FOLDING UMBRELLA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,043, dated October 5, 1897.
Application filed December 31, 1896. Serial No. 617,542. (No model.)
' Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification, reference beh ing had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
This invention relates to improvements in folding umbrellas, the objectthereof being to supply a durable article of this character which will take up but a very small space when folded and which comprises a strong durable structure adapted to stand considerable pressure when opened for use.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a vertical sectional elevation of my improved umbrella, showing the same opened. In this view, for purposes of illustration, one set of ribs only is shown. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation showing the umbrella folded, and Fig. 3 is a detail vertical elevation illustrating the construction of the lower or handle portion of the stick.
In the practice of my invention I provide, primarily, atube A, this tube being composed, preferably, of sheet metal. To the upper end of this said tube the lower notched runner B is secured, and this said runner carries the braces G.
- lower end of the rod, and this said lug slides within the slot at of the tube A.
Mounted upon the upper end of the rod D is the top notch E, which has the ribs F at tached thereto in the manner common to all ordinary umbrellas. These said ribs F comprise two sections fand f, and they are hinged to each other at f the respective sections 1 and 2 of the hingeshaving shoulders 3 and 4 thereon which abut against each other to limit the movement of the framework when the same is opened. A supplementary handle or 7 projection E is connected to the top notch E and is adapted for use in operating the device. The tube A is further provided at its lower end with a slot a for engagement with a spring-latch g of the sliding rod G, which said rod carries at its outer end the handle i. The rod G is also provided with a projecting lug g, which slides within a slot a of the tube A.
The handle G is provided upon its inner end with a recess 9 which engages with the lower end of the tube A when the device is folded, as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig.
3 of the drawings.
In the operation and use of the device when it is folded ready for packing away the ribs are folded over upon. each other, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and the respective rods D and G are forced within the tube A, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
When it is desired to use the umbrella, the ribs are carried downwardly until they are extended, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The user will then grasp the handles E and G, one in each hand, and pull them away from each other, whereby the umbrella 8 5 will be opened, and the respective springlatches of the rods D and G will automatically look within the slots at and 0?, adapted to receive them, and the umbrella will be maintained in rigid open position until the C spring-latches are released from their slots.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi In a folding umbrella, the combination of two telescopical rods having handles upon the outer ends thereof, and a tube for receiving said rods, the lower of said rods provided with a circumferential groove in the handle theremy invention I have sign ed my name, in presof, adapted to receive the lower end of said ence of two witnesses, this 16th day of No- 1o tube, and a framework comprising folding vember, 1896.
ribs attached to a runner on the tube, and 1 7 W 1 means for locking the rods in an extended or AR1 HUR HOFB LEIT' outward position, substantially as shown and Witnesses:
described. 0. SEDGWICK,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as B. MCOOMB.
