Letters Patent No. 851,783, dated .Tamm/ry 12, 1869.
IMPROVED BALING-PRESS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom t't may cqncern.
Be it known that I, J. BERKELEY, of Washington, in the county of \Vashington, and State of' Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Presses; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to `the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure-l represents a side elevation with parts broken away, and
Figure represents a horizontal section ou the line a: a: of fig, 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of this invention is to provide an im'- provcd portable press for pressing cotton, hay, and other articles.
The lling and pressing-chamber is divided into two parts, one of' which is fixed to the \vagonframe,lnear the front end, in a permanent manner. The other part, to which the material is supplied to be pressed -and which is provided with the follower, is arranged upon trunnions near the end of the wagon, and is 'manner, and provided with swinging doors E on each side.
The part B is connected to the frame at E by hinges or trunnions, and arranged to be turned on the same, so as to raise the front endout of contact with the part B for filling, for which purpose it is provided with the cord G and winding-shaft H,
I represents the follower, having wires K projecting through slots in the walls of the filling-chamber supporting the pulleys L. Y
M represents the operating sweep, .the shaft of which is provided with a winding-sleeve, N, working loosely thereon when not connected by the key O.
A cord,P, passes from the sleeve over the large wheel Q, while othercords, R, arranged to be readily attached to or disconnected from the `ends of the shaft of the wheel P, pass` around the pulleys L, and are fastened to the frame at'S.
T represents-cross-bars for securing the doors ofthe press in a closed condition, and
U represents a similar bar for holding the part B of the chamber in a closed position.
To operate my improved press, the pin O may be pulled out to disconnect the sleeve N from the shaft of .the .sweep M, and the cord P unwound therefrom, to allow the follower to be moved back in 'the chamber to the rear end, the cords R being then disconnectedr from the shaft of the wheel Q and the bar U'removeli. The part B may be turned up' intothe position for filling, which, being accomplished, and the part B returned to and secured in its original'position, and the cords R connected to the windingfshaft, and also the sleeve N secured to the shaft by the pin O, motion may be communicated to the sweep, whereby the follower will be forced up to the part B, and the substance pressed therein, when the doors E may be opened, being provided with slots V, so as not to be obstructed by .the cords R, andthe bales may be tied, the. end wall of the chamber and the face of the follower being provided with groovesfor passing the 4cords or other The pressure of the follower may then be re.
ties. laxed, and the bale discharged.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-f The combination of the fixed part B and the movable tilting part B', the latter containing the follower I, adapted to be tilted with it, and operated by the
