DEVICE FOR LOCKING REGISTER-FRAMES IN STACK-HEAD OPENINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 16, 1915. Serial No. 40,168.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT G. SGHERER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Looking Register-Frames in Stack-Head Openings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to register-frames for single or double wall hot-air stacks or conduits, and, more particularly, .to a device for locking or the opening in the stack-head or boot.
Among the objects of my invention is the provision of a register-frame with devices that will permit it tobe readily and quickly assembled with a stack-head, without alteration or change, and which at the same time is capable of being removed or disassembled without injury to the register-frame, stackhead, or the lockin device.
Another object of my present invention is the provision of a locking device of this character that is readily accessible from the exterior of the stack or stack-head. Another object of my invention is to provide a register-frame with a locking device that is so constructed that it will cooperate with stackheads already in use, without the necessity of changing the parts or using special implements for the purpose. Other objects of my invention are to provide a locking device of this character that will not be loosened by jarring or misuse, is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and is simple and effective in its operation in order that a register frame may be assembled or disassembled with a stack-head by inexperienced mechanics.
I prefer to accomplish the divers objects of my invention by the means and in the manner hereinafter fully described andas more particularly pointed out in the claims. Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, it will be observed that,

Referring to the drawings, A designates a double wall stack;head or boot that is usually mounted upon the upper end of a hotair stack or interposed in the same at a convenient point for the discharge of the heat units through a lateral opening therein. This stack-head preferably. is rectangular or box-shaped in construction, having its front wall cut away to provide a discharge opening into which the register is fitted. The details of the construction of the head need not be mentioned herein as it is of any usual or well known form; suflice it to say however that the portion of the double wall thereof, forming the lower edge of the opening is compressed to form a single wall a, as illustrated in Fig. 5, while the upper edge and side edges of said opening are formed by compressing the-double wall of the top of the stack-head as shown at b, Fig. 2, and forming lateral rims or flanges I), along their outer edges.
The register frame comprises a substantially rectangular shaped member consisting of topand bottom strips 5 and 6 that are connected at their ends by side- strips 7, and 8. These strips are preferably angular metal having a shallow longitudinal depression 9, on their inner edges in which the edge of the register face is adapted to be seated and secured. The bottom strip 6 has a portion of its upper edge slitted trans-' versely and the intermediate portions bent inwardly and downwardly to form lateral flanges 10 that are adapted to fit over and rest upon the reduced portion a of the head at the lower edge of the register opening as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
The top and side strips of the register frame have their edges flanged rearwardly which flanges are within the opening in the stack-head so that plate or bracket of substantially L-shape in cross-section, one of the members, 11, whereof is horizontally disposed and lies flat upon the compressed portion 6 of the upper portion of the stack-head wall, while the other member 12, of said plate is vertically disposed and rests against the lateral flange or rim 1) of said compressed Wall, substantially as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. One of said members, preferably the horizontal member 11, is provided with a longitudinally elongated slot 13, and a screw,
bolt or rivet 1 1, is extended through said slot and through the flattened wall of the stackhead and has a nut 15, upon its extended end, whereby said plate may be locked in divers adjusted positions upon said stackhead. The opposite or vertical member 12, of the plate is preferably provided with a centrally disposed opening 16, that is adapted to register with an opening 17,made in the depressed portion of the top plate 5, of the register frame. The opening 16 is preferably threaded and a bolt or screw 18, is inserted through opening 17 and tapped into opening 16, for the purpose of locking the register frame securely in position,
Thus it will be observed that, when the flanges '10 of the register frame have been placed over and engage the lower edge of the opening in the stack-head and the frame forced into position in the opening, the apertures 16 and 17 may be brought into. alinement with each other by sliding or adjusting the lock plate longitudinally by reason of the slotted engagement of the screw 14 with said plate, and as soon as proper alinement has been made, the screw 18 is turned into place. It Will also be observed that in order to accommodate the screw l4 and permit access thereto, I find it expedient 'to'cut a small recess 19 in the edge of the inturned flanged portion of the HPP I. member 5 of the register-frame.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of carrying out my invention it of course will be. obvious, to others skilled in the art to which it ,pertains, that various modifications thereof are possible, Without departing from the spirit of my invention. For example, the slot 13 maybe formed in the member 12 instead of member 11 of the plate or bracket, in which event the threaded opening 16 will be made in the horizontal member 11, and in operation the plate or bracket will be adjustable on the register frame. I desire it understood therefore that-all obvious changes and refinements thereof are contemplated within the scope of my appended claim.
What I claim as new is A device for adj-ustably securing a register frame to a hot-air stack-head comprising a bracket of angular section slightly elongated and provided with means for securi-n-g one flange thereof to a register frame and the other flange thereof beingprovided with an open-ended slot parallel with the edge of the dihedral angleformed by said flanges and adapted to receive the shank of a member to secure said flange to the stackhead whereby when said bracket has been secured to the register frame it may be movedlongitudina-lly while said stack-head securing means is in said slot.
