Description

May 17, 1932. A PREMRO CHIMNEY CLEANING APPARATUS Filed Aug. 11, 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet y 1932- AIPREMRO CHIMNEY CLEANING APPARATUS Fi led Aug. 11, 1950 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented May 17, 1932 ANTON PREMRO, or sun MICHAEL, PENNSYLVANIA CHIMNEY CLEANING. APPARATUS Application filed August 11, 1930. Serial No. 474,494;
This invention relates to chimney cleaning apparatus.
it is aimed to provide a novel construction whereby a brush may be reciprocated or moved vertically within a chimney in such manner as to clean the entire interior sur face thereof, in combination with means v whereby the dislodged soot or other matter may be readily removed.
A particular objectis to provide a novel means for mounting the upper portion of the apparatus on the top of a chimney.
It is further aimed to provide novel means for operating the brush in combination with a soot pan, the same being accessible through the medium of a common door.
It is further aimed to provide a novel construction of brush so that the sections thereof may be replaced when worn.
Various additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation, partly broken away and partly in section showing the invention applied to a chimney,
Figure 2 is a detail vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 8 is a detail cross sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is an elevation taken at a right angle to Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 55 of Figure 4,
Figure 6 is a plan View of the brush attached, and
Figure 7 is a cross sectional View taken on the line 7-7 of Figure 6.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 designates a brick or other conventional chimney. The same may serve one or more stoves or furnaces and is provided with openings 11, corresponding in number thereto, with which the discharge fiues of such stoves or furnaces communicate.
In carrying out the invention, a skeleton frame is provided at 12 which surmounts the chimney and w ien in place afi'ords sufficient draft therethrough without interfering with the operation of the stove or furnace. Such frame has a plurality of upright metal beams at 13, one'at each corner thereof which ex-V tend below the top of the chimney and are ofangle form in cross section so as to brace the corners. A; crown plate 14 surmounts thelegs l3 and depending therefrom are a pair ofbars 15 to which a rectangular spider 16 is fastened and which latter rests directly on top of the chimney but which is preferably unconnected to the legs 13. Below the top of the chimney, such legs 13 have clip plates 17 riveted or otherwise secured thereto which have detachable hook engagement at 18 withsecuring plates 19. When the frame 12 is applied to the chimney, the plates 19 are not in place This permits a certain flexibility of the le s to enable attachment to the chimney. Kfter such positioning of the frame, the plates 19 are interengaged with the clips 17 at 18, and slid downwardly into place, thus tightening the legs and bracing the same and the entirestructure about the top of the chimney.
Suitably mounted on the crown plate 14- are bearings 20 which journal a cross shaft 21 on which, is mounted a pulley 21 over which a cable 22, preferably of braided wire, is trained; Such cable operates through an opening 23 in the plate 14;.
Cable 22 isalso trained over a pulley 24 rigidwith an operating shaft 25 which is journaled in suitable bearings 26 anchored in any desired way in the walls of a chimney 10. In order'to prevent accidental detachment of the cable'fromthe pulley'24, pairs of retaining fingers 27 are provided on such pulley, the fingers being secured to pulley by bolts 28 passing loosely throughthe pulley and through the fingers and having expansive springs 29 exerting pressure against the fingers and maintaining themin contact, the fingers-spreading apart as the cable enters between'the same or disengagestherefrom, automatically. v A brush frame is shown at 30 which has an eyebolt 31 secured thereto to which one end of the cable 22 is fastened. A bracket 32 de! pends from the frame and an eyebolt 33 9 thereon has the other end of the cable secured to it. A brush head 34 is provided for each of the four walls of the chimney and each has an inwardly extending flange 35 overlapping the frame 30 and detachably secured thereto as by means of bolts 36. Such brush heads have bristles, preferably metallie as at 38, which are adaptedas the cable is moved vertically, to engage and clean the walls of the chimney 10.
The soot or material disengaged from. the inner walls of the chimney 10 falls into a pan 39 removably supported within the ch-imney below the pulley 24. The chimney adjacent the pan 39 and pulley 24 is provided with an access opening. 40 through which the pan 39 may be removed for emptying and through which various internal parts may be inspected and repaired. vPan 39v may con tain soap suds or any desired liquid to cause settling of the soot. A bail 41 is pivoted to the pan. 39 to enable engagement thereof when in place to assist in removing it, and a bail 42 is provided pivotally on the pan so that the same may be suspended or carried; when disengaged from the chimney.
The opening 40 is surrounded by a suitable metallic frame 43 and a door 44 is hinged thereto as at 45, a latch means being used as at 46 to normally secure it against accidental openingQ The operating shaft 25 has a squareterminal at 47 which extends through an en} larged opening 48 in the door 44. Such portion 47 is detacha-bly engageable by a. crank. 49 so that the shaft may be turned, while the door 44 remains closed, to reciprocate the brush and thereby clean the. chimney. When not in use, the crank 49 may be arranged in the pan 39. p
The bearings 20, pulley and other parts mounted on the plate 14 are protected against the entrance of water and foreign matter by a hood 50, which may bebolted or otherwise secured as at 51 to the plate 14. andhave a gasket 52 interposed.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
, I claim as my invention 1-- A frame for chimney tops, comprising angle corner leg plates adapted to eng'agethe outer corners of the chimney top and. extending above the chimney top, hook-shaped clip plates secured to the outer sides. of said angle leg plates below the chimney top, securing plates having their ends. engaging said hook-shaped clip plates, said securing plates holding said leg plates in. engagement with the corners of the chimney and bracing them, and a chimney cleaning. apparatus mounted on the upper ends of said. leg plates.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ANTON. PREMRO.
