Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,704, dated July 23, 1872. d
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OSCAR ANDREWS, of M Lanesville, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bracket Bureau and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact des ription of the con-i struction and operation of he same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this Specification, and to theletters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
This invention has relation to a new article of furniture which I term a bracket-bureau, being composed of a frame holding a number of Small drawers, and designed to rest on a wall-bracket. The novelty consists in con-v structing the bureau of a tapering form, of less depth at the top than at the base, and furnishing it with drawers of various sizes proportioned to the form of the frame. The object of this peculiar construction of the bracketbureau is to specially adapt it to the position which it is designed to occupy, so that it shall not be liable. to topple over when any shock occurs, or when its upper part becomes more heavily weighted than the base.
The accompanying drawing clearly illustrates my improvement.
As will be observed, the bracket-bureau is constructed rather high, so as toallow of anumber of drawers being used, in order that it may be convenient and useful for a variety of purposes, and attractive in appearance. The back part and the sides of the bureau are vertical, and rest on a wide horizontal base. The front edges of the side pieces A are cut in the form of offsets or steps, (1, upon each of which is laid and secured a shelf, 12, with its ends projectingbeyond the sides of the hureau, and its front edge projecting over the step on which it lies. The tops of the sides are coveredby the board or slab a, which may be ornamented by means of a carved back, D, or a swinging mirror, I), or both. The base of the bureau extends forward proportionally with the shelves 7). Upon the base, and upon each shelf rests the front board of a drawer, F, the sides of which move on slides Gr, inside the bureau. When the drawers are all in they lie one slightly back of the other, as they range upward, giving the bureau an upwardly-taperin g form, which effectually prevents it from falling forward unless actually pulled over.-
Any weight in the upper drawers tends to press the bureau toward the wall, and does not in the least impair its security, but on the contrary improves it. E designates tapering ornamental posts, located near the ends of the shelves, top, and base of the bureau. These posts may be used for hanging light articles of clothing, &c., upon. The posts, which are attached to the shelves and base, have their upper ends or points sufficiently far back to prevent any articles hung on the post above each from catching on the latter and tearing when it is being removed. The bureau may be ornamented according to taste, the tapering form being preserved as an essentialelement of the present invention.
The points of the posts H are placed under the shelves which are above them, so that a guard is formed which will prevent articles of clothing or other things from accidentally catching on said posts.
What I claim as my invention is-'- The bracket-bureau having a broad base, vertical back, and sides A, with steps a holding drawers F, gradually diminishing in size from the bottom upward, and shelves b projecting at the ends and front edges to guard the posts H, secured respectively to the shelves below, substantiallyas specified.
