, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WARREN S. BELLO'W'S, F WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T0 W'ALDEN- WORCESTER, ING., OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSA- GHUSE'I'TS.
SOCKET \VBENCH.
Application filed December 31, 1919. Serial No. 348,691.
1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN S. Bnimows, a citizen of the United States, residing at ll orcester, in the county of vVOlCQStGl' and State of h lassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Socket l Vrenches, or which the following is a specitlcation.
This invention relates in general to socket Wrenches, and more particularly to improved means for rigidly securing the socket member to the handle.
The present common method of securing the socket member of a socket wrench to a handle is to insert one end of the handle into a hole in the base of the socket and then drill a hole transversely through both the base of the socket and the handle, a pin be ing driven through said hole and riveted 0 therein so as to prevent turning of the handle in the socket and hold the socket lirinly uponthe handle. This method and construction involves an unnecessary amount of time and expense, as well as multiplying 5 the partsof the Wrench.
1 he objects of my invention are to provide improved means for rigidly connecting the socket and handle of a. socket wrench, and eliminate the time, trouble and expense an incident to the use of a locking pin; to provide a construction whereby the handle is positively prevented from turning in the SOCl-Zll) member, and whereby the socket member is prevented from slipping oil the handle; to obtain such a construction which is strong and durable and which will effectively withstand all strains to which a 10b of this character is usuallysubjected; to secure a construction whereby the handle and socket member may be connected in a single operation and without addition of other parts; to thus connect the handle and socket member by mere upsetting 01' driving of the metal of the socket into the handle; and to obtain other objects and results as may be brought out by the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals of reference indiwate the same parts throughout the several views,
Figure l is a side elevation of one type of socket wrench embodying my invention;
Figaire 3is a vertical sectional View on the line of Figure 2; and
Figure l is a similar view on the line ll of Figure 2.
In the' specific embodiment of the invention illustrated by the drawings, the numeral l designates the handle of the wrench formed of a solid round rod of metal. Upon each end of said handle is mounted in any suitable position a socket member, adapted to engage over a nut or bolt head, the socket member 2 being of a size and configuration to lit one size of nut, while the other socket 3 may be of a dilierent size to fit another size of nut. Both sockets are similar in constructionandare applied to the handle 1 in the same manner so that a description of the socket member 2 will suflice for both.
T he socket member 2 may be arranged at any suitable angle to the handle 1 and comprises a solid base portion 4: at one end there-- of, the opposite end of the socket member being formed with a polygonal shaped socket 5 to receive a nut or bolt head. The solid base portion A isprovided with a transverse ly disposed recess or hole 6 which extends across the axial center of the socket member and is adapted to snugly receive one end of the handle 1, as shown in Figures 3 and a.
In applying the handle 1 to the socket member, one end of the handle is inserted into said hole 6 in the socket member as -far as possible, after which a suitable sharp pointed tool (not shown) is inserted into the one side of the handle, and the walls of the handle 1, so as to form in effect one piece. The play and looseness between the handle and socket member which is incident to the use of a pin fastening means is thus eliminated, and a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention will withstand all many other types of wrenches and tools.
Therefore, I do not wish to limit myself except as required by the following claim when construed in the light of the prior art.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new herein and desire to secure 1 by Letters Patent is:
In a socket Wrench, the combination of a socket member having therein a nut engaging socket and a handle receiving hole, said handle receiving hole being located Within the solid base portion of the socket member with the axis of said hole crossing the axis of the nut engaging socket, and a handle inserted in said hole and held therein by an axially located portion of the, socket member driven into engageni'ent'with said handle from within the 'nut engaging socket.
WARREN s. BELLOWS.
