To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL KOTANCHIK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ranshawfln the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Spike and Nail Pullers, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has to dowith implements for extracting spikes, nails, and the like.
The general object of the invention is the provision of a spike and nail puller embodying such a construction and relative arrangement of parts that it is adapted to take'and retain secure hold of the'spike or nail-to. be pulled, the grip of the jaws on the nail being increased in proportion to the pressure exerted on the handle bar with the result that there is no liability of the jaws being casually disengaged from the spike'or nail.
The novel spike and nail puller is susceptible of being made in various sizes for the extraction of heavy spikes as well. as small nails; and it is also advantageous because its parts are readilyrenewable and also because it is adapted to be used with facility upon spikes or nails that are not readily accessible.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the peculiar construction, novel combinations, and adaptation of hereinafter described and claimed.

The handle bar 1 of my novel extracting device 1s provided at its forward end with a housing 2. This housing 2 is tapered or gradually diminished in width downwardly as indicated'by 3, andits upper wall 4: is preferably inclined downwardly and rearlength of the handle bar.
Suitably connected as by a screw 5 to the upper side of the handle bar 1 is a spring stri 6 which extends longitudinally through an opening 7 in the wall 4 to a position within the housing 2 as illustrated. The forward ends of the side walls of the housing 2 1 are preferably convex as indicated by 8.
At 9 is the transverse bolt for pivotally securing the jaws 10 in the housing. The
said jaws lO are arranged longitudinally side by s1de, a:nd' each is tapered at its inner side as indicated by 11 so as to enable the jaws to better receive between them the head of a nail or spike to be extracted. To facilitate the engagement of the said jaws below the head of a nail or spike the forward ends of the aws are made'convex as indicated by 12. At their rear ends the jaws 10 merge into body portions 13 the rear sides of which are concave,'as indicated'by 14, so as to conform to the convex edges 8 of the housing walls and be supported and braced by the latter. The said body portions 13 merge in turn into shanks 15, arranged alongside each other as illustrated. The outer sides of these shanks are inclined, as indicated by 16 to conform to the taper formation of the housing. Moreover the rear ends of the shanks are preferably rounded as indicated by 17, while the inner sides'of the rear portions of the, shanks are inclined as indicated by 18 with a view to enabling the jaws 10 to move away from each other incidental to the placing of said jaws in engagement with a spike or nail. Each of the jaw'body portions is provided with a stop 19 which reaches transversely to a position above the body portion of the other jaw so that each jaw will operate to prevent undue vertical displacement of the other jaw. The stops 19 have threaded shanks 20, by which they are connected to the bbdy portions of their respective aws.
The parts of the extracting device are assembled as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and so that. the spring stri 6 rests longitudinally above the shanks of the jaws. It will be noticed here that the parts of the implement may be readily assembled and secured in proper position; and it will also be noticed that the parts may be expeditiously and easily disassembled for the removal of any one of the parts or elements for any purpose that may arise.
In the practical use of the implement the jaws 10 are pressed against a door or other surface which will have the effect of pressing the said jaws apart so that they will readily engage the shank of a spike or nail to be pulled at opposite sides of the said shank. Then as the handle bar of the de vice is pressed downwardly on its forward end serving as a fulcrum it will be manifest that the jaws will be pressed inwardly against the shank of the spike or nail, and that the pressure of the jaws will be increased in proportion to the down vard pres sure exerted on the handle bar. This will be appreciated as an important characteristic of the puller when it is understood that the same absolutely precludes casual disengagement of the jaws from a spike or nail incidental to the extraction of the latter.
I have entered into an explicit description of the construction and relative arrangement of the elements comprised in the preferred embodiment of my invention with a view to imparting a full, clear, and exact understanding of the said embodiment. It is to be understood, however, that I do not limit myself to specific details of construction, inasmuch as in the future practice of the neenevc invention such modifications may be made as are fairly anticipated by my appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination in a spike or nail puller, of a handle bar, having a housing at its forward end, said housing being tapered or reduced in width downwardly and being provided with convex forward ends on its side walls and being also provided with a downwardly and rearwardly inclined top wall in the lower portion of which is a longitueinally disposed a ierture, a spring strip extending longitudinally through said aperture and secured adjacent to one end to the upper side of the handle bar, jaws arranged side by side and having convex forward ends and inner sides shaped to receive a spike or nail head between them and merging at their rear end into body portions, said body portions having concave'rear sides movable against the convex forward ends of the housing walls, and merging, in turn, into side by side shanks, said shanks having inclined outer sides snugly fitting the side walls of the housing and also having a play space between their rear pOItlOllS and further having their rear ends rounded, a transverse pintle pivotally connecting the jaw shanks with the housing, and a stop carried by the body portion of each aw and disposed transversely above and in disconnected relation to the body portion of the other jaw.
