Description

I E) H. EVANS.
- DOUBLE 10mm 08 UNIVERSAL 10mm) Box SPANNER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT.V27,' I9l7- 1,300, 148. Patented Apr. 8, 1919- nouiann aomrnnoa nrvEnsAL-Joinrnn'noxgsrltnnn i i To all whom it mag/ concern: x r. a
Be it known that I, EDWIN Honsnnne'rr aim and Ireland, residing at 17- Chelmsfordroad, Laytonstone, inthe county of Essex, En land, have, inventedcertain new and use ul Improvements infDoub'le Jointed or Universal-Jointed Box-Spanners; andI do hereby declare the followingfto be'a "full,
clear, and exact description of the; inven-I tion, such as will enable others skilled 111 the art to which it appertains to make and u use the same.
This invention relatesto improvements in] connection with double jointedor universal jointed box spanners and has for its ob ect the properly screwing up of nuts in conriec tion with the gland plates of watertight bulk head plates as fitted in refrigerating ships for the brine service pipes, or for any other purpose of a similar character'where nuts are inaccessible to ordinary spanners,
as for instance it is found in practicethat many nuts are fittedin close proximity to pipes, around the flanges of elbow plpes where the screwing up of the nuts has to be performed right under the bend of. such pipes, also on bulk heads and other situations where ordinary spanners cannot be applied on account of the said nuts being out of a.
' I handle f of the guide are secured together accessibility, suitable guide .means being" provided to facilitate the use'of the wrench, and the parts of the, wrench or spanner being so connected that the greatest rigidity will be attained. 4
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 illustrates the spanner in elevation showing the-curved extremities of theouter fork a cut away which enables theinner fork b to be operated so that thedesired angle can be arrived at. r
Fig. 2 is a plan" showirfg that the large.
fork or joint "edgwise is no greater in width than the outside diameter of box-spanner;
Fig. 3 is an end view in sectionalong the line 33 of Fig. 1, showing the two pins connecting the joints together.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the block through a which the intersecting pins pass for connecting the forks together.
do not wish to be limited to such features 1 5 and screws'forattachment to 0?.
Fig-Q 5 isanelevational view pf the same. 5 5
r v is tlie 'spannei'fguideshowiiig the EvANs, a subject of the King of Great .Brlt f' Fig; 7' isa transverse sectional view of guidefthesection being taken along the line 1 of Fig.- 6.
. Fig. --8 is a side eleviationalviewof oneiof permanent box of the tool; and
Fig. 9 is a plan View of the same.
In the various figures the letter a repre sents the outer fork or"joint.' The smaller" or inner fork I) being connected to the outer 'the adapting sockets, the box of same to be L fork'or joint by means of block 0 and pins d ande- The outer fork comprises a shank I a equipped "with a box sp'anneror socket a3 7 on one end particularly for the purpose .of"
receiving adapters or I auxiliary sockets 0.
The other end of the spanner .is forked. and v has theinner faces of its terminals-beveled;
The outer endof-the handle of said inner fork is square to which a T handle or span? ner of any description may be "applied for;
gle for screwing upthe nuts. 7 f indicatesth'e operating the box spanner'to the desired an 7:
loosely embrace the shank a The jawsand by means of anut and bolt connection f 1 a The adapter 0;, as shown in Fig. 8, 'com- 'prises a polygonal socket "which has a" squared extension formed-thereon both ends of which are beveled. Alpine; is'mount ed v in the spanner box a and through an "open ing al in theiextension 0 The opening a? g i is relatively larger than the diameter of the I pin a? to -perlnit oscillation ofthe latter; thereby allowing the. spanner; head to as-' sumea diagonal position onthe extension for contact withthe upper beveled-end of the latter at one side and with the lower beveled end on the opposite side.
v It is obvious that'those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and an the 'fspir-it of my invention, and therefOreI except as maybe required by the claims; I claim- V, rangements of parts without departing from.
1. A device as set forth includingasocket equipped with a shank the free terminalof which is forked, a handle movably'mounted between the legs of the fork, and a guide e loosely embracing said shank.
. socket, an auxiliary socket equipped with an extension polygonal in cross section for en gegement in said polygonal socket, said ex- 7 1o tension having-its terminals beveled to per- Init torsional movement of the extension in the socket, said extension provided with an opening therethrough, and means arranged through said polygonal socket and the opening in the polygonal extension to hold the latter in the socket.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
