ANDRHUI E GRAHAM4 PHDTUjLITHUWASIHNGTUNABL,
FFICE IVILLIAM IIARDIVIGK, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
VERTICAL BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,766, dated March 3, 1896.
Application tiled December 4:, 1895. Serial No. 570,984. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
e it known that I, WILLIAM HARDWICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vertical Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to vertical boilers; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
My invention is particularly adapted to vertical boilers on wheels with engine attached, and in the following drawings and description it is so shown and described, as follows:
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the boiler and engine, the top of the boiler being broken away to show construction. Fig. 2 shows the top of the boiler with the smoke-stack in its raised position and the cover to the smokebox removed.
A marks the boiler; B, wheels for carrying the boiler; C, the engine-frame which is attached to the boiler; C', wheels arranged to carry the forward end of the frame; .'D, the engine; d, the steam-pipe leading to the en gine, and d the exhaust-pipe for the engine.
The flues A pass through a top plate a and open into a smoke-box A2. The smoke-box has a stack-elbow a', preferably at the front side. A removable cover a2 is provided for the smoke-box, and is normally held in place g by the turn-buttons a3. This removable cover should be large enough to expose the flues when removed. The stack E is preferably attached to the elbow a/ by a hinge at c, so that the stack can be laid down over the boiler. A crotch e is provided for supporting the stack in its lowered position. The exhaust-pipe d enters the elbow a in line with the stack.
Among the advantages peculiar to this construction may be stated: The stack being placed to one side and a removable cover provided for the smoke-box, the flues are made easily accessible for the purposes of cleaning" and repairing. By placing the stack at the front of the boiler and laying it over the boiler instead of over the engine, as is commonly done, the dropping of soot and cinders on the engine incident to the lowering of the stack is avoided. The placing of the stack at the front of the boiler, especially by means of a protruding elbow, affords a much more convenient and effective exhaust connection.
The term removable cover for the smokebox, as used in the claims, is intended to describe a cover which by its movement opens and closes the smoke-box.
Vhat I claim as new isl. The combination with a Vertical boiler having flues passing to the upper end thereof 5 of a smoke-box at the upper end of said boiler into which said i'lues enter; a stack having a normally upright position connected immediately at one side of said smoke-box; means of lowering and supporting said stack with its bottom at the connection with the smoke-box and its upper part extending over the said boiler; and a removable cover for said smokebox of such size and so placed as to expose the flues when removed.
2. The combination with a vertical boiler; of an engine attached thereto without the boiler and furnace-casing and connected therewith at one side; a stack having a normally upright position connected with the smoke-passages of said boiler at the engine side thereof and above the engine; and means of lowering and supporting said stack with its bottom at the connection with the boiler and its upper part extending over the boiler and from the engine.
3. The combination with a vertical boiler; of an engine attached thereto and connected therewith; a smoke-box at the top of said boiler; a stack-elbow connected with said smoke-boX and protruding toward the engine, the eXhaust-pipe from the engine entering said elbow; a stack having a normally up right position connected with said elbow; and means of lowering and supporting said stack with its bottom at the elbow and its upper part extending over the boiler and from the engine.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VILLIAM IIARDVICK.
