DAVID MUNRO, OF SAN PATENT OFFICE.
rnancrseo. camronnra CHRISTMAS IREE HOLDER.
Application filed April 525, 132
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID MUNno, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Christmas-Tree Holders, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to improvements in stands or holders and has particular reference to a device of simple construction for holding a Christmas tree or the like in an upright position.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described which can be readily and conveniently adjusted to fit various diameters of trees and to further provide novel gripping means for retaining the tree in the desired position.
Another object is to produce a device which is economical to manufacture, strong, durable and highly efficient in use. d
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description. 7
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the holder,
Figure 2 is an edge View of the same,
Figure 3 is an enlarged plan view disclosing to advantage the means for retaining the tree in an upright position, and I Figure 4 is a detail view disclosing the manner in which one clamping bar is secured to the cross member.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the nlnneral 5 designates two cross bars adapted to lie in parallelism and provided with recesses 6 for receiving therein under-cut recesses 7 of two cross members 8. The respective cross bars and members, when assembled, form the base of the device which are of sufiicient length to support an ordinary size tree.
It will be observed that by the disposition of the bars and members that there is afforded a broad and uniform lateral floor Serial No. 709,007.
support for a tree trunk as herein designated by the reference character A.
The numeral 9 designates a screw bolt adapted-to penetrate one of the bars 5 and one of the members 8 at their points of juncture as disclosed to advantage in Figure 3. This bolt is'provided with a point 11 and carries thereon a washer 12 which, upon manual actuation of the screw bolt, contact the outer periphery of the treeand serve to retain the same in the holder.
For the purpose of re-enforcing the holder and adding an additional support for the tree, I have provided an L-shaped member 13 which is positioned on the base, at a point substantially opposite the point of penetration of the screw bolt 9. I propose to secure to the upper surface of this member 13 a metal plate 14 of similar configuration, except that the metal plate is provided with inner marginal teeth 15 which contact a portion ofthe periphery of the tree and cooperate with the screw bolt to form a positive gripping means for holding the tree in an upright position.
In the use of the holder on trees of a smaller diameter the metal plate can be eliminated. The fastening elements 16 indicate how the plate may be readily detached from the L-shaped member 13. The element 17 is secured to a portion of one of the bars 5 and a portion of one of the members 8 and positioned on the side opposite to the point of entrance of the screw bolt and serves as a combined guide for the bolt and means for strengthening the said bar and member at the point where any weakness might occur due to the opening formed therein'for the penetrating of the screw bolt. This element is internally threaded as at 18.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be found that I have perfected a simple device which can be easily operated and one which will readily accomplish the objects set forth.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A holder for trees comprising interlocking supporting members, a screw bolt penetrating certain of the members at one of their points of juncture and adapted to engage a portion of the periphery of the'tree,
an L-shaped reenforcing member carriedby' 10 the supporting members, and a serrated element carried by said L-shaped member for engaging the tree substantially opposite from the point of contact of the screw bolt.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
DAVID MUNRO.
