INVENTOR M( ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATE oEEioE.
CHARLES CAMPBELL .AN D JOHN ANGUS CAMERON, OF METROPOLIS, ILLINOIS.
CHIMNEY-SWEEPER.
Application filed July 9, 1917.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, CHARLES CAMPBELL and JOHN ANGUs CAMERON, citizens of the United States, residing at Metropolis, in the county of Massac and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in` Chimney-Sweepers', of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus for sweeping chimneys, 'primarily esigned to be installed in the Hues at all times, and one .vhich may be easily and conveniently manipulated to facilitate the cleansing of the soot collected in the Hue, in an efficient and expeditious manner.
An object of the invention resides in the production of an apparatus of vthe above stated character which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost, and one primarily designed to permit of the soot, upon being dislodged from the walls of the Hue, to be discharged at a point below the point of installation of the apparatus with-V in the Hue, consequently, preventing the soot from effecting the operation of such apparatus.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying' drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the apparatus installed in a Hue, the Hue being partially shown in section;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the Hue shown in vertical section;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view;
Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a slightly modiHed form of soot-collecting device.
Referring more particularly to the ac companying drawings, in which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, and in order that a clear understanding of the invention may be had, the sweeping apparatus denoted generally by the character 5 is illustrated as installed within a chimney Hue A at a point Specicaton of Letters Patent.

below the stove pipe receiving opening` B thereof.
For convenience in installing this aipparatus within the chimney Hue, an opening V6 is formed in the front wall A of said Hue at a point below the pipe receiving opening B, and for obstructing the view of this opening, when the device is not in use, we employ a closure plate 7 having a Hange 8 adapted to tightly contact with the wall of the opening 6 to prevent any accidental dislodgment of the plate from said opening.
The sweeping apparatus embodies a table 9 of skeleton form, lying transversely of the Hue with the innermost extremities 10 inserted in cut-outs 11 formed in the rear wall 12 of the Hue, while the forward extremities 13 of the table extend within the opening 6 and repose upon the bottom wall thereof. During the operation of cleansing the Hue and for preventing the soot dislodged from the walls thereof from being discharged through the openings 6, use is made of an innerclosure plate 14 centrally formedwith an opening 15. Provided on the table 9 is a pair of spaced bearings 16 in which is journaled a drum 17 carrying a cable 18. This cable 18 is trained over a loosely mounted pulley 19 journaled in the spaced bearings 20 formed contiguous with a hanger 2l. To facilitate the mounting of this hanger across the open upper end 22 of the Hue, we provide on the opposite terminals of the hanger spurs 23 which penetrate, to an extent, the Hue and prevent any accidental creeping movement of the same to non-aline the pulley 19 centrally of the drum 17.
The character 24 denotes a brush head embodying a substantially rectangular frame 25 having secured to its respective top and bottom faces, through the employment of a bolt and nut connection 26, spaced inwardly converging braces 27 centrally provided with eyes 28 and 29 respectively. These eyes are alined vertically with one another, and the upper extremity 30 of the cable 1S has connection with the eye 29, while the opposite or lower extremity 31 has connection with the eye 28, consequently, as the handle 32 is rotated in one direction, will tend to move the brush head in an upward direction, and upon the rotation of the handle in the opposite direction, will impart a downward movement to the brush head. This operation is repeated until the llO removal of the soot from the inner wall of the due has been successfully accomplished. In order to support the table within the tlue and prevent the accidental removal of the same therefrom, we provide clamps 33 in the form of turn buckles, with the arms 34e thereo' contacting with the upper wall of the opening (i, while the opposite arms 35 of the clamps are engaged in openings 3G ot the outer extremities 13 ot said table.
For convenience in collecting the soot removed from the walls of the tlue during the reciprocation of the brush head 2l, we secure to the under face of the skeleton formed table 9 a pan 3T terminating in a discharge spout 38 which protrudes through one of the walls of said flue, consequently, the soot in this particular instance is not only collected but etiicicntly discharged into a suitable receptacle 39, and thereby preventing any annoyance to the operator in the handling of thc soot upon the completion of the cleansing operation of the Hue.
In Fig. G ot the drawing is shown a slight modified form of pan, is noted by the characters l0, wherein the open discharge end of the spouts ll thereof, projects laterally7 from the openings l2 provided in the line. In order that such openings l2 would not -mar the appearance, of the flue` we conpan has been filled, the operator removes the cover plate l()EL and allows the soot contained in the pan t0 to be discharged through its outlet or dischargeend.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of construction and the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while we have described the principles of operation of the invention, together with the device which we now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, we desire to have it understood Ythat the device shown is merely illustrative,
and that such changes may be made when oesired as are within the scope of the appended claim.
EL device of the class described embodying inner and outer closure plates each provided with an opening and adapted to be mounted in an opening of a tlue, a drum adapted to be mounted in the flue in alinement with the openings, a support therefor extending into said first named opening, a brush head, flexible ejer-ating members carried by the drum and connected terminally with said brush head, a pulley over which one of said menibers passes, means located between said closure plates for clamping said support in place, and operating means for said drum journalcd in the openings of the closure plates.
En testimony whereoie we a'tliX our signatures.
