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the interior of the same.

In these figures:

3 is a hat which she is trying on, to determine its fit and becomingness, or any other of the many questions which arise in one sheet of drawthe invention and a ladys mind on such an occasion 4 is the sanitary and protective cap which is placed upon the ladys head before the "hat, 3, is put thereon, thereby protecting the hair and head of wearer frpm coming in contact with the hat, thereby preventing contagion of scalp disease and any disagreeable features arising from previous tryings-on.

The cap, 4, is composed of a paper disk which comprises the solid central portion,

The central portion is shown as curved so that it can adapt itself substantially to the configuration of the coiflure of the user, and the annular portion 6 may be termed an extended skirt since it has for its function to bend out over the knot of .hair of the user or to extend down over the side hair even though the side hair is pufied. It may be used plain without further treatment or it may be parafined and perfumed, as suggested hereinabove.

Having thus described my invention and an embodiment of it, in the full, clear and exact terms required by law, and knowing that it comprises novel, useful and valuable improvements in the art to which it pertains, I here state that I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction and arrangement of the several parts, as herein set forth, as the same may be. variously modified by askilled mechanic without departing from the spirit of the invention.
