Description
J. 0. GARY. Device for Stretching Pants.
No. 218,810. Patented Aug. 26,1879.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. CARY, OF RIOHFIELD SPRINGS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN DEVICES FOR STRETCHING PANTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,810, dated August 26, 1879; application filed J une 12, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. GARY, of Rich field Springs, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Stretching Pants; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for stretching pants; and it consists in the combination of two'rods, which are connected together by elliptical springs, and prevented from moving endwise by means of crossed strings or wires, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The accompa nying drawingrepresents a side elevation of my invention complete.
a, to represent two stra ght rods, made of any suitable material, but preferably of wood, and which are made sufficiently long to stretch the whole leg of the pants. These two rods are united together near each end by means of the double fiat or elliptical springs c, the one at the upper end of the rods being the longer, so as to make the stretcher conform to the shape of the pants-leg.
The springs are secured to the inner sides of the rods a by having their ends clamped between the two small blocks of woode, which are fastened to the rods, and held together by the ferrule 01. I
In order to prevent the rods from having an endwise movement, which would have a tendency to prevent the springs from acting properly, the rods are connected together by the two strings'g, which cross each other, as shown. The ends of these strings-are fastened to the small screw-eyes 1', which are screwed into the blocks 6, which blocks are thus made to serve a double purpose.
' Upon the outer side of one of the rods, near its lower end, is fastened a flat spring, 0, which extendsdownward to the end of the rod, and which spring can be forced outward to any desired extent by means of the set-screw a. By means of this spring the stretcher is made to fit the spring-bottoms of the pants, and thus every part of the leg can be stretched alike.
By using elliptical springs, as shown, the slightest pressure of the two rods toward each other serve to distend the springs and cause them to open away from each other, and thus bring their whole elasticity into play in a straight line, so as to force the rods straight outward from each other.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1. The combination of the two rods a, elliptical springs c, and crossed strings or wires g, substantially as shown.
2. The rods a, having the blocks 6 secured to them and held together by the ferrules d, the said blocks serving to hold the ends of the springs, and the eyes i to fasten the strings, substantially as described.
-In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
J. O. GARY. Witnesses:
W. M. MGOREDY, O. E. GOODALE.
