Be it known that I, HORATIO G. GILLMoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rail-Anchors, of which the following is a specification accompanied by drawm s.
lily invention relates to devices known as rail anchors, rail stays or anticreepers, and one of its objects is to provide a simple device which will prevent the longitudinal movement of the rails of railways generally designated as creeping of the rails.
A further object of the invention is to provide a two piece device, in which one of the parts may be made by the bending of a rolled bar cut to the proper length.
A further object of, the invention is to provide a device; which, while it grips both sides of the rail base and both edges thereof, may be applied to rails which vary somewhat in the dimensions of the base flange.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device which cannot be loosened or detached from the rail by reverse movement of the rail, changes in temperature, vibration or'other accidental cause.
One embodiment of the invention is illus trated in the accompanying drawings, 7 in which Figure 1 is an elevation, looking toward the tie, with the rail in section, showing the device in operative position.

In the embodiment of the invention illus trated in the drawings, A represents the rail having a base flange B of the usualtype resting upon and supported by the tie or sleeper C which is embedded in the ballast material and, therefore, a fixed part of the road bed. the transverse member D and the pressure parts The rail anchor has two parts,

The transverse member is provided with an arm or jaw F, which engages the rail base flange B at one side of the rail; and, at the other end, of the member D there are portions G and H, which are constructed to engage the opposite edge of the rail base B and are connected to the body ortion of the member D by portions I and 'I On the lower portion of the member D, adjacent the portions G andH there is a seat or bearing L, and, between the two ends of the transverse member D, there is formed a tie-engaging flange M. The ortions N and Ocof the portions G and of the member D, which engage directly with the rail base flange B, may be made of such form that they will upset or. deform when pressure in excess of a designed limiting pressure is brought upon them. To facilitate the application of the device the transverse portion of the member D may be initially curved or inclined downward as indicatedat' P in Fig. 2.
The pressure producing part E is formed of steel bar bent to the curve Q at its upper portion so that the end cut R of this end of the bar will form a surface adapted to engage, when the part is in position, the upper surface of the base flange B of the rail A and to the curve S at its lower portion, so that there will be formed on this portion the surface T, which, when the part is in place, will engage the seat or bearing L .of the transverse member D.
The device is applied to the rail by placing the member D with the jaw F engaging the rail base flange B at one side of the rail and then driving the member D transversely until the portions N and 0 will begin to engage the edge of the base flange B at the side then hooked over or engaged with the member D so that the surface T of'the part E engages the seat or bearing L of the meme ber D and the upper end of the part E is brought into engagement with the corner of the base flange B. The part E can then be of the rail opposite to that engaged by the jaw F. A rail H anchor, comprising a flange gripping and bottomengaging element, and a bent'rolled bar adapted so to engage with the rail above and said bottom engaging element'below the rail basethat movement of the rail in "relation to said flange gripping and bottom engaging element will produce angular movement ofjsaid rolled bar and 13a thereby increase the grip of the anchor upon the rail.
7. A rail anchor, comprising a flange gripping and bottom engaging element provided with a tie engaging portion, and a bent rolled bar adapted so to engage with the rail above and said bottom engaging element below the rail base that movement of the rail in relation to said flange gripping and bottom engaging element will cant said rolled bar and thereby increase the pressure of said flange gripping and bottom engaging part upon the rail.
8. A rail an; hor, comprising two rail gripping elements, one of which is provided with means for engaging a fixed portion of the roadbed in opposition to the tendency of the rail to creep, and one of which comprises a bent rolled bar engaging, at one side of the rail only, the base flange above and the other element below the rail bottom.
9. A rail anchor, comprising two rail gripping elements, one of which is formed with means for engaging a fixed portion of the roadbed in opposition to the tendency of the rails to creep and has a jaw engaging the rail base at one side and a shoulder yieldably connected to said element engaging the rail base edge at the other side of the rail,
and one of which comprises an element bearing upon the top of the rail base and engaging the other element to draw and hold said element with said shoulder in engagement with the rail base edge.
10. An anticreeper, comprising two rail gripping elements, one of which is provided with a tie-abutting portion, and one of which comprises a rolled bar so bent that one end of said bar engages the upper surface of the base flange of the rail and the other end forms a hook which engages the other element and presses said other element up against the rail base.
11. A. rail stay, comprising two rail enand gripping elements, one of which is formed with means to give the device a fixed position in the roadbed as against the tendency of the rail to creep, and one of which comprises arolled bar which is bent to such form that itembraces one edge of the rail base and one end of the other memher and clamps the rail between them.
12. An anticreeper, comprising two parts, one of which is a transverse member engaging the bottom and opposite edges of the rail base, and the other a curved rolled bar which embraces one side of the rail base and the other member and exerts pressure thereon, one of said parts being provided with tieengagmg means.
13. A rail anchor, comprising two rail gripping elements, one of which is formed with a tie-engaging fla nge, engages the rail base at one side of the rail, extends transverseiy beneath the rail and engages the base at opposite sides of the rail, the rail base engaging portion at one side of the rail being yieldably connected to the transverse portion of said element, and the other a clamp engaging the rail base above and said element below the rail to draw and hold said element against the rail base.
15. A rail anchor, comprising two rail engaging and gripping parts, one consisting of a part embracing the base of the rail, and the other a rolled bar so curved that one end engages the rail base above and the'other end forms a hook which so engages said part below the rail as to permit angular movement of said bar about said part.
16. A device for preventing the creeping of rails comprising a rolled bar bent to embrace one side of the rail base and a transverse part which engages the rail base at the other side of the rail and intervenes between the rail bottom and said bar, said transverse part having a tie-engaging portion.
17. A rail anchor, comprising a transverse element engaging the rail base at one side of the rail, a clamp constructed by'bending a rolled bar which engages said element below and the base of the rail above the bottom of the rail at the other side of the rail, and tieengaging means attached to one of said elements.
18. An anticreeper, comprising a transverse element having a j aw engaging the rail base at one side of the rail and a portion yieldably connected to said element engaging the edge of the rail base at the other side of the rail, and a pressure producing part engaging the upper surface of the rail base and said element at the other side of the rail and pressing said element against the rail base,
one of said elements being provided with a tie-engaging portion.

