GAGE-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1, 1919.
Application filed September 16, 1918. Serial No. 254,315.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PHrLo M. GELATT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of Vgisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gage-Supports, o-f which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In mounting gages and other like measur-l ing or indicating instruments on the cowls or dashes of automobiles and in other like positions, it is desirable that the supporting means be simple and effective, but also adaptable for varying positions of use or special adjustment for each location of the instrument.
This invention relates tosupporting means fo-r instruments and to a disposition and arrangement thereof whereby the adjustment necessary to meet special local conditions for each instrument are readily effected without use of special too-ls and without the making of special sizes of supports.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings,
Figure l is a plan of a casing provided with supporting means that embodies features of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a. view inI cross section through the casing and supporting means showing Qthe same applied to an opening in adash or cowl, before final adjustment;
Fig. 3 is a view corresponding to Fig. 2 with the support arranged for holding the instrument in final position;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a view of the casing showing a slight modification of the holding means.
As herein shown, a casing l which may be of the usual spherical shape and usually has a cover flange for holding collar indicated at 2, that forms a slight shoulder on the outer end thereof, is provided with a supporting plate 3 having marginal extensions or lugs 4 therefrom, the plate of these lugs 'being integral and preferably of sheet metal so as to be bendable.
When first applied to the plate at the bottom of the casing and secured thereto as by rivets 6 lor the like, the holding lugs 4 extend substantially at right angles to the casing base as indicated in Fig. 2. When the casing is inserted in an opening in the cowl, and the shoulder formed by the collar 2 is against thefront of the dash or cowl, the legs are then bent as indicated in Fig. 3 and secured by screws 7 passing through apertures 8 in the lugs or by other suitable means.
In the alternate form of construction there are separate plates 9 secured as by rivets or in other ways directly to the base l0 of the casing with bendable lugs ll which may be manipulated and adjusted as in the preferred construction.
.It .is also apparent that the legs may be bent at right angles and applied in reverse position where the casing is set against the face o-f the dash and is not inserted therethrough. For example, if the casing has a projection on the under side or electrical connections, the legs may be bent after application to give the necessary clearance to allow the passage of this connection out between the casing and the dash.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be changed without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
What I claim is 1. The combination of the casing of a Gage and cover therefor that forms a shou der around the periphery of the casing near the outer endthereof with a supporting plate secured permanently against the base of the casing across which it extends and provided with bendable lugs extending beyond the base of the casing and adapted to be bent against a support to coperate with the shoulder in maintaining the casing in position thereon.
2. The combination of the casing of a gage and cover therefor forming a shoulder around the periphery thereof near the outer end of the casing, and a supporting member apertured to receive the casing, with a support for the casing comprising a plate adapted to be secured against the base of the instrument and provided with a bendable lng extending through the aperture of the supporting means; said: lug being adaptedA to be bent around the corner of the said supporting means, andl secured thereto near the outer.` extremity thereof;
In testimony whereof I afx my sgnztture in the presence of two Witnesses.
