Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1912.
Application filed February 6, 1912. Serial No. 675,737.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALPHoNso O. Incan- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Montcalm and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches of the spanner type primarily intended for hose couplings, and has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive wrench, which is double-acting in that it can be turned either to the right or left to screw or unscrew the members of a. coupling without disengaging the tool, and is also duplex being provided with two separate sets or pairs of engaging means or hooks, one set or pair being arranged at each side of the tool, so that the wrench can be quickly applied without the necessity of ever reversing.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will appear in the course of the following specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating the manner of applying the wrench, that is, one wrench to each of the members of a hose coupling, preparatory to screwing the coupling members together. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the wrench. Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
Referring to the drawings, 3 designates the handle of the wrench, which is preferably straight as shown. At one end the handle is connected centrally or merges into a semi-circular or U-shaped yoke 4 having an inner flat, relatively broad face 5. The yoke extends in the same vertical plane with the handle 3 and comprises oppositely-disposed, correspondingly-shaped arms (5, the free ends of which terminate in inverted T- shaped enlargements or heads 7, which are arranged substantially parallel. The inner or upper face of each head at each side of each arm is provided with a curved depression or notch thereby forming hooks 8 on the ends of the head at opposite sides of the arm, while the lower or outer edge of each head 7 is rounded. The hooks have their entrances opening upwardly.
At its free end the handle 3 of the wrench is provided with an aperture 9 so that the tool can be suspended, if desired, when not in use.
As shown in Fig., 1, when using my wrench it is preferable to employ two, which is possible from the fact that the wrenches are duplex, the opposite set of hooks 8 on each tool engaging the diametrically-opposite lugs on each member of the coupling. In this manner one coupling member together with the hose connected thereto is held stationary, while the other coupling member is rotated, but of course in the final tightening of the coupling the handle of each wrench can be forced in opposite directions, thus obtaining a very tight joint. Obviously when unscrewing the couplings the initial movement can be started by forcing the handles in the appropriate opposite directions.
The advantages obtained by the use of my wrench make it a marked improvement over other tools in use for coupling hose, particularly hose used for fire fighting, in that my wrench is so constructed that it cannot be applied to the coupling members in the wrong manner, and can be used in the dark and under any conditions without the loss of time that follows when itis necessary to carefully apply a wrench.
The wrench is made of a single piece of metal, either cast or forged.
It will be noted that the hooks of both heads are exact duplicates, that they extend from the heads at right angles to the yoke, and that they are in exact alincment as demonstrated by the side elevation Fig. 3.
\Vhat I claim is A wrench of the class described comprising a handle, a U-shaped yoke centrally connected to said handle, said yoke comprising oppositely-disposed, correspondingly-shaped alined arms, inverted T-shapcd heads formed on the free ends of said arms and arranged substantially parallel with respect In testimony that I claim the foregoing to each other, said heads" being each proas my own, I have hereto aifixed my signa- 10 vided with two curved duplicate hooks, ture in the presence of two witnesses.
Which are individually arranged on opposite sides of each arm and having their en- ALPHONSO OHANGY INGERHAM trancesopening upwardly, whereby a wrench Witnesses: 1s provided which is both double acting and MERTON SMITH, duplex. CHAS. KYLE.
