DAVIS WEINSTOCK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING DISPLAY-CASE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Davis VEINs'rock, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, borough of Manhattan. in the county of New York and State oitl New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Display- Cases, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a display or show case which may be folded or collapsed for convenience in handling and transportation, and may be readily opened out for ilse. The show case 1 have illustrated is provided with folding walls and bottom and a folding shelf, the top or lid being hinged to a wall to permit folding of the same, and the back of the case is hinged to permit access tothe interior.
My invention comprises the novel details of improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein- Fignre 1 is a front elevation oit' a show case embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a rear view showing the doors opened out; Fig. 3 :is a cross section showing one of the doors opened; Fig. 4t is an enlarged detail of a portion of the lower` part of the case at one corner; Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5, 5, in Fig. 1; Fig. is a section on the line t), (3, in Fig. 2, and Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7, 7, in Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The bottom of the case is indicated at 1 and the front wall 2 is pivoted to the bottom 1 as by hinge 3 so as to :fold one against the other. The bottom 1 may be of any suitable material. I have shown the same as comprising a board 1a with metal binding pieces 1b. In the example illustrated the front wall 2 and sides et are hinged together, and the sides have angularly disposed members 4; interposed between the front wall 2 and side members 1. The members 11 are hinged to the front 2 at the sides of the latter by hinges 5, and the side members t and L1L are hinged together by hinges (3. The parts 2, l and 1 are preferably made mainly of glass provided with suitable metal bindings 7 to which the several hinges are attached, whereby the interior of the ease may be seen. Means are provided for de- Specifcation of Letters Patent.

tachably holding the sides to bottom 1, and :for which purpose I have shown bottom 1 provided with upturned pins S receiving sockets or sleeves 9 at the lower corners of the sides 4. lins S may be in the form of bent wire the horizontal portions S of which are journaled in keepers 10 on bottom 1, whereby said pins may be folded downwardly against bottom 1, (see Figs. 3 and .4). Thus, when pins S are turned upwardly the sockets f) may be attached thereto by the relative movement between the sides and the bottom of the case, and said pins being at the rear corners of the bottom keep the sides in proper position. The. top, as imflicated, is made in two portions l1, 11 hinged together at 12, and said top is hinged to the upper corner of front 2 by hinges 1?), the ends of portion 11."L on top being beveled or angularly disposed at 11" to conform with the angularly disposed side portions il when the box is set up. '.lhe top 11, 11*L rests upon the side members # 1, 4 and may be held in position hy suitable latches 'l-t on sides 1; engaging hooks 15 on top 11. The back or rear doors 1G are hinged to the rear edges of side members el, as by hinoes 17. The back members may be made ot straw board bound by metal strips T. A latch 1S attached. to top 11 serves to hold the doors closed, as may any other suitable fastening on the doors. I have. shown the doors 16 as made in two parts for convenience of opening and closing the same and for ready folding when the case is collapsed.
At 19 is a shelf shown connected by hinges 2() with front wall 2, which shelf at the rear edge is provided with a cross piece or brace 21 connected by hinges 22 with shelf 19 so as to swing upwardly and support said shelf and aid in bracing the sides. For this purpose the sides et at the rear edges are provided with upwardly extending pins 23 carried by keepers 2-1 secured to the edges of sides l, and the end portions of cross pieces or braces 21 are provided with keepers or sockets 25 adapted to receive pins 23. The arrangement is such that when the sides are in position shelf 19 may be extended across the case, the cross piece 21 raised upwardly and the keepers or sockets 25 placed over pins 23, whereby the shelf will be supported and braced. and cross piece 2l may fold upon the shelf when the case is collapsed.
At the rear edge of the box 1 have also provided a brace and back piece 26 which is hinged to bottom 1, by a suitable hinge or hinges 27 so as to fold upon bottom 1. The back piece or brace 26 is adapted to be raised to fit between the sides 4e, and at the ends of the back piece or brace 26 are keepers or sockets 28 which receive pins 29 slidably carried in suitable keepers 30 at the lower rear edges of sides el, which pins are shown provided with bent portions 29a to permit their operation.
To set up the case for use the parts are opened out, the bottom resting upon a suitable support; the pins 8 are then turned upwardly, the sides folded around and the keepers 9 set upon said pins. rlhe back piece 26 may then be swung up and the pins 29 connected with the keepers 28, the shelf may then be swung over and connected to the sides by pins 23 and sockets 25; the top will be swung over and attached to the sides by the latches 14k, and the rear doors may then be closed in and fastened. The parts of the case will then be all connected firmly together, and the sides may further be at tached to bottom 1 by suitable latches 31 attached to the sides adapted to engage corresponding projections on the bottom. To collapse or fold the box the above described operations may be reversed, and by means of their various hinges the parts may be folded in a compact form.
l/Vhile I have shown various parts of the case as comprising sheets of glass or board having metal bindings, to which the various hinges, pins and sockets or keepers are attached, it will be understood that the body portions may be made in other well known manner, but by having the glass side portions and top the contents of the case may be readily seen.
By being enabled to fold the case the same may be packed for transportation and handling in such manner as to reduce the size for shipping and overcoming danger of breakage.
Changes may be made in the details of construction set forth, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having now described my invention what I claim is 1. A display case comprising a bottom, a wall hinged thereto, sides hinged to said wall, means for detachably connecting the sides to the bottom, a top hinged to said wall, means for detachably connecting the top to the sides, a brace hinged to the bottom, and means for connecting said brace to the sides.
