En s'rAiEs PATENT orrion JOHN M. WELCH, 0F SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO EDITH CHARLOTTE WELCH, OF SABATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK.
To all whom t may concern.'
of Canada, resid- Springs, New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in of which the followa citizen ofthe Dominion ing is a specification.
rlhe obJect of the present invention is to provide a safety razor ofthe folding or l knockdown type which-will take up a minimum amount of space when not in use and 1s especially adapted for the use of traveling men and soldiers with whom a little additional space is a point well worth considering.
.My about the same space as that of a fountain pen and it will take up no more room.
Other objects of my invention `are to produce va light, cheap and perfectly balanced razor which will give a good clean, smooth With the above and other objects in view the invention consists essentially of the im proved construction particularly 'described and pointed out in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the same in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my razor as it would be carried in the pocket.
Fig. 2 is a front view with the parts assembled and ready for use.
Fig. 3 isa sectional view o f Fig. il. l
Fig. lis a. plan view of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a sectional side view of per part of Fig. 2. 0
Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are respectively details of the 'ard member, the clamping member and the blade.
. In the drawings, 1 'designates a tubular casing which forms the handle of the .razor and which may be made of 4any suitable metal but preferably of some light metal the iipsuch as aluminum. When the razor is not in use the casing 1 is closed by means of caps 2 and 3 which are -screw-tlireaded thereon. The cap 2 is provided with a slot 14 into which the head .1 hereinafter referred to is held, butl when the razor is not in use this slot is closed by the upper end of the casing 1 so as to prevent the entrance'of dirt. Midway of the casing 1 is a partition 4 whichv divides the casing into up er and lower chambers 5 and 6.v The cham r 6 is adapted to carry a supply of extra blades 7 and will hold as many as three dozen,

while the chamber 5 is used to store the head consisting of the guard member 8, the blade 9 and the clamping bar 10. The guard member 8' has the usual downwardl curved fingers 11 and has near its rear edyge holes 12 adapted when in assembled position, to receive the projections 13 on the clamping bar l0 which holds the blade .9 firmly in place against the guard 8'.
When it is desired to use the razor,'the cap 2 is unscrewed from the casing and the head taken out and the cap screwed back on the casing until thelower edge of the slot 14: in the.cap is about even with the top of the upper edge of the casing. The parts are then assembled with the blade 9 between the guard v8 and the clamping bar 10, which is held in correct position by th`e projections 13 extending through the holes 12 in the guard member. These parts are then placed in the slot 14 and held with the left hand while the right hand is used to screw the casing .1 farther into the cap until the parts are tightly` wedged between the top of the casing 'and the top edge of the slo't which is curved to lit the top of the clamping bar. In order to register the parts centrally I may groove the guard member on its under side to receive the edge of the casing 1 and thus keep the parts central and prevent slipping.'
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have produced a razor which can be very' conveniently carried in the pocket, perfectly balanced, cheap to manufacture and economical in use as the'blades which are less than one quarter of`an inch wide can be made at a minimum cost.
What I 4 claim is:
1. A razor comprising a body, a clamping cap, said body being telescopic with said cap, a slot in said cap, a shaving head in said slot and held therein byeng-agement with the body and cap, substantially as described. 2. A razor comprising a body, a clamping cap on one end, a slot in said cap, `a shaving head in said slot and held therein when in u-se by engagement with the body and cap, said body and cap being provided with cooperating threaded portions whereby the screwing of one onto the other causes the clamping of the head in the slot, substantially as described.
3. A razor comprising a body, a head, a
clamping ca on one end of the body and a transverse s ot in the said cap in which the head is clamped by engagement With the body7 and cap, substantially as described.
4. A razor comprising a body, a head, a clamping cap on one end of the body and a transverse slot in the said cap in Whichthe head is clamped by engagement With the body Iand cap, the said slot having its lower edge lying in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the body and its upper edge lying in a plane at an angle to the perpendicular plane to the axis of the body, substantially' as described.
5. In ombination With a razor head, a .l5 guard member having holes therein, a clamping bar having projections fitting insaid holes and a blade clamped therebetween in advance of the projections, substantially as described.
