To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Pair-n10]; M. SUANLAN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New Yorln have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air- Pumps, of which the following is a specifica tion, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to air pumps and particularly to devices of this class designed for use indnfiating pneumatic tires; and the object thereof is to provide an air pump which is simple in construction, effective in operation and which may be more conveniently and easily operated than other devices of this class, and with the exertion of a minimum of elfort or power; a further object being to provide an improved air pump which may, in addition to being operated for the purpose specified, be also used for the purpose of pumping or compressing air in most of the relations or for most of the purposes for which such devices are usually employed: a still further object being to provide a portable pump which involves foldably connected parts and is operated by a lever and the separate parts of which may be compactly folded together when not in use; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in an. air pump constructed and operated as hereinafter clanned.
The inventlon descrlbed and claimed herein is an improvement on that described and claimed in a prior application filed by me December 2 1, 1917, Serial No. 208,535, and is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which 2- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved air pump and indicating the method of its use;

The free end of the piston rod e is provided with a reduced extension 6 on which is mounted a piston f movable longitudinally through a pump cylinder 9, comprising, in the construction shown, a tube of predetermined'length to the ends of' which, on the opposite ends of which, are placed caps g and g and mounted in the reduced end portion of the piston rod 6 is a spring-controlled valve mechanism 6 similar in all respects to the valve mechanism employed on the end of the piston rod shown and described in said prior applic tion, and the purpose of which is to control the admission of air into valve device 9 the tubular piston rod 0 through the end thereof, and said end of the piston rod is provided with a port or passage 6 inwardly of the piston which is controlled by a flexible sleeve a mounted in the piston rod.
The pump cylinder 9 is mounted in a frame member it consisting of parallel side members if, an integral end member It" and an end member it secured to the ends of the side members if, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, this connection of the cylinder with said frame member h is made by means of a threaded sleeve 2' adjustably mounted in the end member 7L and another sleeve j threaded into one end of the sleeve 2', and the sleeve j is provided with an enlarged portion 7' which bears against the cap 9 on one end of the cylinder 9 and binds it between the sleeve 7' and the sleeve 6, as clearly shown in Fig. at. An adjustable packing sleeve is is threaded into the other or outer end of the sleeve 2 and is adapted to compress packing a mounted in said sleeve.
The sleeves z, y and form a bearing through which the piston rod 6 operates and the packing I0 serves to seal said rod or prevent air from passing around the same in its movement. The other end of the pump cylinder 9 is secured in position by a threaded stud m adjustably mounted in the integral end member it in the frame it, the stud on being provided with a reduced portion m which fits in an aperture 9 in the cap 9, as clearly shown in Fig. and the method of 0011- necting the cylinder 9 with the frame it as shown in Fig. 4; will be hereinafter fully described.
The cap 9 on one end of the cylinder 9 is provided with a port or passage adapted to be closed by a movable valve device 9 operated by a lever g secured to a pivot pin g which is mounted in the cap 9 adjacent to the aperture 9 and the cap 9 on the other end of the cylinder g is provided with a port or passage 9 controlled by a The valve devices 9 and are the same as those employed in connection with the opposite ends of the pump cylinder shown in the application hereinbefore referred to. I also employ a packing disk 9 on the caps g and g which serve to seal the connection of said caps with the cylinder 5 as will be readily understood.

