Description

V. WELESK RAIL FASTENER lFiled April 12 1923 Nov. 27, 1923. 1,475,910
WITNESS: Y ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 27, 1923.

RAIL FASTENER.
Applicationv filed VApril 12, 1923. Serial No. 631,655.
are designed to be connected together and secured on a tie by a single bolt.
A further object is to produce a means for fastening rails on metal ties which will prevent the tilting or vertical movement of the ties and retard the creeping of the rails without interfering with the natural longitudinal movement thereof incident to expansion and contraction.
With these objects in view reference is to be had to the drawings which accompany and which form part of this application.
In the drawings Figure l is a perspective view showing a rail fastened on a tie in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is an end view of the tie with parts broken away and parts in section.
Figure 3 is a perspective view looking toward the notched face of one of the clamping members.
Figure 4 is a similar View looking toward the straight face of the cooperating clamping member. n
Again referring to the drawing, the nu'- meral 1 indicates a metal tie provided, adjacent its ends with transverse depressions forming rail seats on the upper face thereof. Only one end of a tie vis shown in the drawing, and the rail which has its base flange received in the seat of the said tie is indicated by the numeral 2.
In a line below and centrally with respect to the depression forming the rail seat the tie 1 has a transverse opening 3 therethrough for a bolt member 4 that has its threaded end surrounded by a lock washer 5 and en- A gaged bya nut 6. The bolt passes centrally through the body portions 7 of myimproved rail clamps.
Bothk clamps are of a similar construction, each including a substantially rectangular body that has one of its faces from its inner end formed with a depression or notch of a depth approximately equalling onehalf of the thickness of the body. The notches, of course, form the said face of the body with a shoulder 8, and against this shoulder the reduced end 9 of the cooperating clamp body abuts. The reduced portions of the bodies are, of course, provided with aligning openings for the bolt 3.
are integrally formed at their outer corners with lips 10, the inner faces of the said lips being arranged at an angle to correspond to the angled upper faces of the base ianges of the rail 2. The lips 10 project a suitable distance beyond what I will term the inner face of the clamp bodies and the under flat faces 11 of the projecting portions of the lips rest on the upper face of the tie as clearly disclosed in Figures l and 2J of the drawing.
Clamps constructed kas above described may be cheaply manufactured and easily applied. As each clamp is of a similar construction a broken or defective clamp may The widened outer ends of the bodies 7 be readily replaced. The clamps, as previ- Y ously stated, are held associated and are secured on both the rail and tie by a' single bolt, and it is thought that the foregoing description` when taken in connection with the drawing will render the construction and advantages of the improvement perfectly clear. to those acquainted with the art to which this invention relates.
Having described the invention, I claim:
l. The combination with a metal tie grooved to provide a rail seat and a rail in the seat, of means for clamping the rails on y tend laterally beyond their bodies to rest on the tie, and a single bolt passing through said members and through the tie for securing the same on the tie in rail engagement,
2. The combination with a tie and a rail resting thereon, of means for clamping the engaging lips which extend laterally from rail on the tie, comprising tWo companion the bodies to rest on the tie and to engage 1o Y members each including a fiat body portion, the base flanges of the rail, and a bolt passhaving their confronting faces from their ing through the lapping portions of l,the
5 outer ends notched for interengagement body and transversely through the ,'@V fOr whereby' both faces of the bodies will be securing the clamp on the tie. flush when associuted, both of saidr'bodies In testimony whereof I aiiix m. signature. l5 having their. outer Corners formed Withrail v Y VINCE WLESKI.
