Be it known that I, Osons TEMPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jefferson City, in the county of Cole and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle-Pumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in bicycle-pumps, and has for its object to provide a telescopic foot-pump the parts of which are design ed to fold in close compass in order that the device may be handily carried by the rider.

To this end my invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

-In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a central vertical sectional view showing the pump-cylinders extended and the piston up. Fig. 2 is a similar View, but shows the piston down to the bottom of the inner cylinder. Fig. 3 shows the pump closed or telescoped Fig. et shows a detail View of the piston-rod and folding handles. Referring to the drawings, the letter A designates a base or outside cylinder provided at its lower end with supporting-legs b and a Vcentral nozzle c for the eduction of air, to

which ahose or tube is to be applied. A metal band d is suitably pivoted to one of the legs b Vand is adapted to be swung under between inner end a piston-head g', and in practice this rod will be of such length that when the piston-head is at its lower-most position it will close and serve as a head for the lower end of the inner cylinder. Y

The end of the piston-rod which projects through the upper head of the inner cylinder is provided with an eye h, to which a handle is attached. This handle comprises two rightangled bars i j, an arm il' `7" of each bar having an eye by which it is pivoted to the pistonrod by means of a pin or otherwise. The hole in the upper head of the inner cylinder is just large enough to permit the piston-rod to work loosely through it. The lower pivoted ends 'j of the handle bridge across this opening and serve as stop-shoulders to prevent the piston from dropping out of the inner cylinders.` By this construction it will be seen that when the pump is not in use the handles may be turned in opposite directions, so that the horizontal portions thereof will lie close alongside the outer wall of the pump in vertical disposition.

It will be seen that the act of forcing the pist-on down first forces the air from the movable inner cylinder E until when the piston arrives at the lower end of the inner cylinder the air is entirely expelled therefrom. At this point the ends of the arms c" j abut on the upper end of the inner cylinder and the piston arrives at the lower end of the latter. The piston then serves as a head for said inner cylinder, which, when forced through the outer cylinder, expels the air from the latter.

By the construction herein described I provide a bicycle foot-pump which is of small compass and can be carried handily by the rid er, and yet is adapted to furnish a copious supply of air by which a tire may be quickly inflated.
