Description
M.- BASTA;
HAMMER. APPLICATION EILED MAR. 27. 19H.
Patented May 27, 1919.
I Wifnemrm:
' CLCL 4 is A Rom MILE BASTA, OF GARY, INDIANA.
HAMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2'7, 1919.-
Application filed March 27, 1917. Serial No. 157,617.
' city of Gary, county of Lake, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
invention relates to improvements in hammers and has for its object the production of a tool of this character which will be of durable and economical construction and highly eflicient in use. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a partially sectional side elevation of a hammer embodying the invention, and 4 Fig. 2 1s a section taken on line of Fi 1. The preferred form. of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a head 3 formed of metal and in which is provided an opening 4 extending entirely there through.
To the head 3 is attached an elongated handle 5 of cast metal, aluminum being preferably used. In the connection of the parts 3 and 5, the handle is cast or poured right into the opening 4. In order to efi'ect an absolutely rigid connection between said parts, the opening 4 is of forwardly divergent form, the metal of handle 5, in being oured into said opening, of course flowing into the same form as said opening, thus resulting in an absolutely rigid connection between the parts.
Formed in the rearward end of handle 5 is an elongated longitudinally extending I recess 6 the outer end of which is closed'by a removable closure 7 which is threaded into the rearward end of the handle.
Said closure 7 is provided with an exteriorly positioned knurled head as seen so as to permit of readyrapplication or removal of the closure.
The recess 6 is adapted to accommodate counter-balance members 8 whereby the tool may be nicely balancedto suit the tastes of the user, it being clear that the balance of a tool, and particularly a hammer, varies greatly with difi'erent individuals- The counter-balance members 8 may be in the nature of center punches, dies and the like which are ordinarily used in connection with 80 a hammer, and where this is the case, the recess 6 in addition to serving the function of a receptacle for counter-balance members, serves also as a receptacle for tools frequently used in connection with a hammer.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to-be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is:
A tool of the class described comprising a head have a forwardly diverging opemng extending therethrough; and a metallic onepiece handle having its forward end cast into and completely filling! said opening, whereby said head and handle are securely locked together substantiallyas described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to thisspecification in the presence of two subscribing witnessm.
