' HAT-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18, 1919.
Application filed March 23, 1917. Serial No. 157,036.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES R. CHENERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bufialo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
his invention relates to a hat box and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character, whereby the hat may be readily inserted and removed through the front wall of the device and also having means whereby accessories used in connection with the hat may be readily stored when not in use.
Another object of this invention is to provide a receptacle having a door way in the front wall adapted -to be closed by a hinged door providing means whereby the hat may be readily inserted and removed from the receptactle through the door way without removing the receptactle from a shelf or like place or of supporting other articles.
Another object of this invention is the provision of longitudinally extending guide blocks secured to the side and bottom walls of the receptacle adapted to slidabl receive a drawer, which blocks support a false bottom and also reinforce the bottom wallof the receptacle.
A further object of this invention is the provision of strips disposed about the door' way adapted to engage the door to form a dust-proof closure and which rests upon the false bottom preventing said false bottom from disengagingfrom the guide blocks.
A further object of this invention is to provide each ofthe walls of the receptacle construction of upper and lower sections which are hinged together for the purpose of permitting the walls to be folded inwardly upon each other to render a compact article what will occupy a considerably small space when shipped. 1
A further object of this invention is the provision of means carried by the top wall of the receptacle and adapted to be inserted within slots in the side and rear'walls for the purpose of holding the walls in assembled position.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a hat box of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efliclent, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, as Wlll become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the followmg description and accompanying drawlng, 1n which: 1
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat box constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, illustrating the door in an open position,
F 1g. 3 1s a vertical sectional view illustratlng the manner of mounting the drawer in the receptacle,
Fig. 4- 1s a, transverse sectional View illustrat ng the guides for receiving the drawer, Fig. 1s a fragmentary sectional view lllustratlng the receptacle with the drawer removed,
Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the device in a folded position,
Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on the line 77 of Fig. 6.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a substantially rectangular receptacle having the front wall 2 thereof provided with a doorway 3, which is adapted to be closed by a door 4. The door 4 has a piece of fabric 5 secured thereto which is in turn secured to the wall 2', whereby the door is hinged so that the same may 'be readily swung in an open or closed position. vA plate 6 is secured to the free end of the door and has pivoted thereto, a lever 7, which is adapted to engage a catch 8 carried by the wall 2 0f the door, whereby the door is locked in a closed position.
Relatively spaced and longitudinally extending guide members 9 are positioned upon the bottom wall of the receptacle 1 and have their ends abut the rear and front wall 2 of the receptacle. Supported upon the ide members 9 is a false bottom 10, forming a drawer space 11, in which is slidable a drawer 12. The walls of the drawer 12 are of such a height that the upper edges thereof will frictionally engage the under face of the false bottom 10 when the drawer is slid inwardly and outwardly of the receptacle,
thus providing means whereby the drawer will b held from accidentally sliding from the receptacle. when being moved from-one point to another.
Surrounding the door way 3- are dust strips 13, the side ones of wluch have their lo\\er,ends resting upon the false bottom 10, whereby the false bottom is held upon the guide members 9. The strips 13 are secured to the front wall 2. \Vhen the door 4 1s in a. closed position, the same abuts the dust strips 13,thus establishing a dust-proof door which will prevent any dust from entering the interior of the receptacle. Secured upon the inner face of the door 1- is a frame 14, adapted to support a mirror 15. The frame ll engages the dust strips 13 or the outer edges thereof when the door is swung to a closed position, further forming a dust-proof connection between the door and the receptacle.
The front, rear and side walls 2 and 3' are-each constructed of upper and lower sections. The lower sections of each of the walls terminating approximately in horizontal alinement with the false bottom 10. The upper sections are lunged to the lower sections by strips of tape 16 so that they may be folded inwardly over the false bottom when desired. The dust-proof strips 13 of the front all 2 are also hinged as illustrated at 17 for permitting the front wall 2 to fold inwardly over the. false bot.-
tom 10. A cover or top 18 is hinged to the upper edge of the upper section of the front wall 2 as shown at 19. Formed Upon the side and rear edges of the top or cover 18 are attaching tabs 20 which have enlarged heads formed thereon that are adapted to be inserted within the slots 21 formed in the side and rear walls of the receptacle for detachably securing the said walls of the top or cover 18 when desiring to fold the receptacle or box 1. The tabs 20 are removed ,from the slots 21 and the cover is folded downwardly upon its hinge 19. the front wall 2 is then folded inwardly over the false bottom 10 having the cover or top 18 disposed between the false bottom 10 and the cover or top 19. The side walls 3 are r then folded inwardly over the front wall 2 a rigid box or receptacle after the same has been shipped, adhesive tape or the like may beplacefd over the hinges or the side and rear walls and upon the outer faces thereof.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that a dust-proof receptacle has been provided wherein a hat may be readily stored and also which is provided with a drawer that may be withdrawn from the receptacle to receive accessories that are used in connection with the hat, such as hat pins. veils and the like.
\Vhile I have shown and described .the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A folding hat box comprising side, front and rear and bottom and top walls, each consisting of upper and lower sections, the lower sections of the walls being permanently secured together, means for hinging the upper sections of the walls -to the lower sections. said front wall having a door way, a. hinged door closing said door way, means for hinging the top wall to the upper edge of the front wall, said side and rear walls having slots adjacent their upper edges, and tabs formed upon the side and rear edges of the top wall adapted to be inserted in the slots to detachably secure the top wall to the rear and side walls.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES R. CHENERY.
