under surface of the rail base, and extend-y ing across therail base 11 at right angles to the length ofthe rail.: One end of the body portion of the anchor is bent upwardly and inwardly to provide a hook-shaped jaw 12 which fits over one edge of the rail base. Theother end is formed with an upstanding flange 13 which, when the anchoris in its applied position, extends abovel the opposite edge .of the rail base. Thisflange is formed along its vertical edges with projecting lugs 15, 16, which, before the anchor is bent to its completed form, are normally in alinement with the flange 13 so as to permit the flange to clearA the edge 14 of the rail base when the anchor is applied to the base flange of the' rail. The device is secured in its operative position by bending the lugs 15, 16 inwardly so that they will engage with the upper inclined surface of the rail base. he
lugs are preferably tapered in width and their under surfaces are beveled at 17 so as to conform approximately to the shape of rail base when they are bent to engage therewith. The'portion of the flange 18 intermediate the lugs 15, 16 is formed with a rigrndifying corrugation 1S, which preferably extends around the lower corner of the anchor, as -indicated at 19 (Figs. 1 and 2) so as to stiffen the anchor at this point. Vith this construction, the anchor device may be made of metal of minimum thickness and at the saine time avoid outward bending of the flange 13 by the pressure resulting from forcingthe lugs 15, 16 upon the inclined surface of the rail base, or by other strains to vwhich the anchormay be subjected during thepresence of a creeping pressure on the rail. The lugs 15, 16 being adapted to be' bent duringthe application of the anchor to the rail, permit it to be readily applied to rails having base flanges of different thickness and slightly different width. W'ithV this end in view, the angles between the lugs' 15, 16 and the body of the flange 13'are filleted at 1'?a so that the lugs will benduntil the fillets make contact with the upper edge of the rail base. A downwardly bent flange 20 provides a tie-abutting meinber adapted to engage one of the vertical faces `of the tie 21. Thertie abutment is ArigidifiedV by means of a pressed corrugation 22, preferably arranged adjacent one of the jaws, so that the anchor will be skewed in a horizontal plane during the presenceof a creeping pressure, and thereby take a biting hold on the vertical edge of the rail base at theforward and rear corners 23, 23u respectively, of .the jaws 12, 13.
In applying the anchor to the rail, the jaw 12 is hooked over one edge of the base flange of the rail, as indicated in dottedilines inA Fig. 1, the portion of the body adjacent thej aw 12 being preferably inclined downwardly, as indicated at 24, to provide a rewardly so as to grip the upper surface of the rail base, as indicated in full' lines in Figs. 1 and 2. The jaw 12, being yieldable, may be applied to rails having base flanges of different thickness, and is adapted to grip the upper and lower surfaces of the rail base with spring pressure. The initial grip of the j aw 13 iseXerted on the upper and lower surfaces of the base flange, though when the anchor is skewed, as above mentioned, the vertical edges of the jaws 12, 13 will take a hold on the vertical edge of the rail. A reverse movement of the rail, it will be observed, will not tend to loosen the device from the rail. l
llVhile I have described my invention in one specific embodiment, it will be obvious that modifications might be made without departure from the spirit of my invention. I therefore do not wish to limit myself to the specific structure as shown and described, except in so far as specific limitations may appear in the appended claims.
Iclaim:
1. A rail anchor comprising a rail engaging jaw adapted to be bent on a vertical line into Wedging engagement with the rail in its application thereto.
- 2. A rail anchor, comprising a body portion formed with a rail base engaging jaw adapted to be bent on a vertical line to project over an edge of the rail base and into wedging engagementwith the rail in its application thereto. i
3. A rail anchor comprising a body portion formed with vertically disposed lugs adapted to be bent over an edge of the rail base and into wedgingengagement with the rail in its application thereto;
4. A rail anchor comprising a body portion formed with vertically disposed lugs adapted to be bent over anedge of the rail base and into wedging engagement with the upper inclined surface of said base.
. 5. A rail anchorcomprising a body portion formed at one end with a jaw adapted to fit over one edge of the base flange of a rail, and formed at the other end with a lug adapted to be bent on a' vertical line, during the application of the device tothe rail` so as to project over the opposite edge of the base flange of the rail.
6. A one-piece rail anchor' comprising a body portion formed at one end with a jaw adapted to fit over one edge of the base flange of a rail, and formed at the other end with a lug adapted to be bent on a vertical line, during the application of the device to the rail, so as V,to project over the opposite edge of the base flange of the rail.
7. A rail anchor comprising a body portion formed at one end with a jaw adapted tol grip one edge of thefbase flange of a rail, andat the other endwith a member adapted to be bent-to project over the opposite edge of said rail base, said member being formed with a stiffening rib adapted to reinforce the member at its point of jointure with the body portion.
8. A rail anchor comprising a body pore tionl formed at one end with a jaw adapted to grip one edge of the base flange of a rail, and at the other end with a member adapted to be bent on vertical lines'to project over the opposite edge of said rail base during the application of the device to the rail, said member bein formed with a stiffening rib adapted to reinforce the member at its point of jointure with the body portion.
9. A rail anchor comprising a body portion formed at one end with a jaw adapted to grip one edge of the base flange of a rail, and at the other end with an upstanding member provided at opposite sides with lugs adapted to be bent on substantially vertical lines to project over the other edge' of said rail base during the application of the device tothe rail, said member being formed with a stifening rib adapted to reinforcev the member at 1ts point of jointure with the body portion.L

A rail anchor comprising a body portionV formed withv a jaw adapted to fit over one edge of-the base flange of a rail and at the other end with lugsadapted to be bent during the application of thev device to the rail so as to engage with the opposite edge or" said rail base, the body portion being pro-` vided with a bend whichpermits the end of the anchor opposite said jaw to assume an initial angular position from which it is sprung during its application to its operative position.

A rail anchor comprising a body portion formed with a jaw adapted to lit over Vone edge of the base flange of a rail, and at the other end with lugs adapted to be bent during the application of the device .to the rail so as to engage with the opposite edge jaw to assume an initial angular position from which it is sprung during its applica@ tion to effect a spring grip of said jaw on the railv when the device is in its operative position.

A rail anchor comprising a body portion formed with a jaw to t over one edge of the base flange or'V a rail and at the other end with means adapted to be bent during the application of the device to the rail to engage with the opposite edge of said rail base, said jaw being formed with a recess adapted to receive the lower edge of said base flange formed so that the anchor assumes an angular position when first put on` 19.
