WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HOLMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Williamson, in the county of Mingo and State of West Virginia, have invented anew and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this applicationis a wrench, adapted primarily but not exclusively forturning round objects, such as pipes, and one object ofthe invention is to providenovel means for operatingone jaw through the instrumentality of the handle of the wrench. 1
Another object of theinvention is to provide novel means for limiting the movement of the other jawwhich is slidably mounted.
It is within the province of thediselosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other obj ectsin view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in. the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, with in the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in section, a wrench con structed in accordance with the invention, parts appearing in elevation; Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross section-on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a perspective showing the pressure member; and Fig. 5 is a perspective depicting the main member of the wrench.
he wrench forming the subject matter of this application includes a main member 1 comprising a hollow head 2, a body 3 having a slot 4 in one edge and a reduced extension 5 terminating in an enlargement 6.
There is a slot 7 in the extension 5, the slot including a terminal enlargementS located in the part 6. Where the head 2 is connected to the body 3, undercut shoulders 9 are formed, and shoulders 10 exist at the place Where the body 3 and the extension 5 join.
The wrench includes a main jaw, having arms 12 straddling the body 3 and cooperating with the shoulders 9. At this point it may be observed that, since the shoulders 9 are undercut, the arms 12 of themain jaw Specification of Letters Patent.

The jaw 14 has an arm 16 extending into the hollow head 2, thejaw being supplied with arearwardlyrprojecting boss 17, and having a cam end 18.
*One'end of a lever. or handle 19 extends through the slot 4 of the body 3 and enters the hollow head 2, theleverbeingpivoted at 20 to the head. The lever 19 embodies a first finger 21 adapted to cooperatewith the b'oss17 of the auxiliary jaw 14, and a second finger22 adapted to coact with the cam end 18 ,of the auxiliary jaw, theboss 17 in substance, operating between the fingers 21 and 22.
The numeral 23 denotes, generally, apressure member having an opening 24 receiving the extension 5 of'the body 3, the construction being such that the pressure member may slidetowardand away from the arms 12 of themain jaw ,11. A notch 25 in the edge of the pressuremember'23 receives the lever 19. The pressure member 23 is supplied with oppositely disposed threaded recesses 26 communicating with the opening 24. A screw 27 is located in the slot 7 of the main member 1 and includes a head 28 disposed in the enlarged terminal portion 8 of the slot 7. The diameter of the head 28 is considerably greater than the thickness of the end portion 6 of the main member 1, so that the head 28 will be accessible readily for rotation, Fig. 2 being noted at this point, rotation, of course, being imparted to the screw 27 by way of the head 28. The screw 27 is of greater diameter than the thickness of the extension 5 of the member 1, so that the screw may have a threaded engagement with the recesses 26 in the pressure member 23. The rear edges of the arms 12 of the main jaw 11 are inclined with respect to the forward edges of the arms, as indicated at 50. In other words, the arms,12 of the main jaw taper from their free ends toward the head portion of the jaw, the forward edges of the pressure member 23 being inclined accordingly. r
In practical operation, the screw 27 may be rotated by means of the head 28, the pressure member 23 being retracted from the arms 12 of the main jaw 11, whereupon the main jaw may he slid, transversely of the wrench, toward and away from the auxiliary 1 to the dotted line position of that figure,
the second finger 22 of the lever, coaeting with the cam end 18 of the arm 16 of the auxiliary jaw 14, will swing the auxiliary jaw on its pivotal support 15 toward the main jaw 11 and cause the jaws to coact in gripping an object firmly. If the lever or handle 19 beswung from the dotted line position of Fig. l tothe solid line position shown in Fig. 1, then the first finger 21 on the lever coacting with the boss 17 on the arm 16.of the jaw 14, will retract the jaw 14 from the jaw 11.
Havingthus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A wrench comprising a main member; an'auxiliary jaw movably mounted on the mainmember; a main jaw slidable on the main member toward and away from the auxiliary jaw; a lever fulcrumed on the main sure block slidable on the main member and eoacting with the main jaw to hold the same 'in adjusted positions with respect to the auxiliary jaw; and adjustable means connecting the main; member and the pressure block to hold the pressure block in adjusted positions with respect to the main jaw.
2. A'wrench comprising a main member; an auxiliary jaw movably mounted onthe mainmember; a main jaw slidable on the main member toward and away from the auxiliary jaw; a lever fulerumed on the main member and interengaged with the auxiliary jaw to swing the auxiliary jaw toward and away from the main jaw; a-pressure block slidable on the main member and coacting with the main jaw to hold the same in adjusted positions with respect to the auxiliary jaw; and a screw held against rotation in the main member and threaded into the pressure block.
