JOHN'F. MARTIN, 0F GEN'IRY, ARKANSAS.
CANDLE-HOLDER.
Application filed August 27, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. MARTIN a citizen of the United States, residing at Gentry, in the county of Benton and State of Arkansas, have invented new'and useful Improvements in Candle-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to candle holders, particularly to that type adapted for hand use, and hasfor its object the provision of a candle holder embodying a base having mounted thereon a candle support including a prong for engaging thebase of the candle and resilient arms grippin the candle at a point considerably above t e base whereby the candle will be held in a perfectly upright position and prevented from falling over, thereby eliminating the danger of fire caused by such falling over and preventing spilling of the melted grease upon carpets, furniture and clothing.
An important object is the provision of a candle holder of this character provided with a detachable auxiliary member adapted to be associated with the candle support proper whereby short ends orremnants of candles may be conveniently utilized and still maintained in an upright position.
A further object is the provision of a device of this character the base ofwhich is provided with means for holding a plurality of matches in a position convenient to the user and also for holding the stems of the burnt matches.
An additional object is the provision of a candle holder of this character the base of which is provided with a scratching member whereby the matches may be conveniently ignited without the necessity of striking them upon walls or other places.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which will besimple and inexpensive in manufacture, pleasing in appearance, efficient in use, durable in service and a general improvement of the art.
With the above and other objects and ad vantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 is a plan view of the candle holder;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29, 1919.
Serial No. 251,653.
Fig. 4 is a similar View showing the remnant pan in position; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of the remnant pan detached.
Fig. 6 is a perspective detail view of at means for securing the candle holder to the plate.
Referringmore particularly to the drawing the numeral 5 designates the base of my device which is formed preferably as a fiat plate circular in form or of any desired an gular' configuration. Upon its underside, the base is preferably provided with a plurality of supporting feet 6 and upon its upper side adjacent one edge is provided with a handle 7 whereby it may be conveniently carried.
Extending upwardly at the center of the base 5 is a standard 8 which carries at its upper end a plate 9 provided with downwardly extending side flanges 10.
The candle holding portion of my device is formed preferably from a single sheet of resilient material which is bent intermediate its ends to provide downwardly extending portions 11 defining therebetween a base portion -12 having laterally extending lugs 13. The plate '9 has its upper surface recessed as shown for conforming engagement of the base portion 12 and lugs 13 of the candle holder. The lugs 13 I are disposed within cutaway portions 14: in the plate 9 at the flanges 10. The candle holder further comprises two arms 15 which extend from the base portion 12 and which are curved upwardly and toward each other and are provided at their meeting ends with arcuate jaws 16 which may be preferably provided with serrations 17 for more effectively gripping the candle to be held.
The base portion 12 of the candle holding member is held in secured relation upon the plate 9 by a plate 18 provided at on end with an upwardly extending finger engaging flange 19 and having its side edges provided with flanges 20 slidably engageable upon the flanges 10 of the plate 9. 'When the plate 18 is properly disposed upon the plate 9 it will confine the base 12 of the candle holding member in position upon the plate 9. At its center, the plate 18 carries an upstanding prong or tine 21 adapted for penetrating engagement with the butt end of a candle. A candle to be held by my device has its butt end engaged upon the tine 21 and has its intermediate portion disposed between and gripped by the jaws 16. On account of these jaws, the candle will consequently be held in an upright position and prevented from fallmg over.
In order to provide means whereby the short ends or remnants of candles may be utilized, I provide an auxiliary )late 21' which is provided at its sides with flanges 22 engageable upon the flanges 20 of the plate 18 and provided at one end with an upwardly extending finger engaging flange 23. A bracket 24: is carried by the plate 21 and is offset therefrom as clearly shown and carries upon its upper surface a cup 25 within which the short end or remnant of a can dle may be placed. When it is desired to use a short end of a candle, it is merely necessary to engage the plate 21 upon the top of the plate 18 by engaging the flanges 22 upon the flanges 20 and sliding the plate 21 along the plate 18 until the cup 25 is disposed immediately above the tine or prong 21. If desired, instead of engaging the plate 21 upon the plate 18, the plate 18 may be removed and the candle holding member removed after which the plate 18 may be reengaged upon the plate 9 and the plate 21 disposed upon the plate 18. This latter alternative arrangement would eliminate the disadvantage of having the flame from a short end of a candle play upon the jaws 16.
In order to provide means whereby used and unused matches may be held conveniently upon the plate 9, I provide a pair of wire members 26 and 27 which are formed as shown. The member 26 is adapted for the insertion of unused matches and will hold the matches in convenient position so that they may be readily grasped by the operator when desired. After the matches have been struck and ignited, they may be inserted within the member 27 and held firmly therein.
Furthermore in order to still more greatly increase the convenience of the device, I provide a scratching member 28 which may be formed of any desired construction and material and which is suitably connected with one of the members 26 or 27 as shown at 29.
In order that the device may be so constructed that the unused matches will be protected from tampering by children or be protected from injury by the weather, I may, if desired, provide a hinged cover for covering the member 26 within which the unused matches are disposed.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawing it will be apparent that I have thus provided a very simple and eflicient device which will hold a candle firmly so that all danger of its falling over will be prevented and which is so constructed as to enable short ends or remnants of candles to be utilized instead of being thrown away as is the common practice. Furthermore, it
will be observed that the device is very convenient as it provides in one body not only means for holding a candle but also means for holding used and unused matches and in addition a member upon which the matches may be struck.
It will of course be readily understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, and construction of arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subj oined claims, and it will be manifest that I may provide other means for securing the candle holding member upon the plate 9 and that the entire device may be made as ornamental or artistic as desired.
Having thus described my invention I claim 1. A device of the character described comprising a base, a standard rising therefrom, a plate mounted on said standard and provided with side flanges extending downwardly, a candle holding member mounted on said plate and including resilient arms curved to extend toward each other and terminatin in clamping jaws, and a clamping plate slldably engaged upon said flanges and disposed over the base of the candle holding member.
2. A device of the character described comprising a base, a standard rising therefrom, a plate carried by said standard, and having side flanges, said plate having its upper surface recessed, a candle holding member formed from a strip of resilient material and including an intermediate base portion disposed wlthin the recess in said plate, and further including resilient curved arms extending toward each other and terminating in clamping jaws spaced above said plate, and a holding plate slidalole upon said first named plate and provided with side flanges engageable beneath said first named flanges.
3. A device of the character described comprising a base, a standard rising therefrom, a plate carried by said standard and having side flanges, said plate having its upper surface recessed, a candle holding member formed from a strip of resilient material and including an intermediate base portion disposed within the recess in said plate, and further including resilient curved arms extending toward each other and terminating in clamping jaws spaced above said plate, and a holding plate slidable upon said first named plate and provided with side flanges engageable beneath said first named flanges, and an auxiliary plate disposed upon said last named plate and slidably engageable thereon, and a cup carried by said last named plate.
4. A device of the character described comprising a base, a standard rising therefrom, a plate mounted on the upper end of said standard and provided with depending side flanges and having its upper surface recessed, a candle holding member mounted on said plate and having its intermediate portion bent to provide depending portions, said depending portions defining therebetween a base portion disposed wlthin said recess, said candle holding memfloer further including resilient arms curved to extend toward each other and terminating in clamping jaws, and a plate detachably engageable upon said first named plate and provided with depending flanges engagi with said first named flanges, said last nam d plate confining the base of said candle holding member within said recess.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. i
JOHN F. MARTIN.
