Be it known that I, HOWARD E. VAN NESS, a citizen of the United Stitesresiding in Little Falls, in the county of Passeic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lteil-Festeners, of which the following ise specification, i I p Thisinvention relates to rail fasteners, and one of the main objects of the invention is to provide a rail fastenerwvhich is held in place hvclumping members capable of withstanding greet strztins, yet sufficiently resilient to be precticelly immune te tracture. i
Still another object of the invention is to provide, a clzunping means for reiliasteir ers which are sufiiciently yieldeble to prevent destruction by fracture, and thus, although they may be distorted, will never be en. tirely deprived of their clamping effect.

The securing means or screw 26 engeges the clamping mezins forming the main" feature of the present improvement and presses the seine against the dog 21. The dampin means comprises essentially a sheet metal plate C hztving :in upper curved portion 27, a lower straight portion 28, and an ihtermediete connecting portion 29, the upper portion 27 being considerably longer and broader than the lower" portion 28. In the upper portion 27 there is formed,

When the securing means, in the present instance the screw 26, is disposed in the opening 30, the free edge of the lower portion 28 is edeptedto abut against such screw 26 to perch thereeg'ainst While the upper portion 27 is being-expended. To form a suitable perch'for the screw 26, thefree end of the lower portion 28 is provided with at recess 31. and 12, the rail R is secured directly to an I-beam sleeper 33, in which case there are provided two apertures 34: in the upper v rail R, preferably one on either side of the web 12 of the Lbeam sleeper, these apertures 34 being formed similar to the apertures 17 of the tie-plate 15 and having elongated narrow portions 35 adjacent to the base flange 18 and enlarged portions 36at the ends of the apertures 34 remote from the flange 18. In use,somewhat different than with the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, a dog 37 is disposed in the elongated narrow portion 35 of each aperture 34:, the dog having two fingers 38', 38, the inner surface 39 of the upper finger being inclined to correspond with and engage the inclined upper surface of the base flange 18 of the rail'R, while the inner surface 40 of the.
lower finger is not necessarily inclined,but may be straight, as shown, to engage the straight lower surface of the cross-piece 41 of the I-beam sleeper 33. Through the enlarged portions 36, bolts 423 extend. Clamping plates C, such as illustrated in Figs. l to 6 inclusive, are here used, the bolts extending through the openings 30 of the upper portions 27 and engaging the recesses 31, while the intermediate connecting portions 29 engage the dogs 37, and when the nuts 44 of the bolts 43 are driven tight, they will engage the upper portions 27 of the clamping plates C and straighten out such upper portions and press the connecting portions 29 against the dogs 37. The heads of the bolts 13, as shown in Figs. 10 and 11, engage the lower surfaces of the cross-piece 41 of the I-beam sleeper 33.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the. details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. 7
I claim:
1. In combination with the plate portion of a rail bed,-of a rail fastener for a rail having a base flange, anchoring means engaging said plate portion and said base flange, and extensible clamping means for being extended into engagement with said anchoring means and thereby lock the same in place.
2; In combination with the plate portion of a rail bed, of a rail fastener for a rail having a base flange, there being apertures in said plate portion adjacent to said base flange, anchoring means disposed in the apertures adjacent to said base flange and engaging the same, and yieldable clamping means for locking said anchoring means in place.
3. In combination withthe plate portion having a base flange, there being apertures in said plate portion adjacent to said base flange, anchoring means disposed in the apertures adjacent to said base flange, fingers on said anchoring means, one engaging the upper surface of the base flange and the other engaging the lower surface of the plate portion ,adjacentto said base flange, and yieldable'clamping means for locking the said anchoring means in place.
4. In combination with the plate portion of a rail bed, of a rail fastener for a rail having a base flange, there being apertures in said plate portion adjacent to said base flange, anchoring means disposed 1n the apertures adjacent to said base flange, fin-,

