Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented Mar. 18, 19151.
Application led September 7, 1918. Serial No. 253,103.
To all whom t 'may Concern Be it knoiwn that I, RICHARD FITZGERALD, a citizen of the 1United States, residingat Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful improvements in Supports, of which the following as a specification.
This invention has reference to a supporting mea-ns for news sheets, posters or the like and has for its object to produce an article of this character which shall be of a simple construction, adjust-able.' to accommodate itself to various sizes of sheets. cheap to manufacture, and thoroughly efficient for the purpose devised.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a. perspective view illustrating the application of the improvement;
Fig. 2 is a view looking toward the rear thereof;
F ig. 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 3-B of Fig. 2;
F ig. el: is a sectional view approximately on the line l1-1: of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the. sheet engaging members; v
Fig. 6 is a view illustrating the, device supported from a bracket; and
Fig.. 7 is a perspective view of one of the clips.
The sheet engaging members, being of a similar construction are each indicated by the numeral 8. Each ofthese members is constructed from a single strip of suitable, preferably spring material that is centrally bent upon itself-providing two spring sides 9-9. Between these sides the sheet 10 is adapted to have its edges received, and when in such position the sides 9-9 are forced toward` each other by suitable U-shaped clips 11.4 Each of the members 8 has one of its sides 9, adjacent one of its ends secured thereon, or formed therewith afhook 12, the said hooks 'being designed to receive rings 13 that are connected by a suitable flexible element 14 such as a cord, chain or the like, and this flexible element is adapted to be received on a nail, or other projectingelement which forms a support for the device.
Formed on the same side of the members 8 having the clips 11 thereon, and disposed centrally thereof are socket members 15, one being provided for each of the members 8. These sockets have their outer ends closed and are adapted to receive therein the reduced ends of two telescopic elements 1G and 17 respectively. The member 1G .is solid while the member 17 is hollow. and the member 16 is, of course, received in the member 17. (,)n the member 16 is adjustably arranged a. collar 19 having a threaded opening therein arranged transversely of its bore. and the threads in the said opening are designed to coengage with the threaded shank of a thumb screw 20. By adjusting the collar on the member 16 to bring the same int-o Contact with the end of the inem ber 17, and b v tightening the thumb screw 20 against the member 1G the telescopic elements will be held properly adjusted and the sheet holding members` 8 8 sustained a proper distance away from each other to hold the sheet 10 taut therebetween.
In lieu of supporting the device by the cord or fieXible element 1-1 I may arrange upon one of the telescopic elements 16 or 17 al bracket Q1 having swiveled thereto a supporting leg 23, suitable means being provided for binding the leg against the bracket. The leg 23 may, if desired, cornprise a plurality of telescopic sections, suitable means being arranged between the sections for holding the same adjusted with respect to each other. The leg '23 being arranged at an angle with respect. to the de Vvice effectively supports the latter, and from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings the simplicity of the construction` and the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be apparent Yto those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertains.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a. device for the purpose set forth, two cross sectionally U-shaped members designed to receive a sheet therebetween, clips for compressing the members and holding the sheet therein, telescopic elements one removably connected with each of said members, and means for holding said elements n dj listed.
2. In :l device for the purpose set forth, two (f1-oss sectionnlly U-sliaped spring me1n- 5 bers. U-shupcd clips adapted to hold the members compressed, a socket on each of the members. u solid rod and a hollow rod received in the respective sockets and telescopic one in the other, a slee-ve on the solid rod,` and a binding element on the sleeve 1'0 adapted to engage with the solid rod to hold the sleeve against the hollow rod.
In testimony whereof I afiX my signature.
RICHARD FITZGERALD.
