To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ A. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and States of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Razors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is the production of a safety razor which shall be simple in construction, comparatively inexpensive in cost, provided with means for securely holding a detachable blade in position, and
also having means for positively adjusting the blade relative to the guard teeth.
With this end in view, my invention consists in certain novelties of construction and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims, while the preferred forms ofmy invention are illus trated in the accompanying drawings, yet it is to be understood that minor detail changes may be made without departing from the scope thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved safetyrazor, showing the blade holder in a vertical position, and a blade partly inserted in the blade holder. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 represents a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 4 represents a side elevation, partly in section. Fig. 5
represents a sectional rear elevation taken on lines mw of Fig. 4, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 6 repsents a plan view of my improved safety rametal bent upon itself so as to provide resihent clamping jaws to receive the razor blade between themselves and further to receive a pintle 3, by means of which the blade holder is pivotally connected to the spring-actuated blade holder support 4 by integral end bearings 5 formed on said spring-actuated blade holder support 4.
The blade holder support 4 by means of suitable bearings 6 formed integral thereon, 1s by means of a pintle 7 and correspondingly integral bearings 8 formed on the frame 9, hingedly connected to the frame. A splral spring 10 conveniently located on the pintle 7 is provided with oflset ends 11, one of which is designed to bear upon the blade holder support 4 and the other end of which is designed to bear upon the frame 9. The frame 9, with its integral handle 12 and guard 13, is preferably made of sheet metal stamped and formed from a single blank, or 1f desired, may be constructed as illustrated in Fig. 7 of the drawings, in which the frame 9 is provided with a removable handle 12, which if desired, for convenience in packing, may be detached from the frame.
The frame 9 is constructed to grip the blade 1 at the front corners, the sharpened edge of the blade resting upon the bent-over end of the guard 13, which is provided with the usual perforations 15, the free end of which is bent downwardly, and which is sufficiently in advance of the edge of the blade to afford the necessary protection against accidental cutting.
The forward and outer end of the guard 13 has upwardly extending stops 16 for engagement with the corners of the cutting edge of the blade 1, to prevent said cutting edge from projecting too far beyond the guard 13 to at all times maintain the cutting edge of the razor in the proper and adjusted position relative to the guard teeth. These stops 16 may, for convenience sake, be formed integral with the frame 9, or secured thereto in any convenient or desired manner, as for instance, by means of a strip 14 secured to the under side of the frame, by means of suitable pins or rivets, the outer ends of said strip being bent so as to form the stops 16.
The razor blade 1 as shown, is preferably the blade intermediate said portion and-said cutting edge comprising a uniformly concave portion on which the 'cutting edge is formed, and lyingen'tirely on one side of the central plane of -the said first mentioned portion, and having an offset portion connecting said concave portion with said first mentioned portion. The plane portion of the blade is provided with a central aperture 17 conveniently located therein, adapted to engage with the pressed-out portion 30 on one of the clamping jaws of the blade holder 2, to firmly secure and prevent the acoidental displacement of the blade 1 from said holder 2.
Although'I have shown a razor blade of peculiar construction, I wish it to be understood that any of the razor blades now in common use may be employed.
The handle 12 may be of any convenient shape to provide a good hold for the hand. Near that portion thereof where it is connected to the frame 9, I have shown the same flat to receive a chambered casing 18,
which is secured thereto by clenching the longitudinal sides thereof against the under side of the handle, as shown at 31 in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Located within said chambered casing and having sliding engagement with the casing and handle, is a' latch plate 19, the under side of the upper or free end 20 of said latch plate designed to bear upon the rear portion of the spring actuated blade holder support 4, in order that when said latch plate is manipulated by themeans to be hereinafter described, the cutting edge of the blade is brought into an adjusted operative position relative to the guard, or removed therefrom. The latch plate is provided with an elongated slot 21, one side of which is provided with internal teeth 22 designed to engage with a pinion 23 located in said slot and engaging with said teeth, said pinion being formed integral with or separate from the shank 24 of the thumb-screw 25, one end of said shank passing through a suitable aperture formed in the handle 12, the other end of said shank being riveted over a suitable washer 27.
The end of the latch plate 19 is preferably beveled and provided with a series of notches 28 designed to engage with a suitable projection 29, formed on the rear wall of the blade holder support 4, for engagement therewith, in order to provide step-like means whereby the razor blade can be locked m I'Fig. 4 of of the latch plate 19, which is preferably beveled and provided with a series of notches 28 to engage with the projection 29 formed on the rear wall of the blade holder support 4, thereby forcing the spring-actuated blade holder support 4 in an approximately vertical position, and thus forcing the cutting edge of the blade 1 into engagement with the corner stops 16 of the frame 9,. and further movement of the thumb screw 25 causes the cutting edge of the razor blade to be positively adjusted in a step-like manner relative to the guard teeth on the frame. By turning the thumb screw in the opposite direction, the springactuated blade holder support 4, due to the action of the end 11 r of the spiral spring 10, will assume the position indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thereby with drawing the cutting edge of the blade from the corner stops 16 and permitting the blade holder 2, with its attached blade 1, to be swung into the position illustrated in Fig. 2, for the removal of the blade or otherwise. v i
The present ihvention provides a very efiicient and exceedingly slmple safety razor, the same being constructed of a minimum number of parts, and reduced to the simplest operative efficiency, and in which the accidental separation of the razor blade from the frame is prevented. The parts are of such shape as to lend themselves readily to manufacture by the use of suitable 1punchesand dies from ordinary sheet meta;
I am aware that changes may be made in the several arrangements of the various parts, as well as in the details of construction thereof, without departing from the scope of my present invention; hence I do not wish to be limited to the arrangements and combinations of parts as herein shown and described, as obvious modifications will suggest themselves to .those skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. A safety razor comprising a frame having guard teeth at one edge and a handle extending from the other edge, a springactuated blade holder support hingedly connected to oneedge of said frame, a blade holder hingedly connected to said springactuated blade holder support, a blade located in said blade holder and means 'slidably secured to the frame and having sliding engagement with the blade holder for positively adjusting the blade relative to the guard teeth on the frame.

A safety razor comprising a frame having stops at one edge and a handle depending from the other edge, a spring-actuated blade holder support hingedly connected to one edge of-said frame, a blade holder provided with resilient clamping jaws to receive the blade between themselves, hingedly connected to one edge of said sprin -actu-. ated blade holder support, a blade located between the clamping jaws of said blade holder and 'means located on the handle of the frame and having sliding engagement therewith and with the spring-actuated blade holder support for positively adjusting the blade relative to the frame.
4. A safety razor comprising a frame, a
spring-actuated blade holder support one end of which is hingedly connected to one edge of said frame, a blade holder hingedly connected to theopposite edge of said spring-actuated b ade holder support, a blade located in said blade holder and means for positively adjusting the blade relative to the frame comprising a plate which has sliding engagement with the frame and the spring-actuated blade holder support.