5. In combination with the plate portion of a rail bed, of a rail fastener for a rail having a base flange, there being apertures in said plate portion adjacent'to said base flange, anchoring means disposed'in the apertures adjacent to said base flange, finto correspond with and engage the lower inclined surface of the plate portion, and yieldable clamping means for locking the said anchoring means in place.
6. In combination with the plate portion of a rail bed, of a rail fastener for a rail having a base flange, there being apertures in said plate portion adjacent to said base flange, dogs in said apertures-adjacent to said base flange to engage the same, clamping plates, and securing means for pressing said clamping plates into engagement with and securely anchoring said dogs in place.
7. In combination with the plate portion ofa rail bed, of a rail fastener for a rail having a base flange, there being. apertures I vin'said plateportion adjacent to said base flange, dogs in. said apertures adjacent to sald base flange to engage the same, clamping plates, and securing'means extending through the other ends of said apertures and pressing said clamping plates into engagementwith and securely anchoring said dogs in place.
8. In combination with the plate portion "of a rail bed, of a rail fastener for a rail having a base flange, there being apertures in said plate portion adjacent to said base flange, dogs in said apertures adjacent to the other ends of said apertures and press 'ing said clamping plates into engagement with and securely anchoringsaid dogs in place. v
9. In combination with the plate portion of a rail bed, of a rail fastener for a rail having a base flange, there being apertures in said plate portion having elongated narrow portions adjacent to said base flange and enlarged portions at the ends of said apertures remote from said base flange, dogs in said apertures adjacent to said base flange to engage the same, clamping plates, and securing means for pressing said clamping plates into engagement with and securely anchoring said. dogs in place.
10. In combination with the plate portion of arail bed, of a rail fastener for a rail having a base flange, there being apertures in said. plate portion adjacent to said base flange, dogs 1n said apertures adjacent tov said base flange to engage the same, clamping plates each having an upper portion, a lower portion, and an intermediate connecting portion, there being an opening in said upper portion, and securing means 'eXtend ing through the cpeningsof said upper portions and through the ends of said apertures to expand said plates so that their intermedate connecting portions will engage said dogs and securely anchor them. in place.

In combination with the plate portion of a rail bed, of a rail fastener for a rail having a base flange, there being apertures in said plate portion adjacent to said base flange, dogs in said apertures adjacent to said'base flange to engage the same, clamp,- ing plates each having a curved upper portion, a straight lower portion, and an intermediate connecting portion, there being an opening in said upper portiomand securing means extending through the open-v ings of sald upper portlons and through the other ends of said apertures to straighten out said plates so that their intermediate connecting portions will engage said dogs and securely anchor them in place.
12. In combination with the plate portion of a rail bed, of a rail fastener for a rail having a base flange, there being apertures in said plate portion adjacent to said base flange, dogs in said apertures ad acent tosaidbase flange to engage the same.

In combination with the plate portion ofa railbed, of a railfastener for a rail having a base flange, there being apertures in said plate portion adjacent to said base flange, dogsin'said apertures adjacent to said base flange to engage the same, clamping plateseach having an elongatedcurved upper portion, a narrow and short lower portion disposed in an aperture, and an intermedlate. connecting portion connecting said lower and upper portions, there'being an opening in said upper portion, and securing means extending through the openings 0t said upper portions and through the other ends of said apertures and pressing down on said upper portlons, the lower straight portions engaging said plate portion and also said securing means so that when said upper portions are pressed down, the lower portions being fixed, the intermediate connecting portions will. extend outward andengage said dogs.

As an article of manufacture, a clamping plate for a rail fastener having an upper portion, a lower portion, and an intermediate connecting portion, there being an opening in said upper portion,one edge of said opening being in alinement with'the free edge of said lower portion so that the free edge of said lower portion will be engage by the securing means that extend through said opening to clamp said upper and lower portions together while said intermediate connecting portion is extended into engagement with the anchoring means of the rail fastener. As an article of manufacture, a clamping plate for a rail fastener having an elongated curved upper portion, a narrow and short lower portion, and an intermediate connecting portion connecting said upper and lower portions, there being an opening in said upper portion, the free edge of said lower portion being in alinement with one edge of said opening so that such free edge will be engaged by the securing means passing through said opening to straighten out said curved upper portion thereby to extend said intermediate connecting portion into engagement with the anchoring means of the rail fastener.

In combination with the plate portion of a rail bed, of a rail fastener for a rail having a base flange, dogs engaging said plate portion and said base flange for looking the same together, clamping plates each having a curved upper portion, straight lower portion, and an intermediate connecting portion, and securing means for pressing the curved upper por ions of the clamping plates toward the straight lower portions whereby the upper portions will be straightened out and 'the intermediate'conupper portion, a short strai ht lower portion, and an intermediate connecting por tion, and securing means for pressing said curved upper portions so that said intermediate connecting portions will extend into engagement with said anchoring means to securely anchor them in place.
22 In combination with the plate portion of a rail bed, of a rail fastener for a rail having a base flange, anchoring means engaging said plate portion and'said base flange for locking the same together, resilient clamping plates, and securing means for pressing said clamping plates into engagement with and securely anchoring said anchoring means in place.

In combination with the plate portion of a rail bed, of a rail fastener for a rail having a' base flange, dogs engaging said plate portion and said base flange for looking the same together, resilient clamping plates, and securing meansfor pressing said clamping platesinto engagement withand' securely anchoring said dogs in place. 7
