PACKAGE-TIE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW C. CLEAVE- LAND, a citizen of the United: States, residing at Spencer, in the county of Clay and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in-P-ackage-Tie's; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in package ties and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device which will effect a material saving in the amount of twine used in tying packages.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which is particularly adapted for use in postofi'ice or other places where great numbers of packages are tied and untied and the quantity of cord or tape used in tying the packages is necessarily large in order to save twine and consequently reduce the .cost of maintenance of the oflice.
A further object of the invention is to provide a package tie which eliminates the necessity of knotting the cord or twine and is so constructed that it may be easily and quickly tied or released. I
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device which may be formed of a single piece of wire bent to form the various jaw members and gripping portions at a minimum expense.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a package showing this improved package tie in place thereon.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the package tie, and
Fig. 3 is a side view in elevation thereof. Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the package to be tied by the device while the numeral 2 designates the cord, twine or tape used for tying the package.
The package tie comprises a stem 3 having a loop 4 formed at one end thereof through which the end of the cord 2 is passed and knotted to form a connection between one end of the cord and the package tie. The opposite end of the cord is left free and is adapted to surround the package and be clampedby the remaining portion of the. package tie: which will be more fully hereinafter described.
Formed on the stem 3 at theendiopposite the loop 4 is a loo-p 5 which forms the lower jaw member'o-f the package tie. This loop 5 is continued to coil around and form the upper jaw member 6 which is positioned directly above the loop 5 and the end of the loop (3 is formed with an extension7 having formed integral therewith the inwardly bent spring finger 8 the use of which will appear as the description proceeds. The terminal of the finger is positioned in close proximity to the shank 3 and is arranged substantially perpendicular with relation thereto as clearly shown in Fig. 2. It will be noted upon reference to Fig. 3 that the terminal of the spring finger is in the same plane with the stem 3 and loop 4 and also that the loop 5 is in the same plane with the stem 3 and loop 4 so that the package tie will lie flatly upon the package.
In use one end of the cord 2 is passed through the loop 4 and knotted and it will thus be seen that the same cannot be withdrawn therefrom. The opposite end of the cord is then passed around the package and thence between the spring finger and the upper jaw member 6. The cord is then turned transversely of the package to extend between the jaw 5 and the jaw 6 and then around beneath the package and up the other side between the jaws 5 and 6 and pass the portion thereof previously positioned between the jaw members 5 and 6 and drawn around so as to lie between the extension 7 and the jaw member 6. It will be apparent that in order to cause the cord to pass when positioned between the jaw members, it will be necessary that a slight jerk be administered to the end thereof and in this way it will be evident that the possibility of the cord becoming accidentally loosened will be eliminated as it cannot slip from position, as it forms a binder for itself.v
In order to loosen the cord the user grasps the free end and moves the same in the direction opposite to the tying direction and with a slight jerk passes the free end of the cord by the portion within the tie and it will be evident that the package may be readily untied.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the com bination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is In a package tie comprising a shank, a lower coil formed on said shank and lying in the same plane therewith, an'upper coil formed integrally with the lower coil and lying above the same, a spring finger formed on the end of the upper coil and extending I downwardly therefrom across said first named coil and then inwardly toward said sh'ank and lying in the same plane therewith, and a flexible nem'ber connected to the end of said shank and adapted to be 'secured between the upper and lower coils and between the lower surface of the coils and the spring finger, as and for the purpose specified.
