surfaces F and U with it and the cross bar assumes a position at an angle to its original position as indicated by the dotted l nes in Fig. 1. The drawing of the surfaces I of the portion H of the cross bar G into contact with the rail base edge by the forcing of the key D into position has caused the'rail to be gripped between the surface I of portion H and the surface V at the bottom of the jaw at the other end of the cross bar. The angular movement or skewing of the cross bar C will increase the grip of the cross bar 0 upon the rail. The resistance of the device to further creeping movement is thus increased automatically by this movement of the cross bar. The key D is held by the contact of the tie engaging portion S with the face of the cross tie and the pressure transmitted through key D sets up tending to turn or cant key D slightly on the rail. The surface M in contact with the rail is relatively short longitudinally of the rail so that the moment thus set up causes the keyD to cant slightly as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3. This action increases the vertical ressure, produced by the key, of the cross ar C upwardly upon the rail bottom and therefore still further increases the resistance of the device to furthei movement of the rail in the forward direction. This actioncontinues until the resistance to forward movement is equal to the forces tending to produce forward movement and generally a very slight forwardmovement of the rail will be suflicient to make the grip of the device upon the rail sufiicient to withstand all the forces tending to move the rail forward. If the rail through temperature changes moves in the backward direction the first effect will be to carry portion S out of contact with the face of the tie. If the key should be held in the ballast there might be some angular movement of the cross bar upon the rail base but the cross bar would continue to grip the rail between surfaces F and G so that whenever movement in the forward direction again occurred the gripping action of the device would again become effective. The engagement of the key I) with the cross bar and rail will readily be seen to be such that the tightness of the key D cannot be effected by vibration or other accidental causes.

4. A part for rail anchors constructed with surfaces adapted to engage a rail bottom engaging element below the rail and a portion adapted so to engage the upper surface of the rail base flange as to permit angular movement of said part about a longitudinal axis above the rail base.

A rail stay comprising a rail gripping element engaging the rail base at one side of the rail and a part so engaging said gripping element below the rail and the upper surface of the rail base opposite to said gripping element as to berotatable about a longitudinal axis above the rail base for effecting the gripping action of said ele- Y ment.

An anticreeper for rails, comprising a bottom engaging cross bar and a pressure producing part constructed with tie engaging portions adapted so to engage the upper surface of the rail base that rotational 8 movements of said pressure producing part about an axis above the rail base will force surfaces of said pressure producing part into engagement with said bottom engaging crossbar below the rail and thereby 8 produce pressureof said bottom engaging cross bar upon the bottom of they rail and that longitudinal movement of the rail will produce angular movement of said cross bar and automatically increase the gripping action upon the rail.

A rail anchor, comprising a part engaging the top and edge of the rail base flange at one side of the rail extending underneath the rail and engaging the bottoms and edge of the rail base flange. at the other side of the rail and a key provided with means for engaging rotatably with the upper surface of the rail base and with means for engaging said part below the rail base 1 when said key is moved angularly in relation to the ra1l. A rail anchor comprising a flange gripping and bottom engaging element and to engage a cross tie and to so engage the upper surface of a rail base and said flange gripping and bottom engaging element below the rail base that movement of the rail in relation to said pressure producing part will produce angular movement of said flange gripping element and thereby increase "the grip upon the rail.