angle of the lever in its lowest position as indicated in full lines which is the limit of its downward movement is convenient for the operator of the pump as is also the angle of the lever, as indicated in dotted lines in said figure, which is the extent of the upward movement of the lever, but it will be understood that the lever c, or the pins 0 thereon, may be connected with any of the apertures b in the frame member h to vary this angle.
My improved pump, as hereinbefore described, and as shown in the accompanying drawing, is very simple in construction and operation and is capable of produclng air under great pressure with a minimum amount of exertion by the operator and with the valve device 9 in the position shown in full lines in Figs. 4, 5 and 7, the pump will operate as a double action pump but by moving said valve device into the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 5, by means of the lever 9 said pump will operate as a single stroke pump, in the same manner as the operation of the pump shown and described in my prior application hereinbefore referred to. From the position of the parts shown in Fig. l, the lever c and pump cylinder 9 with the frame it connected therewith may be folded into the position indi- *ated in Figs. 2 and 3 by simply raising the cylinder g and frame it to disengage the pins 0 from the apertures if, after which. the lever c is dropped into the position indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, and the cylinder g and frame it moved into the position indi= cated in said figures, and the handle 0* may be detached from the lever c and placed beneath the base a, as indicated in Fig. 3, the end of the flexible tube d being wapped around the pump in its folded position in any desired manner.
In operating the pump it will be understood that the feet of the operator will be placed upon the base a, one between the U- shaped plates Z) and (Z and the other outwardlv of the plate (Z. and it will be noted that the flexible tube will be free from the last named foot by reason of the upwardly directed channel a? on the base a.
It will be noted that the majority of the parts of my improved pump are composed of sheet metal bent into the desired form and attention is specially called to the fact that the cylinder 9 comprises a sleeve of predetermined length and diameter and that the caps and g merely slip over the ends of said cylinder and are held in firm connection therewith by the sleeves 2' and j, and the stud m connected with the frame member h.
In assembling or connecting the cylinder with the frame it, the sleeve 2' is first moved outwardly in the cross plate 7& which carries with it the cap 9 it being understoodthat said cap had previously been connected therewith by means of the sleeve and the piston rod 6 passed through the sleeves i, y and 7c and connected with the coupling 6Z3, after which the cylinder 9 is passed over the piston 7' from one side of the frantic member h when the piston is in its lowest position or adjacent to the sleeve and the end of said cylinder is placed within the cap g. After which the cap 9 is placed on the end of the cylinder g, and the sleeve 2' is rotated to move the same inwardly, which operation moves the cylinder 9 with the caps g and g thereon toward the integral end 72, of the frame it, to within a predetermined distance from said end, after which the block m is moved inwardly so as to bring the reduced portion m thereof in the aperture in the cap 9 which opera tion binds the cylinder 9 between the sleeves and the stud m, and firmly support said cylinder in the frame member h as will be readily understood.
In the operation of detaching the cylinder 9 and caps g and g from the frame it for the purpose of cleaning or repairing the pump, or the parts thereof, within the cylinder, the stud m is first loosened, after which the sleeve 2' is moved outwardly to such an extent as to permit the detachment of the cap and cylinder 9 from one side of the frame member h, as will be readily understood.
While I have shown a particular arrangement of apertures h in the sides 71, of the frame member h, it will be understood that my invention is not limited to this arrangement nor to the particular location of the pins 0 on the levers c, and various changes in and modifications of the details of the construction herein shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its ad vantages.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class described, comprising a base, and an air pump mechanism involving a pump cylinder, a piston in said cylinder and a rod connected with said piston and passing out through one end of said c linder and pivoted to said base, a frame surrounding said cylinder and in which the same is adjustably mounted, and an operating lever pivoted to said base and loosely connected with said frame.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a base, and an air pump mechanism involving a. pump cylinder, a. piston in said cylinder and a rod connected with said piston and passing out through one end of said cylinder and pivoted to said base, a frame surrounding said cylinder and in which the same is adjustably mounted, and an operating said pump cylinder and in which said ing lever adjustably engageable with said frame.
3. A portable pump device of the class described, comprising a base, an air pump mechanism involving a pump cylinder, a pis ton in said cylinder and a rod connected with said piston and passing out through one end of said cylinder, said rod being pivotally connected with said base at a predetermined distance from one end thereof, a frame member surrounding said pump cylinder and in which said cylinder is ad jlrstably mounted, and an operating lever pivoted to said base at one cnd'thereof and adj ustabl v cngageable with said frame member.

