EDWIN fr. MARSH, oF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
BALiNG-rnnss.
Appiicaiioii'ied February 27, isis'. serial No. 219,489,
To all whomtlmag/ concern Be it known that I, EDwiNT; MARSH, a
citizen of the United States, residingat Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New' York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ealing-Presses; n
Vand Ido declare the following to be a full,
clear, `and exact description of the invention,
such as'will enable Vothersskilled' in the art towhioh it appertainsto make and use the same. Y
My invention relates 'to improve-ments in baling presses and more particularly to those y of the type commonlyV vemployed for balingrv wasteV paper and the like. Y
@ne object ofthe invention is to provide a baling press of the character setforth which Vmay be easily knocked down' andi crated for shipment and then assembled easily for use. Y
A further object is to provide a screw for y'initially'depressing the follower after iilling of the baling. box or chamber, to provide aV hand lever jfor again depressing the follower vide a Vnovel device for holding the'follower in its Vcompletely'.'depressed positionvwhile the fbale is being tied.y y ,Y
With theforegoing general fobjects in view, the invention resides in the novel featuresv of construction and unique combina-V tions of `parts to beV hereinafter fully deiA scribed and'cla'imed, the descriptive matter being'suppleinentedV byl the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specifi'-A cation andV in which Figure'l is a perspective view with part of the front sideof the baling boxV broken awayA and in section showing the use A,ofthe screw for initially depressing the follower;
Fig. 2: is a vertical section of the device j when Vthe screu'fisv being employed; A Y
Fig. 3 is a perspective View showingtlie manner in which the followeris depressed by the hand lever, and secured in depressed position by the vertically swinging arm, this view also disclosing the manner in which the Y Y front` side of thebaling box is swung outwardly for tying the bale; Y i Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View ofthe upper end ofthe baling box, showing more particularly the manner in which the link tachably connecting-the Vsides-and ends of the balingboxg H Y c Y' Y Fig. V6 is a perspective view'showing'more Vparticularly the form of connection between the box, bottom andY the rear side of' the boXj; and Y Fig; 7 is afdetail section of the upper en of the jack. Y
In the drawings above brieiiy described, the numeral l designates a vertically disposed vrectangular baling 'box whose VfrontV "and'rear' sidesSl and S respectively, and
its ends E and 1E are irovided with trans- Specification ofLeie-s..raftfv-V -Patented Mar. i15 1919.
verse reinforcing cleats 2. By hinges 3, theV Y cleats of the end VE are connected to the i cleatsof the rear sideS, and by hinges 3', Y Y the other end E is hinged to the front side S. Hinged hasps i Vdetacliably connect the cleats ofthe'end with the front `side Sand vsimilar hasps #connect the cleats of the 'Y end Ewiththe rear side Sf The bottom B "oftliebox is detachably'connected'to'jthe i ends E and E by hingedfli-asps 5 and by after insertion of more material, and to pronieansrofhinges .G,-the rear `edge of said 'bottom is'attach'ed to the rear side S" of the 'boxliji set up :for use when received.
tying of: the bale.
The upperedge of the rea-r ,wallrSV is Y formedV with. a pair Aof 'notches v7 to receive kbox Y1,'p`eri'nits the'A boxV to be quicklyV andV :easily knocked down for cra-ting and ship-V ment, yeti., permits the device toebe easily Theli'inges 3 andfhaspsd` ValsoV permit the front side S toYV be swung outwardly as shown in'Fig. 3 for one-end of thev tyingcords V8, saidcords de- Y' pend-ing from saidnotches on the interior A of the box and then extending forwardly acrossV the bottom" B through other Vnotches VVQin'the lower edge of the front VS. TheV cords then rise on the exterior of the box and have their inner ends passed into notches 10 formed in the upper edge of thel front S. l/Vith the cords in this position, a
layer of card board or other suitable mateY rial 11 is placed upon the bottom ofthe boX'andl the waste paper or other material to be'baled is then packed into said box.
l1705 This having been done, a follower' 12 isl placed upon the material Vwhich has preyviously. been packedV as much as possible.
A Vfollower depressing screw 13V isthen inf terposed between the follower and a pivotedY iiov Y, bail 14 which extends across the open top ofV the box, said screw being operated by a hand lever or the like 15 to depress the' follower 12 so that the material in the box is suitably compressed. After thisV has been done, the screw 13 and the follower 12 are removed, and more material is placed inVV the upper end of the box. The follower is then inverted and again placed in position.
A hand lever 16 is now employed for de-V pressing the follower, one end of this lever being passed through an open link 17 while a suitable block 18 is interposed between the follower and the lever (see Fig.3)-. When the follower has been sufliciently depressed in this manner, an arm 19 which is pivoted thereto at 20 is swung upwardly beneath the bail 14: as shown in Fig. 3 and is held in upright position by a hook or the like 21. The hand lever 16 and block 18are now removed and the front S of the box 1 isswung outwardly, thus permitting tying of Vthe cords 8. It may here bey explained however that before the follower 12 is inserted for the second time, the rear ends of theseV cords E and E and their cleats 2, and the cleat of Vthe end EVY is formed of a notch 23 across which one of the ends 22 extends. The lower end of link 17 is received in the notch 23'a11d saidV end 22 passes through said link to anchor vthe latter. VThis detail is a rather important feature in a knock down baling press of the character described, since it simpliiies the' construction and eliminates the necessity of other attaching ,means for the The jack screw 13 is threaded in abase 13aV and-the upper end of said screw is provided with a squared extension13b upon which is fitted a collar 15a to which the lever 15 is pivotedat 15b. A stud 13c rises from the extension 13b and is rotatably received in an opening in the bottom ofa channel shaped head 14a which receives the bail 14 when the jack is in use, the upper end of the stud down characteristics, upon the provision of Y thev arm 19,and upon the novel attaching means of the Link 17. Since probably the )best results are obtained from the details shown and described, fsuch details are by preference employed, 'but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor Y changes maywell be made.
Iclaim: 1. A baling press comprising an upright box ope-n at its top, apivoted bail extending across said open top, a follower for reception in said box, a hand lever for depressing said follower, and an arm pivoted to the upper side of said follower and adapted toV be swung upwardlyto a vertical position with its upper endabuttingsaid bail, whereby to hold saidfollower in loweredposition while tying'the'bale. Y Y Y 2. Arbaling pressV comprising, an upright notch, one end of said bail extending across said notch and through said link, a Vhand lever receivable at one end in said link for 'n depressing said follower, andpfollower hold- Vbox open at-its top vand having transverse cleats securedon the outer side of its'wall,V one of said cleats having a notch'inits inner side, a follower, abail Vextending across the`v fopen' top of said box and having its end bentV laterally. tlnough the sides thereof, alink Vhaving its lower endV positioned in ,saidA ing means coperable with'said bail andV said follower. Y
In testimony whereof I have hereuntoset ymy hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
Witnesses: Y R. M. ABKARIAN, Y E. MARSH. Y
