To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER H. SEL- HAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in folding umbrella frames its object being to provide a simple and strong construction of frame which may be conveniently folded to allow it to be placed in a grip or other receptacle or to be extended into ordinary carrying position.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved umbrella frame in extended position partly broken away, Fig. 2 is a section on line v v of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of a portion of the umbrella stick in extended position, Fig. t is a side elevation of the same folded.

As shown in the drawings my umbrella stick consists of a series of telescoping sections 2, 3 and 4, the section 1 carrying suitable handle 5 and the section 2 forming a support for the umbrella ribs. The contracted end 6 of the handle rod 1 is pivotally connected by a link 7 with the rod 3 slidable in the rib supporting tube 2. Sliding movement of the rod 3 is limited by a pin 8 carried by the tube and extending into a longitudinal groove 9 in the rod 3. lVhen the rod 3 and end 6 of the handle rod 4 are in position in the tube 2 to hold the umbrella stick extended they are held in such position by a spring catch 10 secured to the inner side of the tube 2 and having a hooked end 11 to extend into an opening 12 formed in a contracted extension at the inner end of the rod 3 to hold said parts against movement. The catch 10 is formed with a finger projection 13 extending through the side of the tube 2 to allow it to be depressed.

A head 14c of ordinary construction is secured upon the upper end of the umbrella stick to support in the usual manner the upper ends of the rib sections 15. Similar rib sections 16 slide upon the rib sections 15 and are each connected by means of a collar 17 with a stretcher 18 connected at its other end with a runner 19 slidable upon the umbrella stick in the ordinary manner. The runner 19 is held in the position shown in Fig. 1 to hold the parts extended by means of the spring catch 20 secured within the tube 2 and adapted to project through opening in the tube and runner. Secured on the outer end of each rib section 15 is a collar 21 carrying a spring 22 adapted to engage with the collar 17 when the rib sections are extended as shown in Fig. 1 to hold said sections from movement. The fabric 23 is secured in covering position upon the rib sections in any desired manner, such as shown in Fig. 1, and so as to fold up with the rib sections when the same are telescoped.

In use, the umbrella stick will be extended and the links 7 and narrowed portion 6 of the rod 4: pushed up into the rib supporting tube 2 as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3. As the rod 3 is carried to innermost position the spring catch 10 will interlock therewith as shown in Fig. 3. By then pulling the runner 19 downward upon the umbrella stick the rib sections will be forced into extended position. When thus extended the springs 22 will bear against the collar 17 to hold the rib sections from movement. The runner may be then raised and lowered upon the umbrella stick in the ordinary manner to raise and lower the ribs thus opening and closing the umbrella. When it is desired to fold the umbrella the runner 19 will be first carried to lower position bringing the ribs downward against the umbrella stick, and

by holding the ribs in downturned position and raising the runner the rib sections will be shoved together. The catch 10 then being depressed will allow the handle portion of the umbrella stick to be withdrawn and folded.

I claim:

An umbrella stick composed of a hollow member, a rod slidingly received in said member, a handle rod having a contracted inner end adapted to be received in said member, the outer end of said member being adapted to abut the shoulder formed by said contracted inner end of the handle rod, a link connecting said rods, said first rod having a longitudinal slot, the ends of which terminate at points spaced from the ends of said first rod, a pin carried by the hollow member to extend in said slot, a contracted extension formed on the inner end of said first rod and provided with an opening between its ends, and a spring catch operable from the exterior of said hollow member having one end riveted to the interior of the hollow member and having a the inner end of the slot and thereby restrict 10 hook on its opposite end, said hook being the outward movement of the first rod. adapted to ride over the free end of said In testimony WhereofI afliX my signature contracted extension and being for engage in presence of tWo Witnesses.
