This invention relates to improvements in lair pumps and particularly to those of the hand-operated typeused to inflate a pneumatic tire of an automobile or bicycle.
Aparticular object of'this invention is to provide a manually operated reciprocating pump havingineans whereby the operator may use 'footpower on the downward-movement -of the` piston andthe device embodies improvements in the VVpump for a similar purpose shown and described in my pending application #736,626,` `filed September 8, 1924. f

In the drawing, 2 represents the base of the pump having on one side a hinged foot piece 3 adapted to swing down to a horizontal position to receive the foot during the pumping operation and adjacentv to this hinged foot piece is a hose 4 leadingl from a passage 5 in the base to the tire to be inflated. 6 represents the pump barrel and 7 is a piston rod on which the piston head or plunger is mounted. This 'head or plunger comprises van upper disk 8 and a lower disk 9 between which the flexible packing disk of suitable material such as leather 10 is held, the edges of the disk bearing onvthe inner Vwalls of the barrel as usual in devices of this kind. One side of the lower disk is cut away as indicated at 11 in Figure 5 so that the flexible disk isvunsupported-on the upward movement of the plunger and will therefore swing down to the position indi'- `cated by dotted lines in Figure land V.allow theplunger 'to move easily in the barrel and at the; same time permit the free 4flow of air from the upper portion of the barrel to the space rbeneath the plunger. Upon the down `stroke of the plunger7 the flexible disk will move outwardly against the walls of the barrel and be seated against the upper disk 8. The lower disk 9 serves in effect as a flapper valve on thefdown stroke of the plunger providing a quicker closure of the barrel. lVith the old type of leather cup and washer, when the cup became worn and dry the plunger head would have to move sometimes 6 or 8 inches before the pressure was sufcient to expand the cup againstltlie walls `of the Y barrel. 1 y

When the pump is to beused, the strap will of course be loosened to allowV the free reciprocation of the rod 15 `and the plunger. The upper end of the rod has an angled extension 21 which overhangs the pump barrel and this extension has an orifice 22 in alignment with the plunger rod and adapted to receive the upper end thereof and wherein said rod is secured by suitable means. I claim as my invention:

The combination with a pump barrel and a plunger and rod therefor, ot' an operating rod arranged outside oit said barrel and having an extension adapted to eneirele the barrel andv slide thereon, the upper end ot said operating. rod having an angled extension forming a hand grip overhanging said pump barrel, said angled extension having an oriliee therein and said plunger rodi having its upper end removably secured in said orifice, a guiding means for said' operating rod on the upper end of said barrel, the
lower end of said operating rod having a 'lootpieee to reeeive the toot ot the operator, the pressure of the hand ot the operator on said hand grip heilig in line with and exerted or transmitted directly to said plunger rod.