A rail anchor, comprising a clamp embracing the rail base at one side of the rail, and a transverse part, having a deformable portion engaging the rail base edge, which intervenes between the clamp and the rail bottom and engages the rail base at the other side of the rail and is provided with a tieengaging flange.
20. A rail stay, comprising a resilient clamp, formed by bending a rolled bar, en
gaging the upper surface of the rail base at one side of the rail, and a transverse member whichintervenes between'said clamp and the rail bottom and embraces the other side of the rail base and is provided with means for engaging a fixed portion of the roadbed in opposition to the tendency of the rail to creep.

An anticreeper, comprising a part formed'at one end with an arm adapted to engage the upper surface or the base flange at one side or the rail and at the other end with rail base edgeengaging portions yieldably connected to the body of said part, and a bent rolled bar adapted to engage said part and the'upper surface of the rail base atone side of the rail, one of said elements having a tie-engaging portion;

An anticreeper, comprising a part formed at one end with a jaw adapted to engage the rail base at one side of the rail and with a deformable edge engaging portion adapted o engage the edge of the rail base at the other side of the'rail and pro vided with means for giving said part a fixed position in the roadbed in opposition to the tendency of the rail to creep and a:
clamp adapted to engage saidfpart below and the rail base above the rail bottom at one side of the rail.

An anticreeper, comprising rail gripping elements, one of which has a tie abutment and portions engaging the rail base at opposite sides or the rail, those at one side of the rail being yieldably connected to said element, and one of which elements is a clamp which bears against the upper surface of the rail base and said element first named the rail to creep.

A device for preventing the creeping of rails, comprising a bottom engaging part constructed to bear upon the bottom of the raiha vertically disposed bent rolled bar adapted so to engage the bottom engaging part that said bar may be rotated trans versely about a longitudinal axis below the rail to be forced into position and, when in position. move angularly about a transverse axis and means for givmg said ClGVlCB a fixed position in the roadbed.

An anticreeper, comprising two rail gripping element's, one of which is formed with means for engaging a fixed portion of the roadbed in opposition to the tendency of the rail to creep and has a jaw engaging the rail base at one side and a portion yieldably engaging the edge of "the rail base at the otherside of the rail, and one of which comprises means for bearing upon the. top of the rail base andengaging the other element to draw and hold said element with said base edge engaging portion in engagement with edge of the rail base.

A device for preventing the creeping of rails, comprising a rail gripping element having a jaw at one end and a deformable retaining catch at the other endof said elemerit, a rail'engaging part for drawing said catch into engagement with the rail base edge, and means for giving said device a fixed position in the roadbed in opposition to the tendency of the rail to creep.

