Description

W. GRUNDMANN.
CONCRETE FINISHING TOOL. APPLICATION FILED DEC. I. IQIG.
Patented Feb. 25, 1919.
s'rn'rs PA T WILLIAM GRUNDMANN, OF ST. LoUIs, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO CRESCENT 'rooL MANU= FACTURING- COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
CONCRETE-FINISHING IooL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GRUND- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Concrete-Finishing Tools, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which 1 Figure 1 is a detail view of an edge smoother.
Fig. 2 is a detail view of a grooving tool.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the grooving tool in operation.
This invention relates to a new and use ful improvement in smoothing tools for use in concrete work, the object being to construct the tool in such a manner so that it will not become loaded with the concrete. have been made of pressed metal and cast metal, but so far as I am aware, the side edges of all implements of this character in use have been thin and unflanged, so that in the use of the tool, the side edges would become buried in and pick up the concrete, with the result that the tool would become loaded. This loading of the tool means the displacement of material and when the trowel 0r finishing tool is used to finish the work, additional top surfacing material has to be employed, otherwise the top surface will not be flat and even. My improvement consists in making a tool of the character described with an upwardly extending flange or flanges at its side edge Which will prevent the accumulation of concrete on the tool and thereby avoid the displacement of concrete.
Another advantage of my improved tool resides in the fact that the upwardly extending flange or flanges referred to enables the tool to be used with a straight edge or guiding templet, the flange providing a wire surface or contacting with the edge guiding the movement of the tool. In practice, it is found that a thin edge adJacent the templet or guide board will pickup Heretofore tools of this character Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 25 1919,

and displace the concrete material, although I the tool itself might not plow in or become buried in the cement.
Another advantage in providing the flange onan edge surfacing tool is that it balances the weight of the tool, renderig it more ready of manipulation by the operator, and further said flange being integral with the body of the tool *materially strengthens the same particularly where the body of the tool is formed of cast metal.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the body portion of an edging tool having the usual curved ends 2, the depending flange 3 and the standards 5 between which the handle 6 is mounted. My improvement consists in providing a tool of this character with an upwardly extending flange 7 arran ed along and above the inner or guiding e ge of the tool, or that edge which is liable to become loaded in the use of the tool.
In Figs. 2 and 3, I have shown a grooving tool in which there is the usual body portion 8 having the rounded ends 9, the depending grooving projection 10, and the upwardly extending standards 11 between which the handle 12 is secured. My 'improvement in this form consists in providing the guiding flanges 13 at each side edge to prevent loading of the tool.
Fig. 3 shows the grooving tool in opera tive position against a guide board 14, and from the above description, it is believed that further detailed explanation of its op eration in service is unnecessary.
What I claim is:
As a new article of manufacture, a concrete finishing tool comprising a cast metal body having a smooth flat undersurface, both ends of said body being curved upwardly, a longitudinally disposed creasing rib formed integral with the body and depending from the underside thereof, both ends of which creasing rib are curved upstraight outer face of the flange being and projecting upwardlv therefrom, the upadapted to bear against a straight edge per portions of Which standards are perand therefore guide the tool during its forated so as to receive a handle. 10.
movement over the material being acted In testimony whereof I hereunto aflixmy- 5 upon, SiLlCl rib also serving as a countersignature, this 28th day of November, 1916.
balance for the creasing rib, and standards Y formed integral With the ends of said body f .WILLIAM GRUNDMANN.
