i HATBAND.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, MITCHELLI COHEN, a Citizen ofthe United States, residing at the city of, Chicago,l county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain'new and useful Improvementin -Hatbands of which the following is a specification, yreference being had to the. accompanying drawings, forminga partthereof. f
' This inventionrelates generallyto headwear and, more particularly,rr to a certain new and useful improvementin hat-bands,
ofthe band, showing the bow-casing and the chief object of myjpresent inventionbeing to provideas a new article ,of manufacture, a band of neat,fpleasing, andattractive appearance and at .a relativelyv low cost, which is self-adapting to hat-crowns .of variousr shapes and sizes, and which, irrespecf tive of the shapeof kthe crown, will lie flat and smooth throughout its length thereupon. yVViththe aboveand other objects in View,
,my invention resides in the provision of a hat-band having its ends spaced apartand joined `by independent also 4spaced apart elastic tapes,.whereby the band is adapted not only to iit crowns of varioussizes, but also the opposite longitudinal marginal ortions ofthe band are independently adJust- `able to adapt, the band to lie smoothly,
evenly, and tightly upon the hat-crown Virrespective ofthe particular shape or incline of the crown; in the provisionof a hat-band of the kind described having stiifening-stays at the band-ends for maintaining the yelasticniembers or tapes in proper spaced relation;
in the provisionfof a hat-band of the kind described having a bow for concealing the elastic and stayfm'einbers and adding an attractive and pleasing Vfinish to the band; land in .certain novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts,
all as ywill hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows in elevation a band embodying my invention as applied to a hat havingfa taperin crown; y, l
Fig.-2 shows t eband as applied to a hat having -a straight-side crown,
Fig-.3 is l,a vfragmcntary view of the band,
vr,partly in section, of a band-end,

tapes Vwhen the band is applied upon a tapering crown, as in Fig. 1;
'Fig'. 5 isaview similar to Figs. 3 and 4,
showing the relation of the band-ends and flexlble tapes ,when the band is. applied upon a straight-side crown, as in Fig. 2; v y
yFig. 6 .is .a fragmentary inside face view theband-ends randiiexible tapes as applied to a tapering crown;
vF ig. 7l is kan enlarged detail elevation, fragments of the flexible tapes, and a; Stay; and
F ig. V8 is a transverse sectional view through the band taken approximately on 'the line 8-7-8, Fig. 7 in the direction of the indicatingfarrows. Y f
yReferring.more particularly to the said drawings, in lwhich like reference characters refer to .like parte, throughout the several views, A-and `Bindicate hats of ordinary type, which inytheir specic constructions form no )part of my present invention and which, as `shown,may vary in theshape of their crowns fand be properly fitted with bands constructed according to, and embodying myvinvention'.
l indicates the body-portion of my new bandwhich preferably consists of a single Vpiece o f suitable material, such as ribbon having y'its side margins finished. Ateach end of the band, its side margins are folded yor turnedl over upon the body of the band to form hems 2. Y Both band-ends are also doubled or folded backwardly upon the body of theband to, f ormA h'ems4 3, which extend throughout the width of the band and which I are disposed at right angles to the trend of Y the band, The hemmed ends of the-band are suitably spaced apart, and between the spaced ends of the band are placed a pair A of elastic membersk or tapes 4 4, whose ends y are disposed upon the hems 3 and preferably within thefhems 2 and secured to the band by thread-stitches or the like, the hemS 2 and 4 is a View similar to 3, showing 3 reinforcing the band at its ends and providing sutiicient body for the proper securenient of the tape-ends. 1t will be understood in this connection that the combined length ot band 1 and tapes 4f, united as described, is somewhat less than the circumference ot the particular hat-crowns with which the band is to be employed, so that some elongationot the band will be required in placing the same in display position upon the hat-crown. Such elongation of the band, however, may be readily accomplished without distortion ot the band, due to the elasticity or' the tapes 4; and due also to the tapes Ll, the band is conveniently self-adjustable to neatly and snugly it hat-crowns ot various sizes.