A portable pump device'of the class described, comprising a base, an air pump mechanism involving a pump cylinder, a piston in said cylinder and a rod connected with said piston and passing out through one end of said cylinder, said rod being pivotally connected with said base at a predetermined distance from one end thereof, a frame member surrounding said pump cylinder and in which said cylinder is adjustably mounted, and an operating lever pivoted to said base at one end thereof and ad justably engageable with said frame member, said operating lever being provided with a detachable handle.

A portable pump device of the class described, comprising a base composed of sheet metal which is V-shaped in form in cross section, an air pump mechanism in- [100 volving a pump cylinder, a piston in said cylinder and a rod connected with said piston and passing out through one end of said cylinder and pivotally connected with said base, the ends of the cylinder being closed by caps, a valve mechanism mounted in each of said caps one of said valve mechanisms being adjustable, a frame surroundcylinder is adjustably mounted, means for locking said cylinder in any position of adjustment, and an operating lever pivoted to said base and in operative connection with said frame.

A device of the class described, comprising a base and an air pump mechanism involving a pump cylinder, a piston in said cylinder and a rod connected with said piston and passing out through one end of said cylinder, means for pivoting the outer end of said rod to said base, a frame member surrounding said pump cylinder the opposite sides of which are provided with a plurality of apertures, and an operating lever pivoted to said base and the opposite sides of which are provided approximately centrally thereof with stub pins which are adapted to operate in connection with the apertures in the sides of the frame member.

A device of the class described, comprising a base and an air pump mechanism involving a pump cylinder, a piston in said cylinder and a rod connected with said piston and passing out through one end of said cylinder, means for pivoting the outer end of said rod to said base, a frame member surrounding said pump cylinder the opposite sides of which are provided with a plurality of apertures, an operating lever pivoted to said base and the opposite sides of which are provided approximately centrally thereof with stub pins which are adapted to operate in connection with the apertures in the sides of the frame member, and means for reinforcing the operating lever adjacent to the logation of the stub pins therein.

I prisinga base and an air pump mechanism involving a pump cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, and a rod connected with said piston passing out through one end of said cylinder and pivoted to said base, a frame, devices for mounting said cylinder in said frame, an operating lever pivoted to the base, and means for adjustably connecting said lever with said frame.

An air pump mechanism of the class described, involving a cylinder, a piston movable in said cylinder, a rod connected with said piston and passing out through one end of said cylinder, caps mounted on the ends of said cylinder, valves mounted in said caps, a valve device mounted in the piston end of said rod, a frame, and devices for adjustably mounting said cylinder and the end caps thereof in said frame.

An air pump mechanism of the class described involving a cylinder, a piston movable in said cylinder, a rod connected with said piston and passing out through one end of said cylinder, caps mounted on the ends of said cylinder, a stationary valve device device of the class described com-" secured to one of said caps, a movable valve device secured to the other of said caps, a valve device mounted in the piston end of said rod, a frame, and devices for supporting said pump mechanism in said frame and for adjusting the same longitudinally therein.

An air pump mechanism of the class described involving a cylinder, a piston movable in said cylinder, and a tubular rod connected with said piston and passing out through one end of said cylinder, caps mounted on the ends of said cylinder, means for providing an air-tight connection between the caps and the cylinder, a valve mechanism mounted in the piston end of the tubular rod, a stationary valve device mount ed in one of said caps, a movable valve device mounted in the other of said caps, a frame surrounding the cylinder, devices mounted in one end portion of the frame for adjusting the cylinder longitudinally thereof, and means in the other end portion of the frame for centering the corresponding end of the cylinder in the frame and for holding it against lateral displacement.
12. A device of the class described, comprising a base and an air pump mechanism, means for pivoting one end of said pump mechanism to one end portion of said base, a member adapted to adjustably support said pump mechanism, an operating lever pivoted to the other end portion of said base, and means for adjustably engaging said lever with said member.
