Be it known that I, CLARENCE G. A. STEINHEISER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oil City, in the county of Venango, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Combined I-beam and Rail-Clamp; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it-appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved rail clamp, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple and improved device of this kind, which may be manufactured for a small cost and sold at a reasonable profit.
A further object of the invention is to provide clamping members having connections with an I-beam, one clamping member on each side of the base of the rail, for clamping the rail securely in position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a locking key for holding the clamping plate in place, in combination with a cotter pin for locking the key in position.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling with in the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed.

Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates an I-beam, the top of which is provided with apertures 2 and 3. The aperture 2 is arranged diagonally to the aperture 3. Rail clamping plates 5 and 6 are provided. These plates are each similarly constructed. Each edge portion of each clamping plate is undercut, to provide the angular recess 7 and the overhanging flange 8. In holdinga rail in place, each one of the sides of the base of the rail may engage the recess 7 whereby the overhang- 4 is "a view in side elevation. of a ingpart 8 may overlie the base of the rail, which base of the rail is designated by the numeral 9. Each clamping plate is provided with an aperture 10, for the reception of a headed pin 11, which is designed to enter either one of the apertures 2 and 3 of the I-beam, it depending entirely, on which side of the rail the clamping plate is arranged, and what position the clamping plate may assume. The clamping plate 5 is on one side of the rail, and the clamping. plate 6 is adjacent the opposite side of the rail. In this case the pin 10 of the plate 5 engages the innermost aperture 2 of the I-beam 1, and the pin 10 of the clamping plate 6 engages the innermost aperture 3 of the Lbeam. However, the clamping plate 5, it is to be noted may be adjusted so that the pin 11 may pass through the outermost aperture 2 of the I-beam. If desired the clamping plate 6 may be disposed whereby its headed pin 11 may engage the outermost aperture 3 of the I-beam. One end of each clamping plate has an underturned hook 12, to engage under the flange of the I-beam. The other end 'of each clamping plate is also provided with a hook 13 extending in a position under the opposite flange of the I-beam. However, the under protruding part of the hook 13 is spaced from the under face of the flange of said I-beam. Itis to be noted that in spacing the under protruding part from the under surface of the flange of the I-beam, a recess 14 is constructed or caused to be formed, and the upper wall 15 of this recess 1st is inclined with relation to the lower wall, in fact inclined in alinement with the underface of the flange 16 of the I-beam'. Each clamping plate has a shoul-- der 17, between which and the wall 18 of the under protruding hook12,'the opposite portions of the flange 16 of the I-beam engages. It is to be noted that the recess 14 is somewhat V-shaped, and is designed to receive a key 19 which is V-shaped in cross section, in fact correspondingly shaped in cross section to conform to and enter said recess. The head end'20 of the key protrudes laterally, hence providing a shoulder 21, which engages one side of the hook member 13, to prevent movement of the key in one direction. A cotter pin 22 extends through an aperture 23 in the smaller end of the key between the part 13 and the edge of the base of the rail, thereby preventing movement of the key in the opposite direction. The
headed pin 11 acts to prevent movement of the clamping plate. It is to be observed that the key 19 is wide enough, so as to underlie the top flange 16 of said I-beam, so as to prevent upward movement of the clamping plate, It being noted that there are two of the clamping plates, one on each side of the rail, each having its overhanging portion 8 engaging the base of the rail, the rail is held securely in place and against lateral movement, and it is to be further noted that either one of the overhanging parts 8 of either clamping plate may be employed.
The invention having been set forth What is claimed as new and useful is 1. In combination, an I-beam, a rail engaging thereon, a clamping plate, one end of the plate having means extending under I the top flange of the I-beam, the other end of the clamping plate having an under protruding hook underlying and spaced from the bottom of the opposite part of the top flange of the I-beam, said hook portion having an adjoining recess V-shaped in cross section, a key engaging said recess and underlying the top flange of the I-beam, means to prevent movement of the key in either direction, said clamping plate having means on each of its opposite edges to overlie the base of the rail to hold the rail in position.
2. In combination, an Lbeam, a rail engaging thereon, a clamping plate, one end of the plate having means extending under the top flange of the Ibeam, the other end of the clamping plate having an under protruding hook underlying and spaced from the bottom of the opposite part of the top flange of the I-beam, said hook portion having an adjoining recess V-shaped in cross section, a key engaging said recess and un derlying the top flange of the I-beam, one end of the key having a shoulder to engage one edge portion of the clamping plate to prevent movement of the key in one direction, a cotter pin engaging the other end of e key in the path of the opposite edge part of the plate to prevent movement of the key in the opposite direction, said clamping plate having means on each of its opposite edges to overlie the base of the rail to hold the rail in position, and means for holding the plate against movement on the I-bean 3. In combination, an I-beam, a rail e11- gaging thereon, interchangeable and reversible clamping plates on the I-beam, one on each side of the rail to hold the same in place, means carried on either edge of each plate to overlie the base of the rail, means to prevent movement of the plate longitudinally of the I-beam, a hook at one end of the plate to underlie one edge of the flange of the I-beam, and locking means for the other end of the plate.

The combination with an I-beam, of a rail engaging thereon, a clamping plate on the I-beam adjacent each side of the rail and having a flange overlying the base of the rail, one end of the clamping plate having connections with one edge of the top flange of the I-beam, the other end of the clamping plate having an under protruding hook underlying and spaced from the bottom of the opposite part of the top flange of the I-beam, said hook portion having an adjoining key receiving recess, a V-shaped key engaging said recess and being disposed under the top flange of the I-beam, one end of the key having a lateral abutment engaging one edge portion of the clamping'plate to prevent movement of the key in one direction, means detachably engaging the other end of the key and being disposed in the path of the opposite edge of the plate to prevent movement of the key in the opposite direction,and means for holding the clamping plate against movement longitudinally on the I-beam.