1n order to maintain the band-ends stretched taut to their tull width and the elastic tapes el at the same time properly spaced apart, 1 provide stiiening-stays 5, formed of strips of relatively stiff or rigid material, such as buclrram, hair-cloth, or the like, inclosed within suitable nish-casings 6' covering the outer exposed faces of the stiffening stays. These stays are of a length substantially equal to the width of the band-ends at the hems 2, the stays being secured or fixed in place along the endhems 3 byk stitching their casings 6 to the ends of the band.
n a band constructed according` to my invention, the independent spaced elastic tapes at, secured between the ends of the body-portion 1 at the extreme outer edges of the band and forming a continuity of the side margins of the body-portion 1, will hold the band throughout snugly, smoothly, and evenly fiat against the crown irrespective or the shape or scope of the crown. 1t the crown has straight sides, as in Fig. 2, thetwo tapes 4 will be stretched equally and produce like tension on each side margin or' the body-portion 1, the pullof the tapes l being` exerted on the full width of the body-portion 1 through its end stiiiening-stays 5, which tend or serve to keep or maintain the band extended to its full width throughout its length around the crown. 1i' the crown has tapering or sloping sides, as in Fig. 1, the tapes a will be stretched unequally, the upper t-ape sutliciently to hold the upper margin ot the body-portion 1 smooth and' taut throughout the circumference of the crown and the lower tape, at a somewhat greater tension, holding the lower band-margin smooth and taut also throughout the circumference of the crown, the unequal pull of the tapes being again exerted on the body-portion 1 through the stays 5, which similarly serve to maintain the body-portion 1 fully extended throughout its width; and it may be added that the greater tension exerted on the lower margin of the bpdy-portion 1 by the lower tape a produces increased pressure on the crown at the lower margin of the body-portion 1, the band being thereby more securely held in place and prevented from climbing or slipping upwardly on or over the taperino` or sloping crown.
i s a neat, attractive band finish, 1 provide the band with a device such as the bow 7 having on its rear tace a casing-strip 8, the bow 7 with its casing 8 being loosely disposed on the band and while surrounding and concealing the ends of the body-portion l, the tapes a, and the stays 5, yet permitting free movements of the band-ends, the tapes, and the stays as required in the operative placement or application of the band upon a hat-crown.
The bands as thus constructed are supplied to the dealer separate from the hats, and are displayed for inspection and selection by the customer, and present a neat and iinished appearance throughout, both inside and outside, and as thus displayed` in their loose or separate condition, the ends of the band and the sta-ys 5 will become more or less exposed by the stretch-ing of the band or by the bow becoming displaced in handling, and by the arrangement of they stays and applying the iinish-casings to conceal the outer faces thereof, the band maintains a neat and iinished appearance, not only on thefoutside but on the inside. as well.
1 am aware that minor changes in the form, construction, arrangement, Vand combination ot the several parts of my new hatband may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle ot my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim and desire to secureV by Letters Fate-nt is: 1
l. its an article ofl manufacture, a hatband, comprising an inelastic body portion having` its ends hemmed upon themselves and spaced apart, a pair of spaced elastic members secured at their opposite ends to the hemmed spaced ends of the body portion and with their outer edges extending to the extreme'longitudinal marginal edges of the body portion, to thereby exert tens-ion on the extreme marginal edges thereof, and
' stiiiening stays secured tothe edges of the spaced ends on the inside of the body portion and extending to the marginal edges ot the body portion and overlying and concealing the hem and the ends of the elastic members, to thereby distribute the tension of said elastic members throughout the entire body portion of the band. Y
Q. As an article of manufacture, a hatband, comprising an inelastic body portion having its ends hemmed upon themselves and spaced apart, a pair of spaced elastic members secured at their opposite ends to the hemmed spaced ends of t-he body member and with their outer edges extending to the extreme longitudinal marginal edges of the body member, to thereby exert tension on the extreme marginal edges thereof, and stiffening stays provided With fnish-casings covering the outer exposed faces thereof and secured to the edges of the spaced ends of the body portion and extending to the 1narginal longitudinal edgesof the body portion and overlying and concealing the hem 10 and the ends of the elastic members.
In testimony whereof, -I have signed my name to this specification.
