Be it known that I, JOHN B. MASERANG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belleville, in the county of Saint Clair,

in Railway Ties and Rail Fasteners; and I following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and particularly to ties and rail fastenings.

One object of the lnvention isto provide 'a hollow metallic tie which is strong and durable to support the rails, and which is adapted to exclude mud and ballast.

Another object is to providea t-ie which is so formed that the rail fastener used in connection therewith, is adaptedto properly clamp rails of different sizes;

Another object isto provide a novel and improved form of rail fastening which will not become disengaged from the rail or tie.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.

Referring particularly to the accompanythere is shown an elongated hollow metal tie which includes the top and bottom members 10 and 11, and t-he side members 12, these latter members being secured, at their lower longer edges, to the longer side edges of the bottom member 11, while their upper longer edges are secured to the lower face, of the top member 10 inwardly of the longer marginal edges of said top member. erence will be made later herein. Triangular braces 1a are secured to the outer faces of the side member 12 and to the lower faces of the projecting and apert-ured portions of thetop member 10. A vertical wall 15 extends longitudinally and centrally through the tie, and is'secured to the top and bottom members, the ends of said wall having reduced and apertured portions 16 extending beyond the ends of the tie. End walls 17 are disposed at the ends of the tie, and on the lower edges of these plates are lugs 18 which engage in openings 19 formed in the end portions of the bottom wall 11, of the tie. Each end wall is formed with a vertical central slot 20 which receives the reduced portion 16, of the central wall 15, cotter pins 21 being engaged transversely through the tions 16, whereby to retain the end walls in position. It will beinoted that the projecting edge portions of the top wall 10 are slightly thicker than the remainder of said Wall, whereby to increase the strength of such portions for the retention of rail fastening devices, w ich will presently be described.v

Disposed transversely 22, the sides of the base arranged to lie in close proximity to certain of the openings 13. Disposed upwardly through certain of these openings 13 are the bolts 23, the angular heads 24, of which, bear against the side faces of the side member 12, of the tie, whereby to prevent rotation thereof. Disposed on the upper face of the member 10, and receiving the bolt therethrough, is a plate 25, the opening 26 of which is disposed at such relative dis tances from the sides of the plate as to provide for properly measuring and spacing the edge of the rail from the appropriate opening 13, in which the bolt 23 is to be disposed, whereby to accommodate rails of different sizes. Thus, with one side of the plate 25 directed toward the rail, one size of rail may be used, while with another side of the plate directed toward the rail, another size of rail may be used, and so on with the other two sides of the plate. Disposed on the bolt, and resting on the plate 25, is a plate 27, which has one end extended and tapered for engagementon the upper face of the base flange of the rail, while the other end of the plate 27 is formed with a depending lug'g28 which is disposed downof the tie is the rail flange of which are Wardly throughan adj acentopening 13, said lug,-by its engagement with the Wall of the opening 13, preventing rotation of the plate on the bolt.
