GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1era.
Application led October 25, 1918. Serial No. 259,674.
To all 21B/tom, it may conce/rn Be it known that we, JAMES R. MGNAB- my, and CHARLES E. ANDREWS, citizens of the Uni-ted States, residing at Kokomo, in the county of Howard, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
rlhe device forming the subject matter of this application is a gate, and the invention aims to provide a structure of the class above mentioned, which can be adjusted vertically, when it sags, the gate being vertically adjustable for other purposes, such as to permit the passage oi' small stoel; but acting at the same time as a barrier for larger stock.
The invention aims to provide novel means whereby the posts and rails of the gate may be held together, to permit a ver-V tical adjustment of the gate, without the use of screws, bolts, or thel like.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present vinvention appertains.
lVith the above andv other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the co1nbina tion and arrangement of parts andr in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, agate constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a sect-ion taken through the upper end of the end post; Fig. 3 is a section taken through the end post adjacent to one of the cross rails; Fig. lis a section taken throughthe intermediate post at one of the cross rails; land Fig. 5 is a section taken through the intermediate post at one oi the turnbuckles.
In carrying out the present invention there are provided end posts 1, one of which,
is supplied with any suitable means 2 whereby the gate may be suspended for horizontal swinging movement. In the inner edges of the end posts 1, concaved seats 3 are formed. The invention includes an intermediate post et having oppositely iiaring passages 5. Rails 6 extend through the passages 5 of the posts 4 and have rounded ends 7 mounted to rock for adjustment in the seats 3 ofthe end posts 1. Diagonal turnbuclrles 8 are located on opposite sides of the gate and pass through flared recesses 9 formed in the posts 1 near to the ends thereof, the yrecesses 9 coperating with enlarged openings 10 in the outer edges of the posts 1, there being shoulders 1l at the inner ends of the openings 10. Bearings 12 are seated in the openings 10 in abutment with the shoulders 11 and are held against rotation in the openings, the bearings having concaved seats 14 in which convexed washers 15 are mounted to rock for adjustment, the ends of the turnbuckles passing through the bearings 12 and through the convexed washers 15. Flat washers 16 abut against the conveXed washers 15 and there are nuts 17 on the ends of the turnbuckles, the nuts cooperating with the flat washers.
yFrom the foregoing description it will be observed that the ends of the turnbuckles 8 are so assembled with the ends of the posts 1 as to have the necessary play or movement, during the adjustment of the gate, as hereinafter described. It is to be understood, however, that the ends of the turnbuckles 8 may be connected to the posts 1 in any desired way. A turnbuckle 18 vextends longitudinally of the gate and passes through an oppositely flaring passage 19 in the intermediate post 4. The ends of the turnbuckle 18 are pivoted by means of eyes 20, to eyebolts Q1 carried by the end posts 1.
Obviously, by adjusting the turnbuckles 8, the gate may be raised or lowered at its free swinging edge, the rounded ends 7 of the rails 6 rocking in the seats 3 of the posts 1, the passages 5 in the intermediate post 7 being so shaped that the intermediate portions of the rails 6 may have the necessary movement during the adjustment of the gate,
the function of the passage 19 with respect to the turnbuckle 18 being understood readily in view of what has been said hereinbefore in connection with the ends 7 of the rails 6 and the seats 3 in the posts 1.
The free edge of theygate may be raised and lowered, either for the purpose of truing up the gate. vertically, or for the purpose of so adjusting the gate that hogs and other small animals may pass beneath the gate. the gate. nevertheless, serving as a barrier for cattle and relatively large animals. After the gate has been elevated, or adjusted as above described, the turnbuckle 18 may be tightened up, to aid in holding all of the parts of the gate together firmly.
bar having transverse passages; rails having their ends almtting aga-inst the posts Within the seats and mounted to roel; therein, the rails having their intermediate lportions mounted to rook in the passages; and diagonal, longitudinallyvv adjustable tightening de vices having` their ends'assembled with the ends of the posts.
A gate Comprising end poste having seatsvin their inner edges; rails having ytheir 15 ends mountedto rook in the Seats; diagonal,
longitudinally adjustable tightening devices having their ends assembled lwith the ends of A ythe posts; and a longitudinally adjustable tightening device disposed approximately l parallel to the rails, and having its ends aseeinhled with the posts, between the ends of the posts.. n In testimony that we Vclaim the foregoing as our own7 We have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two Witnesses. l
