Be it known that I, BARTHOLOMEW R. Doonr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a cer tain new and useful Improvement in Candles for Use in Church Services, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawm s.

Tn certain church services and ceremonies there is required the use of two lighted candles crossing each other and it is required that in the ceremony the crossed candles shall be brought into contact with the throat. Heretofore the candles used for that purpose have been straight candles of the common form, two candles being employed, and it has been customary to hold them in the hand in a crossed position against the throat, sometimes tying the candles together to retain them in crossed position and holding them inclined to the horizontal. This form of construction has been found inconvenient, both on account of the difliculty in handling them and also because a candle held in this position is more likely to drip than if the lighted portion is held in a vertical position, and yet two ordinary straight candles cannot be held in a vertical position across the throat in the manner required in the ceremony.

The object of the present invention is to provide a candle of such form that it is adapted to be crossed with another candle in such manner that the crossed portions may lie in a horizontal plane and embrace the throat in the proper manner while the portions which are to be lighted stand in a vertical position.

The present application is a division of an application filed by me July 7, 1910, Serial No. 570,751, in which there is described and claimed a holder for use with the candles which are the subject of the present application.

The invention will be fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features are pointed out and clearly defined in the claims at the close of the specification.

In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pair of candles constructed in accordance with the invention and combined together without a holder. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the two candles detached from each other. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the candles in combination with the holder such as is shown in said original application for the purpose of illustrating the manner in which the candles are used with the holder.

Referring to the drawings,each candle A, B, is made rightangled with a horizontal portion 9 and a vertical portion 10. In order that the two candles may cross each other on the level, they are made with interlocking recesses or diagonally transverse grooves so that they may be maintained in a crossed position at the proper angle and maintained with proper relation to each other. For this purpose one of the candles, as A, is formed with a mortise 11 on the under side and the other candle, B, is formed with a mortise 12 on the upper side, the mortise of one being adapted to fit into the mortise of the other so as to make a neat joint in crossing. The mortises extend diagonally across the candle according to the angle at which the candles are to cross each other. It is obvious that the particular form of mortise to enable the candles to cross each other and retain them in proper relation to each other may be varied. While the exact ratio of the vertical portion of the candle to the horizontal portion is immaterial except for adapting it to the purpose for which it is intended, preferably the vertical portion will ordinarily be shorter than the horizontal portion.

The vertical portions of the candles are provided with wicks 13 which are lighted during the ceremony. When the candles are used in the ceremony, they are crossed in the manner shown in Fig. 1 and are held so that the rearward extensions of the horizontal portions will embrace the throat in the angle 14:, the vertical portions 10, 10, being in front.

In order to conveniently hold the two candles during the ceremony, preferably a suitable holder is provided, one form of such holder being shown in Fig. 4.- in combination with the candles. The form of holder thus shown is the same as that in the original application of which this is a division, the said holder being made triangular with two diverging horizontal sides provided with holding clips 5 to engage the horizontal portions of the candles and having two upright portions provided with clips 8 to engage the vertical portions of the candles. It is provided with a handle 4 for convenience in handling the holder.

W hat I claim is:

1. The combination of two L-shaped candles having one branch of each candle crossing one leg of the other candle at an angle and inortised at their crossing points whereby the two candles are fitted together in such position that the other two legs of the candles will extend vertically upward substantially parallel with each other when the two crossed legs are held in horizontal position.

2. The combination of two L-shaped candles having the base leg of one candle cross ing the base leg of the other candle, the two crossed legs being formed with interengaging slots whereby the base portions are retained in their angular relation to each other and the other two legs are retained in substantially parallel relation to each other.
