Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Api'. 29, TQM).
i QMApplication filed March 29,1916. Serial No. 37,647.
1o all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HENRY J: STUART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Derby, inthe county of New Haven and State of Connecticut,`have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Button-Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to 4button-clasps', but more particularly to those which are provided with a bar or support for carrying the looped extremity of the button tab, and its object is to so construct a clasp of this character that thebutton tab may be mounted on its supporting` bar after its looped extremity has been formed.
I attain this and other objects of my invention in the device set forth in the following description and accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to corresponding parts.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a front view of my improved clasp, a part of the supporting webbing and button tab being broken away;
Fig. 2, a central vertical section taken on line -zv in Fig. l, and
Fig. 3, a perspective view of the button tab.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the clasp, )which is shown loosely mounted onthe looped extremity of the supporting strap A, consists of an attaching loop B and a button loop C and a button tab D which latter carries a button E. The attaching loop B is bent up out of a single piece of wire having its extremities terminating in its lower side forming the inwardly projecting pintles 2, 2 which latter have their adjacent ex tremities slightly separated for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. The button loop C, which is made of sheet metal, is provided with a tongue or strap 3 projecting from its upper side 4 which tongue is curled to form a sleeve or bearing for'the pintles,
2, 2. Just below the upper side 4 the loop is lprovided with a bridge 5. All of the parts of the button loop C, with the exception of the tongue which forms the bearing 3, have their face portions struck up or beaded to give the necessary body and strength to the loop and at the same time to enable the loop to present the skeletonJ like and ornamental appearance of a heavy metal or wire device. The device thus far described is one well-known in the trade and is' disclosed herein merely for the purpose of showing how my vinvent-ion is applied. The tab 'Dfhas its extremities (l, (l `attached to the under side ofthe base plate e of the button'E by a suitable adhesive substance thereby forming a loop which is carried by the bearing 3 and depends downwardly along the rear side of the button loop C in back of the bridge 5. Vhen the button loop C is blanked the upper side 4 together with the tongue which lforms the bearing 3 is slit midway and vertically to form the slot 6 which is restricted at its upper extremity but widened as it approaches its lower extremity. After the extremities d, d of the tab D have been fastened to the button base e so that the tab forms a loop one of the folds of this loop is passed upwardly from the rear through the opening 6 and thereby becomes suspended from and supported by the bearing 3. In this manner the tab is attached to the clasp after a supporting loop has been formed therein. The opening left between the adjacent extremities of the pintles 2, 2 registers with the slot 6 thereby leaving an unobstructed passage for the looped ex-l tremity of the tab. Since the upper extremity of the slot 6 is restricted, that is to a width about equal to the thickness of the tab, it prevents the fabric from passing back into the slot after the device has been assembled, and further the flaring entrance atthe lower end of the slot 6 being between rounded corners of the bead which forms the upper side 4 of the loop enables the tab to be readily inserted in the slot during the process of assembling. Heretofore it has been necessary to thread the tab around the upper side or other member of the button loop to which it has been attached before fastening the extremities of the fabric, which would be im'practicable in the present instance wherein the extremities are fastened to a button base in the manner above de scribed, since this operation must be performed before the tab is attached to the clasp. It is understood, however, that the supporting loop in the tab may be formed in any other well known manner since the broad feature of my invention resides in a construction wherein the closed supporting "loop in the tab can be passed through an opening in the supporting member of the clasp during the process of assembling the device.
While the device herein disclosed embodies the preferred forms of my invention, yet it is to be understood that the same is susceptible to such modification as may fairly come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having now described my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A button clasp comprising a strap attaching loop, a button loop and a pivotal connection between said loo-ps, the said pivotal connection being provided with an opening for the passage of a fold of a button tab into said attaching loop.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the 2. A button clasp comprising an attaching loop and a button loop, a sleeve carried by one of said loops and a cross bar carried by the other loop and journaled in said sleeve to form a hinge, the said hinge being provided With a transverse Vopening, for the passage of a fold of a button tab into said loop. y
3. In a button clasp having a button tab, an attaching loop With inwardly projecting pintles and a button loop provided with a sleeve in which said pintles are journaled to form a hinge, the said hinge being slit transversely for the passage of a fold of the button tab intothe attaching loop.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of February, 1916.
HENRY J. STUART.
