IMPROVEMENT'IN BAG-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,130, dated August 6, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE G. HOLLINGER, of Mount Joy, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders,

of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to devices for holding open the mouths of bags and suspending them during the process of filling; and my improvement consists of a loose suspending-link, hinged to the block which supports the bag-holder so as to suspend and clamp the said block to the notched standard by the oblique position of. said loose hinged link, and to release the holding-block by causing said link to describe the arc of a circle centering upon the supportingnotch of the standard, thus producing a very safe, cheap, and convenient holding device for bags.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents aside elevation of my improved bagholder; and Fig. 2 represents a similar view, showing the manner of releasing the holdingblock and link to adjust them to diiferent-sized bags.

The supporting and adjusting block A is provided with a hinged connecting-link, a, which seizes over and upon the notches b of the standard B, and thus the block, by the force of its own gravity, will take the position I shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing and be held in a clamped position to the standard. The heavier the weight of the bag the tighter will the block clamp itself to the standard, and when the block is clamped the hinged link is in a line at an angle'of about forty-five degrees, and when the block is lifted in the operation of adjustment said link describes an arc centering upon the supporting-notch.

When it is desired to lower the holdingblock, for the accommodation of, a small bag,

the block is drawn upward until it frees the hinged link a from the notch b,when said link with its block A can then be lowered to rest I upon any of the notches required, and at any suitable distance from the base of the standard.

The holding-arms 0, consisting of a single piece of strap metal, bent into shape, are firmly secured to the block A. These holding-arms O are provided at the ends with lips c for holding the bag, being bent slightly outward to prevent tearing of the material.

Bag-holders have been used with notched standards, over which fixed arms have been fitted for the adjustment of bags at various heights; but it is apparent that my invention of the loose hinged clamping-link has material advantages in the ease with which it is operated and the cheapness of its construction. It has the additional advantage of being durable and conveniently adjusted, andis not unhooked by the accidental raising of the arms of the holder.

The holding-block A should be long enough to cause the strain of the oblique link to always hold the block flush with and tight against the standard, except when the link is moved in the arc of a circle to adjust the bagholder higher or lower.

Claims.

In a bag-holder, I claim the loose suspendinglink a, hinged to and combined with the holding-block A, and the notched standard B, as and for the purpose described.
