Be it known that we, BARRETT C. OBLiN- GER and ALBERT H. C. BEATTY, residents of Independence, in the county of .I ackson and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Oleaners, as set forth in the anneXed-specication.

Our invention relates to cleaners for stove and furnace pipe, and the object of our invention is to thoroughly remove soot and ashes from stovepipes or furnace-pipes without taking them down.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a stovepipe and a chimney in vertical section with a cleaner embodying our invention arranged in the horizontal pipe. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section taken on a planeindicated by the line a a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of a modilied form of scraper.

Referring to Fig. 1, 1 designates a horizontal stovepipe, and 2 the vertical pipe leading down to a stove. (Not shown.) An endless chain 5 is mounted on a grooved Wheel i and a driving-wheel 3, said Wheels being at opposite ends of the pipe 1. Secured to the chain 5 is a circular sheet-metal disk 6, as shown in Fig. 1. The disk or scraper 6 is further connected to the chain 5 by three cords or wires 7, which hold the scraper perpendicular to the chain or squarely across the stovepipe l. The upper run of the chain 5 passes through a slot 13, cut in the scraper 6. The drivingwheel 3 engages the chain. Said wheel is secured on a rotatable shaft 10,1nounted in holes in the stovepipe l. Said shaft is bent to form a crank 1l, by which it may be turned. The grooved wheel 4, over which the chain 5 passes at the chimney end of the stovepipe 1, is mounted in a bracket 9, secured to a piece of strap-iron S, the ends of which are secured Within the stovepipe 1 to a ring or collar 12. A similar piece of strap-iron S, set across the aforesaid piece S, has its ends secured to the ring or collar 12. The two pieces 8 S will be termed hereinafter the basket The purpose of the basket S S is to locate the wheel 4 outside of the stovepipe, so that said wheel will not obstruct the draft through the pipe, and a further advantage of placing the wheel 4 beyond the ends of the stopepipe is that the scraper 6 may be carried clear to the end of the stovepipe, thereby pushing out all of the soot and ashes, which either fall to the bottom of the chimney or are carried up by the draft. IVe extend l'the horizontal pipe 1 past the vertical pipe 2, as shown at 141L in Fig. l, and close the pipe 1 with a plug or cap 15. The driving-wheel 3 is mounted in the extended portion 14, so that the scraper may be carried to or across the vertical pipe 2 in case it be desired to drop the accumulation through said pipe 2 instead of into the chimney.

AA wire cable may be substituted for the chain 5, and the basket 8 8 may be made of heavy Wire instead of flat metal, if preferred. A brush-scraper 16 (shown in Fig. 3) may be substituted for the scraper 6. Scraper 16 comprises a ring of wire bristles 16, secured to a 'circular plate 17, as shown.

To operate the invention, simply turn the crank 11, which causes the scraper 6 to traverse the stovepipe 1'. The scraper 6 may be moved in Veither direction, so asto carry the soot and ashes either to the chimney or to the vertical pipe`2, from which they would fall into the stove, or by disconnecting pipe 2 from the stove the soot could be caught into a receptacle.

Having now 'fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

The combination with a vertical stovepipe and ahorizontal stovepi pe connected thereto, the latter having its. outer end extending outwardly beyond the junction with the vertical pipe and provided at its outer end with a removable ca'p and being further provided atits inner end with an open frame which enters the chimney, Wheels mounted respectively in the outer extension ofthe horizontal pipe and in the said open frame,the iirst-mentioned Wheel having a crank by which it may be rotated, an endless chain connecting said Wheels and extending through the horizontal pipe, and a scraper connected to one lead of said chain, said scraper being adapted to be drawn by said chain through'the horizontal pipe into the chimney, for the purpose 'set forth, substantially as described.