A rail anchor, comprising a rail gripping element embracing the base flange at one side of the rail and provided with a yielding catch projection adapted to engage the rail base flange at the other side of the rail and with a tie-engaging portion, and a rail engaging device pivotally engaging said elementlfor drawing said yielding catch projection into contact with the edge of the rail base flange. A-rail-anchor,comprising a rail gripping element embracing the base flange at one side of the rail and provided with a catch projection adapted to engage the rail base flange at the other side of the rail and a rail engaging device engaging said element rotatably for drawing said catch projection into contact with the edge of the rail base flange.

A device for preventing the creeping of rails, comprising a rail gripping member transversely disposed in relation to the rail provided with a rail base flange gripping portion at one end and a deformable rail base edge engaging portion at the other end thereof, a pressure producing part en gaging the rail base above and said gripping member below the rail, and means for giving the device a fixed position in the road bed as against the tendency of the rail to creep.

An anticreeper, comprising a rail gripping member for transverse disposition beneath the rail provided with a rail base gripping portion at one end and a deformable base edge engaging portion at the other end thereof, a vertical pressure producing part arranged to engage the rail base flange above and said gripping member below the rail and means for holding the lower end of said vertical pressure producing part in fixed position in the roadbed in opposition to the tendency of the rail to creep.
37. An anticreeping device, comprising a rail engaging element for transverse disposition beneath the rail engaging at one side of the rail the uppersurface of the base flange and having yielding engagement with the edge of the base flange at the other side of the rail, a part engaging the rail base above and said element below the rail and arranged to move transversely in relation to the rail for placing in position and affecting the gripping action, and means for giving said device a fixed position in the roadbed in opposition to the tendency of the rail to creep.
38. An anticreeping device, comprising a rail embracing element constructed to engage the top and bottom of the base of the rail at one side of the rail and to yieldably engage the edge of the base flange at the other side thereof, a vertical pressure producing part arranged to engage the base flange above and the rail base embracing element below the rail, and means operative upon the lower end of said vertical pres sure producing part to hold said lower end in fixed position in the roadbed in opposition to the tendency of the rail to. creep.
39. A device for preventing the creeping of rails, comprising a rail engaging and gripping element constructed to engage the top of the base flange of the rail at one side and to yieldably engage the edge of the base of the rail at the other side of the rail, a rail engaging part constructed to engage said gripping element below the rail to effect the gripping action, and means for giving the device a fixed position in the roadbed in opposition to the tendency of the rail to creep.
40. An anticreeping device, comprising a rail engaging element transversely disposed beneath the rail engaging at one side of the rail with the upper surface of the base flange and at the other side of the rail in yieldable. engagement with the edge of the base flange and provided with a portion adapted to engage a fixed portion of the roadbed, and a part engaging the rail base above and said element below the rail and arranged to be moved transversely in relation to the rail for placing said part in position and effecting the gripping action.
41. A device for preventing the creeping of rails, comprising a rail embracing element constructed to engage the bottom of the rail and a fixed portion of the roadbed, to engage the top of the base flange at one side and to yieldably engage the edge of the base flange at the other side of the rail, and a pressure producing part constructed to engage the base flange above and said element below the rail.
42. A rail anchor, comprising a rail base engaging part constructed with a jaw at one end a deformable base edge engaging portion at the other end and intermediate tie-engaging portion and a bearing surface, and a rail base engaging pressure producing element constructed with a bearing surface so coacting with that of said part that rotational movement of said element about said part will force said element into position and effect the gripping of the rail.
43. A device for preventing the creeping of rails, comprising a tie-engaging rail gripping element provided with means for yield-ably engaging the rail base edge at one side of the rail, and a rail engaging part engaging said element for drawing said rail base edge engaging means into contact with the rail base edge.
44. A rail anchor, comprising an element embracing the rail base at one side of the rail and yieldably engaging the edge of the rail base at the other side of the rail, and a part embracing the rail base and the rail base edge engagingend of said element and gripping the rail between'said part and said element.
45. An anticreeper, comprising an element extending transversely beneath the rail with a tie-engaging portion and yieldably engaging the edge of the rail at the other side of the rail and a part embracing the rail base and the rail base sedge engaging end of said element and grippin the rail base between said part and saidv eiment.
46. A device for preventing the creeping of rails, comprising an element embracing one side oit the rail base and yieldabiy engaging the edge of the "other side of the rail base, and apart embracing the rail base and the rail baseedge engaging end of said ela.
