H. vJ. WEPPLO AIR PUMP Filed Feb. 27; 1925 latentedY Apr. 5, 1927.
` HENRY .'r. WurrLo, or MrNNEAPoLis, MmNnsorA.
AIR ruivrr.
Application led February 27, 1925. Serial No. 12,088,
This invention relates to improvements in lair pumps and particularly to those of the hand-operated typeused to inflate a pneumatic tire of an automobile or bicycle.
Aparticular object of'this invention is to provide a manually operated reciprocating pump havingineans whereby the operator may use 'footpower on the downward-movement -of the` piston andthe device embodies improvements in the VVpump for a similar purpose shown and described in my pending application #736,626,` `filed September 8, 1924. f
The invention consists generally ink various constructions and combinations all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed `out in the claims.
InV the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, p
Figure 1 is. a vertical sectional view through a hand and foot operated pump enibodying my invention; l
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2--2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional View on the' line 33 of Figure 1; e
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a detail of the plunger head or piston. Y
In the drawing, 2 represents the base of the pump having on one side a hinged foot piece 3 adapted to swing down to a horizontal position to receive the foot during the pumping operation and adjacentv to this hinged foot piece is a hose 4 leadingl from a passage 5 in the base to the tire to be inflated. 6 represents the pump barrel and 7 is a piston rod on which the piston head or plunger is mounted. This 'head or plunger comprises van upper disk 8 and a lower disk 9 between which the flexible packing disk of suitable material such as leather 10 is held, the edges of the disk bearing onvthe inner Vwalls of the barrel as usual in devices of this kind. One side of the lower disk is cut away as indicated at 11 in Figure 5 so that the flexible disk isvunsupported-on the upward movement of the plunger and will therefore swing down to the position indi'- `cated by dotted lines in Figure land V.allow theplunger 'to move easily in the barrel and at the; same time permit the free 4flow of air from the upper portion of the barrel to the space rbeneath the plunger. Upon the down `stroke of the plunger7 the flexible disk will move outwardly against the walls of the barrel and be seated against the upper disk 8. The lower disk 9 serves in effect as a flapper valve on thefdown stroke of the plunger providing a quicker closure of the barrel. lVith the old type of leather cup and washer, when the cup became worn and dry the plunger head would have to move sometimes 6 or 8 inches before the pressure was sufcient to expand the cup againstltlie walls `of the Y barrel. 1 y
At the top of the barrel is a capV or -cover 12 having an opening 13 therein in which the plunger rod 7 is adapted to slide.. An
extension 1 4 is providedon one side of the. 'cap 12 and in this extension a rod 15 is slidable parallel with the plunger rod but outside the barrel. y l5 has an outwardlyturned part 16 forming a foot piece or rest for the foot of the operator and near this :foot piece preferably the rod has a loop 17 which loosely encircles the pump barrel' and is freely slidable thereon forming with the pump barrel a verticalguide for the rod 15. rlhe base 2 has preferably an extension 18 beneath the foot piece 16 and forming a stop therefor and l preferto provide a bar 19 in this base and a strap 20 which encircles the bar and the foot piece 16 and hask the function of The lower end of the rod.
locking the rod and plunger in a depressed position so that the pump can be conveniently packed or stored away inthe tool box of an automobile. When the pump is to beused, the strap will of course be loosened to allowV the free reciprocation of the rod 15 `and the plunger. The upper end of the rod has an angled extension 21 which overhangs the pump barrel and this extension has an orifice 22 in alignment with the plunger rod and adapted to receive the upper end thereof and wherein said rod is secured by suitable means. The cap or cover 12 isreadily removable from the pump barrel Vand when released will allow convenient access tothe barrel and the plunger therein.
This cap, with the extension thereon, serves prevents rotary or swinging movement of the operating rod 15 around the barrel. In using the pump, the operator will grasp the angled upper end of the rod 15. and put i one foot onthe extension 16 at the lower` Vend ofthe rod andthe downward stroke of the plunger, usually accomplished laboriously the hands and `arms will bc easilyelected by the. power obtained through the pressure of the foot on the operating rod. 0n the up stroke the hands and arms may he utilized merely to raise the plunger and the foot. lVith the manner shown of eonnecting the plunger rod with the operating rod, the attendant does not have to direet any of his attention to the guiding of the moving parts of the pump or in preventing` them from swinging. around the pump harrel, the rod 15 being positively held by the guide on the upper end ot the pump barrel and ivhile it may slide freely vertically in said guide it Cannot swing around the harrel and move the foot piece 16 to a position out of alignment With the extension ot' the base.
I claim as my invention:
l. The combination with a pump barrel and a plunger and rod therefor, ot' an operating rod arranged outside oit said barrel and having an extension adapted to eneirele the barrel andv slide thereon, the upper end ot said operating. rod having an angled extension forming a hand grip overhanging said pump barrel, said angled extension having an oriliee therein and said plunger rodi having its upper end removably secured in said orifice, a guiding means for said' operating rod on the upper end of said barrel, the
lower end of said operating rod having a 'lootpieee to reeeive the toot ot the operator, the pressure of the hand ot the operator on said hand grip heilig in line with and exerted or transmitted directly to said plunger rod.
2. rlhe combination with a pump barrel and a plunger therefor, ot two rods, one torniiug the plunger rod and eonneeted at its loiver end to the plunger aud projeetinfgr up'ifardly through and beyond the top of said barrel, the other forming an operating rod and havingl oppositely projecting angled extensions at its ends, one extension formingr a i'iootpieee at the lower end oi" the rod and having' a guiding means adapted to en'- eirele and slide on said barrel, the other extension overhang-ing the top el the barrel and intersecting the axis o't said plunger rod and having means for Connection therewith, said operating rod having a guidingv means at the top ot said barrel and said rods heing in adjacent parallel relation, the guiding` means tor said operating rod eliminating lateral or side strains thereon.
ln witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of Fehruary, 1925.
