IMPROVEMENT IN BALlNG-PRESSES.
Specification forming part oLLetters Patent No. 126,480, dated May 7, 1872.
Specification describing anew and Improved Press, invented by READING L. MYERS and THOMAS H. B. MYERS, of Washington, in the county of Beaufort and State of North Carolina.
Our invention consists of a combination with aprincipal follower, worked by a screw or other means, of a secondary or auxiliary follower hinged to one side of the press, to be opened for filling, and forming one side of the part of the press, into which the loose material is filled when so opened, and when closed by a windlass or other means pressing the loose material to some extent, and then constituting the part of the press against which the bale is finally compressed by the principal follower. The invention also consists of a portion ofthe side ofthe case opposite to this auxiliary follower, hinged in such manner as to lock said follower when closed, and serving to confinethe loose material while the case is being filled and the said auxiliary follower is being closed, all as hereinafter described.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of our improved press taken on the line as x of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a section on the lineyy of Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the press-case; B, the principal follower; and (l, the said auxiliary follower. This follower (l is pivoted on one side of the case at D, to swing upward to a vertical position against the bar E. It is provided with alever, F, for throwing it up, and acord, G, and drum or windlass, H, for forcing it down. The side piece I of the case, opposite the side on which said follower C is pivoted, is pivoted at J, so that the lower end swings over the top of C to lock it when closed, and hold it firmly when the follower B is acting. An arm, K, and cord L are attached to said side l to swing it over C at the proper time. Vhen the follower (l is raised 11p-to the vertical position it forms a side of the upper portion of the case. This press can be placed in or adjoining the lintroom, and thereby the labor of filling baskets and carrying the cotton to the press at a distance from the house can be saved.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with the follower B, of the hinged follower C, rope and drum G H, arranged and operating substantially as speciiied.
2. The hinged follower C, combined, as described, with the slotted and hinged side I of the upper portion of the press, for the purpose spcciiied.
