Be it known that I, ORMOND S. WHITE, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Wilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art ,to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in package ties.
Theobject of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device, which may be readily applied to and removed from a package, and whichwill not be liable to slip or become unfastened.
The invention consists of a package tie made from a single piece of stiff Wire bent to form a package-engaging bearing plate, and
a securing element.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a perspective view of a package with this improved tie applied thereto; and Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the tie detached.
In the embodiment illustrated, a package 1 is secured by this improved tying device 2. The tying device '2 consists of a piece of stitl wire bent to form a coil 3, then bent upon itself and formed into an elongated flat package engaging loop 4, having an eye 5 formed therein, preferably near said coil3, and with its end bent into a hook 6, which is engaged with the bend 7. The coil 3 is preferably arranged parallel with the plate or loop 4 and is spaced above the same by the bend 7 at the base thereof. A cord or other flexible element 8 is secured at one end to the eye 5 by tying a knot in the cord and threading it through the eye 5 or in any other suitable manner with its free end adapted to be engpged by the coil 3 when the device is apied. p In the use of this device, the flat loop 4 forming the base member is placed on one side of the package 1, and the cord 8, secured at one end in the eye 5, is passed transversely around the package 1, then under the coil 3, around its bent portion 7, then longitudi nally around the package over the loop 4, and is drawn into the coil and passed again therearound to hold the free end of the cord against slipping. The elongated loop 4 when the cord is passed thereover serves to hold the device against twisting or turning under the tension ofthe strain exerted by the binding cord 8.
I claim as my invention,-
1. A package tie comprising an approximately Ushaped member having an eye formed at the free end of one leg and a resilient coil at the free end of the other leg spaced-from said eye and having the lower whirl of said coil spaced laterally from said leg and a member connected with said eye spanning the space between said legs and having means for engaging said coil-carrying leg beneath the lower whirl of the coil, and a flexible element connected at one end with said eye and adapted to have its other end engaged with said coil.
2. A package tie comprising a single piece of wire bent into a coil, then bent downwardly to form a spacing member and extended laterally and bent to form an approximately U-shaped loop arranged in a plane below the coil, said loop having an eye formedat the end of its free leg, said wire being then extended transversely between the legs of said loop and provided with a terminal hook to engage the spacing member of said coil, and a flexible binding element connected at one end with said eye and adapted to '1be connected at its other end with said 001 In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
