Be it known that I, SAMUEL FRIEDLANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stretching-Frames; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive, yet a highly efficient and durable knock-down frame for stretching buckram before applying the starch thereto, or for stretching curtains and the like.

Tith the foregoing general object in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction and unique arrangenient of parts hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated.

Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a longitudinal section of the frame.

In the drawings above briefly described, the numerals 1 designate a pair of parallel side bars having prongs 2 by which the buckram or the like is attached thereto. Several transverse bars 4 extend toward each other from the side bars 1 and are provided in their inner ends with sockets 5 in which dowel pins 6 are slidably received. Toggle links 7 are pivoted at their outer ends to brackets 8 on the lower sides of the bars 1, the inner ends of said links being pivotally connected to a central longitudinal operating bar 9. One end of bar 9 is provided with a nut l0 and a longitudinal screw 11 is threaded in said nut, said screw being swiveled at 12 in a central lobe 13 which depends from a transverse plate 14, said plate standing in a vertical plane, being horizontally elongated, and disposed in contact with one side of one pair of the bars 4. A pair of guide yokes 15 embrace the ends of the plate 14 and are secured to said bars 4, and it will thus be seen that as the screw 11 is operated and the toggle links 7 move the side bars l inwardly or outwardly, the ends of the plate 14 will slide freely within the guides 15, the dowel pins 6 also sliding in the sockets 5.

The end of the bar 9 opposite the screw 11 is provided with a longitudinal slot 16 and rests slidably upon a transverse horizontal plate 17, said plate sliding through guide stirrups 1S depending from certain of the bars 4. Plate 17 is provided with a stud 19 extending into the slot 16 and it will thus be obvious that the plate and the bar 9 will be held in proper relation while adjustment of the frame is taking place, said bar then sliding upon the plate, while the latter slides through the stirrups 18.

lVhenever it is necessary to disassemble the frame, the links 7 may be removed from the bars l, thus permitting said bars to be pulled away from each other in such a inanner as to disengage thel several sliding connections between the two sets of bars 4. y

From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be obvious that I have provided a stretching frame which will be simple and inexpensive, yet quick and easy to operate. Since probably the best results are obtained from the details and arrangement shown, they are preferably followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may well be made. For instance the showing on the drawings may constitute a complete stretcher or on stretches of unusual length the construction in question may be duplicated ait lboth ends.

I claim 1. In a stretching frame, a pair of side bars, a longitudinal operating bar between said side bars, toggle links extending from said side bars to said operating bar, a screw for shifting said operating bar longitudinally, a transversely disposed elongated plate on which said screw is mounted, guides in which the ends of said plate are slidafbly received and transverse bars extending toward each other from said side bars and carrying said guides.

3. In a stretching frame, a pair of side bars, a longitudinal operating bar between said side bars, toggle links extending from said side bars to said operating bar, means associated With said operating bar for shifttransverse bars extending toward eaeh other froln said side bars, and guides on said transverse bars in Which the ends of said plate are slidably received.
